The weird thing is his file card lists him as being from a suburb of Chicago. Hasbro was headquartered in Rhode Island, which is why a disproportionate number of Joes are listed as being from the Northeast. I think Fridge was just added because he was a popular player at the time. They probably started developing the project after the Bears' 1985 Superbowl win.

The 1990s were certainly the lowest point in the A Real American Hero line, although I did enjoy the commercial for the Ninja Force line with Scarlett delivering such lines as "You're the one who just rolled Snake-Eyes!" and "Tough Break!", and the non-canon Street Fighter II commercial where, apparently, Shadaloo and COBRA have merged into one entity, thus Bison (Vega in Japan) announcing "But COBRA has Street Fighters, too!".

That was the reason the line devolved into sub-teams. It was a way for Hasbro to pivot to selling toys with more popular themes ("ninjas", "Space" "Street Fighter II" etc.) while still capitalizing on the fact that retailers had established a certain amount of space for the GI Joe brand rather than having to fight for retail space with a new line.
