Seeing how some ppl here saying that the Malaysian government is wrong to stop the whole show, i think they're missing one of the important point. THE LETTER signed by both the band mgmt and also the organizer with the government. That letter since it is also signed by the organizer most likely included the risk of the immediate stop of the event if the clause was broken (don't be naive, government sure have a clause else for what sign the document). As mentioned before, the government did not approve the performance for 1975 until both the band mgmt and organizer seek for help and the current government being the more liberal one gave way by making them sign this document. So, either the organizer could have just mic killed and kicked the fella off stage immediately when he start doing stupid things, else face the consequences that comes along for their failure to keep him under control within the country's norms. Do understand, partial of us in Malaysia are liberal ppl, but we also know the need to be smart enough to know to play along the borderline when in public. Conservatives are growing in power in Malaysian politics due to the wrong reasons, and what Matt Healy had done is just a disservice to the path that the current government is trying to pave to a better Malaysia. Lol, everyone is claiming how harsh the laws are against the LGBTQ community in Malaysia. Let me tell you the reality of what is happening in real life, you can be LGBTQ in Malaysia and no one will bother you if you keep it to yourself or in your circle, as long as you do not preach it in public. There are few trans people in the condo I live in and we always have small talk in the lift, etc. I may not agree with their actions, but I still respect them as human beings as long as they respect the community as well.

Singapore wouldn't cancel the entire festival though. Seems most of the backlash comes from the cancellation, including it amplifying the response to what Matty Healy did. They should have just kicked out 1975 and banned them from Malaysia then let the rest of the festival continue, instead they've really damaged a lot of confidence that local contributors to these kinds of festivals will have in doing them in the future alongside foreign contributors and visitors more generally. Malaysia is already underrated as a tourist destination, this reaction will make it even worse.

@hw985a well I agree with you on this matter they could’ve handled the situation better with minimal damage but at the same time they mainly got cancelled because of the insensitive comments they made on stage. Personally I don’t think things would get this bad if what they did was just kissed on stage. TBH I don’t think Malaysians is that conservative in the city,mainly just the suburban area with overly religious people..😢

For the knowledge of the people of Singapore 🦁 before they wanted to do a concert in Malaysia, Malaysia already rejected the 1975 because of the bad background after that they plead to the the government to come and the government gave a letter of agreement on what can be done and what can't be done they agreed, suddenly on stage they reneged on the agreement, now muslim countries like egypt they also cancel travis scott and 1975 is also canceled in jakarta and taiwan now singers always bring diseases to spread in people's countries

We can't really label LGBT issues as being western or asian/eastern. Just speaking about homosexual relationships, large empires like China and Japan have had history of same sex relationships (in fact it is all over the world). It did not have to do with moral or anything because that is Natural since ancient times. It was in fact westernization when a lot of countries were colonized where the anti homosexual laws were then enforced in many countries to enact control on the colonized. These laws are not traditional, not natural, and it was definitely not a norm for people who do not practice the respective religion sects to be restricted in such a way. It is natural for these colonial laws that goes against human nature to be removed after we gained independence and when the doctors stopped diagnosing non-heterosexual preference to be an illness. However, many governments then again have kept these laws/statute to control the population (encourage birth rates and treating their people like livestock), or to the favor of the major conservative religious groups. As the majority of the people are getting more educated with more information and knowledge accessible through the internet, laws that infringes human rights are bound to be removed in time. We can't call this westernization. It is simply a revolution that follows the emergence of internet, development of technology and medical researches. The process doesn't happen overnight, and it will take time, and lots of time in a country which is more controlled by religious conservatives that politicize these issues to their advantage. If 2 within 100 males in a population is identified as a homosexual, and 3~5 are identified as bisexuals, we will have about 5% of the male populations who are not strictly heterosexual. If we have 15m male population in a country, that would account for up to 750,000 individuals. Lets say 5% of them has decided to leave for a country that are more LGBT friendly, the country will lose 37,500 talents to more accepting countries. More if we were to account for females and families who decided to migrate for an environment which is healthier for the heart and soul. In this era where countries compete among each other with GDP as the main factor, once the government and political parties realize how much talents in the workforce they are losing, change will definitely set its foot in; or well, they can continue to let the conservatives stay in power and try getting more FTs in to replace the local talents they've lost, and yeah countries that imports these talents would continue to stay overjoyed.

Which law tho? The syariah law? Or the outdated law passed down during the British colony period when homosexual is thought to still be curable? If the laws were true and enforceable then 40k of Malaysian males out of 17m population would need to be imprisoned assuming that around 5% of the male population is not strictly heterosexual according to social studies. The outdated law needs to be repealed just as many commonwealth countries have done, but it takes time. The issue is more on the comments Matty Healy made about the government without sufficient understanding in the ruling party that had only recently took charge.

Seems like you are new to this podcast. One of the host is a Malaysian,another one is lesbian so I think it's quite representable. They are being moderate which is majority of the viewer are. They are not really talking about the law so having a lawyer there is totally not suitable. Malaysia and Indonesia is muslim majority country ,most Asians will know that those 2 countries are more conservative than others.. oh Brunei is also very conservative.
