Great video. As an intermediate on the road to semi advanced piano player, this made me realize that with 7th chords when playing in a key.. you should adjust the 7th chord to only play the notes in the key. I.E. playing G dominant 7 in the key of C in a 2-5-1 progression instead of G Major 7

This is a great voicing of a 2-5-1 and that is what I have been working on for months. Merci beaucoup. But I would like to offer a critique for Jordan. He has wonderful lessons which often lack an explanation geared towards the beginner. Now that I have studied more I can understand him. He should have spent more time explaining inversions and their ease of playing.

Hi! Adding the 7th note of the scale/chord to the chord makes a 7th- which is a really rich and lovely sound. Your practice routine sounds great- keep working on learning 7ths chords as they will be important for the genre you are focusing on! All the best!

Could anyone tell me how you choose the chords specifically? like obviously 2-5-1 in C is D-G-C but where does the m7 dominant7 and maj7 come from?
@PianoteOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Oh fantastic question!!!! So those chords are all FROM the key of C. Remember C has all white notes, so the chords we are making have white notes, which determines what type of chord they are. Eg. the 7th chord build on D has D-F-A-C (all white notes). BECAUSE of that it is a Dm7 chord. For the G the notes are G-B-D-F (all whites notes). This is a G dominant 7 chord. (If it was Gmaj7 there would be an F# - but there's no F# in the key of C). I hope that helps!
@hihello2085 жыл бұрын
@@PianoteOfficial couldn't the G dominant 7 chord also be the G min 7? or no
@imalamboman125 жыл бұрын
@@hihello208 the G chord is the 2 chord of the scale. The 2 chord is always a dominant chord. If you go up Cmajor playing 7th chords, you will get CMaj7 - Dmin7 - Emin7 - FMaj7 - G dominant 7 - Amin7 - B half diminished 7th - and back to C major 7th!
@idamusicworld2 жыл бұрын
In the F key example, I can see you use G Bb C E as the Cm7 chord. But what if I use the root positiona , C E G Bb, will it be weird then? Do I always need to end on the white keys? Or only just make it stay in the key will be ok? I am also always confused whether to use maj or minor 7. It seems that I have to end with a white key, and then I can tell if it is a major or minor7. 🙄

I'm really confused because the 2 in the 2-5-1 is used as the root note for the first chord (D minor 7) but for the 5 chord you showed which was a G dominant 7, the 5 isn't shown as the root note. Is it a different voicing? IDK bc he didn't explain. like what am I supposed to do with this information if I don't even understand it. Sorry, but it was almost like you were reviewing information you already knew instead of trying to teach it. Thanks for the tutorial
@TheGoeke4 жыл бұрын
For the G dominant 7, the root is the G, the diagram just didn't show it as the root. around 1:30 when he plays just the root with his left hand, you can see that he's only hitting the G with his left hand when playing the G Dom7.

@@TheGoeke yes i know, which only makes things more confusing. Why use it as the root in one instance but in another, its not used as the root.

@@soood3os Thanks so much! I have a clearer concept now. The main idea is that the it should stay in key, whether it is major or minor. I always can't figure ot out. Why sometimes use a major 7 in a certain chord, but then a dominant 7 in another chord. While C key is clear enough to understand, when it comes to other key, with the black key, I am always confused. Or even D key will be different from C key.😅
@nohandlelmaoo3 жыл бұрын
I get the concept of 2-5-1 but what has always been a doubt is that 2 in the key of C maj is D. But how and why did you make a D min and why 7 or why did you make a G dom while you could've made a G min or G maj?
@calecheese9133 жыл бұрын
So I'm new to this all so may not explain correctly but with the chord progressions in major keys the numbering has the same pattern. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 = I ii iii IV V vi vii-dim regardless of what major key you are in. So Maj, min, min, Maj, Maj, min, diminished. To demonstrate in the simplest way, If you played in key of C and held the simple triad chord shape across each of the white keys on a piano it would be as following: 1 (CMaj, indicated with uppercase roman numeral I to show it is a major chord), 2 (Dmin, indicated with lower case roman numeral ii to show it is a minor chord), 3 (Emin, iii), 4 (Fmaj, IV), 5 (Gmaj, V), 6 (Amin, vi) 7 (bmin diminished because less semitones in this chord shape based on where on the keys it sits, vii-dim). So with this 2-5-1 progression it will be ii-V-i so C-G-Dmin Adding the 7th is just for flavour. Dmin7 is basically the same as Dmin but a bit saucier. Hope that helps!!

How can i loop this Chord Progression smoothlie?
@PianoteOfficial4 жыл бұрын
It can loop on its own (just repeat the 2-5-1 chords and change the melody).
@pizza6653 жыл бұрын
Or you loop to the next 2 5 1 by moving the last 1 chord to a minor in the case C to Cm which is the II chord of the 2nd next key counter clockwise in the circle of fifths. So your next 2 5 1 will be Cm7 F7 Bbmaj7 You can continue this by following the circle of fifths indefinitely if you want :)
