I remember a local metal yard bought a rival scrapyard so they could get in on the scrappage scheme. Rows of Corsas, rows of Peugeot 106's, rows of Citroen Saxo's, rows of Renault Clio's, rows of Fiat Punto's, etc etc. I must admit, it was very neat and very organised. Of course NONE of those cars were what the scrappage scheme was meant to capture, but it did. As a result, first time buyers were denied cheap entry level cars, having to spend thousands of Pounds on a car, because the £500 shitter bargain bin had been well and truly emptied. All these super mini sized cars, with new parts and fresh MOT'S being scrapped, put the likes of me out of business overnight as there were no cheap motors to fix up and sell anymore Wankers trying to hawk mk6 Escorts for £600 with no MOT because they "know what they had" but didn't understand the scrappage rules. Worst of all, motoring press supported it as well, seeing the demise of cars that should never have been scrapped. Scandalous scheme

Hooray for beaurocrats with all their Common Sense and Real World Experience making these clever decisions on behalf of us feeble halfwits, and let's hope that tomorrow's Budget brings lots of good news for small businesses, eh? 🙄

Hey it's Galahad from Amiga fair light. I was told by the factory idiot that diesel was more harmful to the people than petrol, about 5 years before the scrappage scheme rolled out. If he knew this then so did the government. What I can't understand is why the car companies went along with it other than making money from newer car sales but to then get diesel gate, if it was a conspiracy it's beyond me what was really going on, and they're doing it all over again with EVs. My 53 transit could do a round trip to London on 45 litres of diesel, my 2012 & 2017 both use 70 litres (on the same roads). How is this eco-friendly. Plus my Ecoblue transit needs 10 litres of oil for each service. It's only a 2 litre engine. Takes 8 miles of driving to warm up; so it's always on choke.

So sad 😞
@Linda-u5xАй бұрын
@ They didn’t even have a scrappage scheme years ago and we lost chariots, horse drawn carriages, steam cars the first petrol cars, it’s a real shame, I mean there would have been nearly every family in the world with about forty different cars each bankrupted by repair bills but like you say.
@anonintellect9882Ай бұрын
@@Linda-u5x not quite sure what you mean ‘like you say’? A man would mend a wagon his grandfather owned if it could be mended, Imagine a scrapyard of chariots, some roman operating the scales 😂, I think 1, people are intimidated by issues with their cars so almost want to get rid of it before they become financially impaired, its like ownership anxiety and 2 people cant resist a deal £2k for a corsa in scrap condition is quite irresistible at first. The further 9k finance you have to pay for your new car probably isn’t ideal if you were running a sh** box, plus 2k to repair your corsa compared to 500 to service your new slice of anxiolytic iron oxide makes the financial aspect a bit grey. The biggest teller of the uk economy is new car sales, the scrappage scheme was made to increase new car sales, it was detrimental to the environment. Tho I am sure many private individuals benefited taking a pile of rust saying it was a historic land rover and getting 2k off, I maintain they could have got that and more if the scrappage scheme wasn’t in place. Everything does have a shelf life but encouraging a throwaway society under the guise of ‘environmental protection’ is quite wrong and caused the price of all used cars to skyrocket, that’s a real shame.
@Linda-u5xАй бұрын
@ No I don’t think you understand, those cars that were scrapped at that time would have been scrapped anyway before now, like they have been since the 1900’s, if you look at cars built since the 1900’s until now, there was not a spike in the amount of cars disappearing five years either side of the scrappage scheme, the amount of cars built and scrapped has remained pretty constant. You’re working under the premise that people were scrapping cars for less than they were worth, they were not, also you need new cars to eventually become classics, so all those new cars bought during the scrappage scheme are now thousands more future classics, and using your logic, as there hasn’t been anymore scrappage schemes, they will all still be in people’s garages.👍

Few notables which i picked up, one of the first i collected a lovely little 3 door Civic (the curvy one in gleaming white) rust free 60k mile ran sweet as a sewing machine, and a 36k mile 3 Series BMW, just why? i dropped half a laod of new Toyotas at one small town main dealer where the mechanics were having a blue fit, one senior lady owner mint conditionToyota Starlet sitting there waiting for collection, a popular cutomer she'd bought it new from them and they'd been servicing it and looking after it all its life. The problem with the scrappage scheme was that it was mostly middle class Boomers doing it just for the sake of getting a new car on the cheap, even though there was nothing wrong with what they had. Meanwhile, I know someone who had an R reg Mondeo back then and it was in terrible condition. Unfortunately, with a 3-year-old and a newborn baby, they needed a practical estate, and the £2000 scrappage discount just wasn’t enough for them to get a new one, so they were stuck with it. They did manage to get rid in 2010. Luckily a mate had sourced them a 51 plate 325i. That served them well for the next 7 years.

Several years ago I had a Golf TDI (an excellent car). I later sold it to my son. After a couple of years, he noticed something wrong with the engine, probably big-ends. He took it to a car dealer in Bury St Edmunds to buy another car and to take advantage of their "scrappage scheme". He asked them for an assurance that the Golf would actually be scrapped, and not sold on. They confirmed the car would be scrapped. A year or so later I had a phone-call from a rather upset woman who said she had just bought said car in an Essex car auction and that the engine was making "funny noises". She had managed to get my name as a previous owner from the paperwork, and could I tell her anything about the car's history? I put her in touch with my son who confirmed to her the car had (or should have been) officially scrapped under the government scheme. Something very dodgy went on here, and the poor woman ended up paying good money for a written-off car.

Back in 2010 I'd scrapped a 2003 Ford Mondeo diesel with approx 147,000 miles that kept cutting out every 10 - 15 miles. Mechanic said the diesel injector had a bad fault (ultra expensive). Also a 1997 Saab 95 with around 157,000 miles that had a damaged engine (suspected blown turbo). As they still had valid MOT and insurance, they qualified a combined £4000 under the scrappage scheme on a new Mk6 Golf diesel for which I also negotiated a discount and paid cash balance. Just had the AA dump the Saab at the VW dealer and clonked my way over with the Mondeo. Geoff, they were both duff with faults that exceeded their worth.

I have to wonder behind the scrapping of some of those older and more interesting cars - my suspicion is that quite a few were “grandpa’s old motor” which granny kept on when he died and which ended up sitting in a garage not doing much, but that granny just could not part with. Granny then shuffles off or goes into care home and disinterested children or grandchildren just see a handy £1000 carrot towards their shiny new pile of you know what.

That was really interesting. 23 Peugeot 306 GTis? One of them was mine. Ariel, he was called. I bought him new in 1998 and he was absolutely great. Fantastic car. Toured Europe in him. He moved my stuff back from Sussex when I returned to live in Scotland. That was 2006, and things were beginning to go a bit wrong. His aircon died, pronounced uneconomical to repair. His passenger seat had always been inclinded to slide about on its runners, and that was worse. There were water leaks above the driver's seat. Wasn't the sunroof. Oh yes, and the untraceable parasitic drain that sporadically stranded me with a flat battery. I'd just moved house, bought a house right on the top of my budget, no money left to replace the car. Managed to keep him going another two and a half years, but it was getting close to the end of the road. 120,000 miles on the clock. Prices online for the same car WITHOUT the dead aircon, sliding passenger seat and leaks, were about £500. I wanted a new Golf GTi Mk6. What would you have done? Seriously? Contacted the Antiques Roadshow? So Ariel went to the scrappage scheme, to be replaced with Prospero the Golf (who lasted until a careless BMW driver totalled him in 2023). A few months later there was a local news report. Two young lads killed down Selkirk way when the driver took a bend too fast and went off the road. In a Peugeot 306 GTi. I was really really glad Ariel was baked beans cans by then, and I knew for sure he hadn't killed these boy racers.

UNBELIEVABLE GOEFF Well, at the time I thought, if they are economical write-offs fair enough. But Geoff, you have made me feel extremely sick 🤮 What was some of these people thinking?!?! INSANITY

Very interesting video, we are looking for a freelander that will be our third, loved every one. Started when I bought a boat and had to say a sad farewell to my beloved Rover 216 GTi. WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION is an appropriate epithet for the 2009 scrappage scheme.

Unbelievable! what's like not in 2024? I'd hate to think, My wife has still got 2005 Freelander TD4 and loves it, and I'm still driving my 2004 Discovery V8, we wouldn't touch anything newer that 2010. enjoy your break Geoff, cheers from Australia.

What happened was they got everyone to swap in their cars with no computers. Now everyone has a car that goes online. Soon, limits on how much a pleb really needs freedom to move around. It's going to be easier when you have no paper money in your pocket.

Unbelievable Geoff! I'm NOT going to make a cup of tea. I'm going to fix myself a stiff drink. It is a tragedy that so many practical classics were lost to the scrappage scheme. I can understand how, at the time, a rusty old Ford Fiesta might seem not worth saving, but TRIUMPH??? Go figure.
