I'll admit, when Pettersson took the stage, I saw a skinny kid who looked like he was going to hurt himself if the wind blew too hard. Man, was I ever wrong. 2017 has emerged as one of the best draft classes in a while...it's going to be a great ride watching these guys dominate the league and win their share of awards over the next decade.

Which only solidifies the fact that literally no one can predict 100% what an 18yr old highschooler is going to do in the NHL. Aside from the extremely rare generational talent. I still think there should be a rule that you have to be at least 20 to be draft eligible.

I’m a Canes fan, and I must admit, this goal by Nico is unreal. He isn’t undressing an AHL D-Man, hes is undressing Jaccob Slavin, who is considered one of the best if not the best Defensive Defenseman in the world. Don’t count him out either. He just has a really bad supporting cast. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4ucYWp8aNWcfZY

Top 5: Pettersson, Makar/Heiskanen (so close between the 2 idk who to put at 2 and who at 3), Hischier, Suzuki. Pettersson is no question the best, Makar has more offensive potential but Heiskanen has a more rounded game, both will be top 5 dmen and consistent Norris finalists, Hischier will win a selke or 2 and put up 65-75 points a season in his prime, and suzuki will be a good no. 1 centre putting up 70-80 points in his prime. Plus there’s Nolan Patrick who still has 60 point potential

To me its impossible to say who is better between Miro and Makar. They are both great. 1A and 1B to me. Makar is more offensive but Miro is offensive too. Miro is more defensive but Makar holds his own. Cant go wrong with either pick. For right now it has to go to Miro because he has been so instrumental to the Stars being where they are right now.

First thing , great channel and content! Old school perspective here, I grew up with an awesome homer channel covering Vancouver sports. Its segment had some of the greatest local greats doing a half hour show, it was called Sports Page. Cast that I can remember, Barry MacDonald, Dave Randorf, Paul Carson, Craig MacEwen, Blake Price, Dan Murphy, John Shorthouse, and of course the huge favourite Don Taylor. Sorry if I forgot anyone , been so long. Sportsnet and TSN robbed sports page of all it's talent and Vancouver television never really replaced the great sports page cast. I think channels like yours kind of helps fill the void of Vancouver's loss of Sports Page! Maybe see for yourself some old Sports Page segments , Vancouver was lucky to have these local legends covering Vancouver sports. It is missed. You do an awesome job, keep up the good work!

My favorite player out of the 2017 draft may be Nico Hischier but I love Petey. As for Patrick, he is the biggest bust of the century, besides yakupov. Another one of my favs from the 2017 draft is Morgan Geekie! He’s gonna crack the nhl this upcoming season. Also love this channel! it’s my fav channel of all time! There were some gems that went overlooked, like Pettersson, Makar, and Heiskanen. Chytil, Suzuki, and Necas have been good. But some duds too like Andersson and Patrick imo, and some less-than-stellar picks in Mittelstadt. It was definitely a weird draft looking back.

As a Canucks fan, I was devastated that they got shafted from getting the 1st overall pick again in 2017. But in hindsight, that draft worked out for them quite well. I think since Hischier's gone through some injury patches over the past few seasons, his development hasn't been on the same trajectory as maybe the 3rd to 5th picks; he still has been showing really positive signs in his development. He's an All-Star, for sure, but we will see in the next few years if he's able to get to superstar status alongside Heiskanen, Makar and Pettersson.

Even look at Gabe Vilardi... a kings fan so im very hyped about Gabe. But Gabe had to get over Spondylitis which took him damn near 3 years to heal from, but now that he's in the NHL and with the Kings he looks amazing. Dude had 7 points in his first 10 games, all the scouts had him going from 3-7ish and they all said he wasn't going to be good bc he can't skate... I think he'll be fine if he keeps playing the way he finished the year.

Every time you talk about the 2017 draft you barley mention Nico Hischier and dismiss him as an ok player, but not that good. You are mistaken, Nico is a future Selke trophy winner and 2-way SUPERSTAR. Imo he won’t be as good as Bergeron, but close. Maybe on the level of a Ryan O’Rielly or Sean Couturier.

I would argue the 2016 draft year had two first round first overall picks in both Matthews and Laine. Both players are incredible, Laine has had some issues but once he develops his game and find a proper linemate like Paul Stasny was, he's going to be incredible like Matthews is.

I'm a devs fan and was pretty disappointed with the Nico pick at the time. I'm so glad now. Not just because he's proven to be a way better pick than Patrick, but I also I think he is an extremely underrated player. Most people don't watch dev games (for good reason), but he has been developing into a premier two-way player. Also, off topic but, having watched a lot of games, I can I don't believe Hughes is a bust. He just looked under-sized and he lacked snipers to finish a lot of the chances he was dishing. His eye for the game and his skating skills are going to help him grow into a phenomenal player.

@@tomp6879 . Keep in mind we're saying these things with hindsight. As explained in the video, there was no consensus for draft positions in 2017, no one knew where anyone would be drafted. Plus, drafting is always a bit of a gamble because you don't know exactly how these players will adapt and develop. Now we can see that Pettersson should've gone 1st followed by Heiskanen or Makar, then Hischier, but at the time no one really knew. Hischier was considered good enough at the time, and he is doing well now, so him going 1st overall back then is not undeserved.

So far, Elias Pettersson, Miro Heiskanen, and Cale Makar are 3 great players that could maybe be Hall of Famers at some point. Nico Hishier and Robert Thomas are decent players with Hishier maybe catching these other 3. However, guys like Casey Mittelstadt, Cody Glass, and Lias Andersson have been very underwhelming so far and could turn into busts. Worst of all, Nolan Patrick could potentially be one of the biggest busts of all time. Now it's STILL EARLY so I'm not writing any of these guys off. But so far as of now...

Rangers made that trade for #7 for the purpose of drafting Petersson. Man...I wish he made it to them. Imagine...Stepan and Rantta for Petersson and DeAngelo. Can't really complain tho...Rangers are in good shape. Also..Chytil is an under rated player from this draft. He is still just 20yrs old and has 30 goal upside. If he can round out his game and get a little stronger..I see a 60pt 2C.

tfreeman133 no he had played 3 seasons in junior already and was an NHL caliber player he has just had awful injury luck so far-still got top 6 potential for sure if he can rebound

just poor luck. Patrick was quite old for his draft year, i dont think another year in juniors would have helped him too much. Also I think Patrick had a miss diagnosis for an injury in juniors and the Flyers wanted to get him under their medical staff. Injuries have held Nolan Patrick back, not him being rushed. He's missed three straight training camps because injuries. Poor dude has maybe had some of the worst injury luck in recent memory.

The Wings wasted their first top 10 pick in 2 1/2 decades on a guy who's probably a bottom 6 center.

Honestly I feel that Heiskanen is the best player in the draft. I mean this guy is 3 wins away from a cup, and he’s leading his team in points! I absolutely love pettersson but he hasn’t accomplished jack shit for his team except a playoff exit.

It’s a team game. Pettersson had 18 points he more than held his own. They play two of the most important positions and to compare them is apple’s to oranges. I think the are at this point equal in talent and usefulness to there teams. If Seattle could start there team and had to pick one I personally think a first line center is a no brainer and then you get your defensemen

It was not that good. Only like 10 are playing in the NHL and after 15 it was all nothings. 2nd round is all no names also. And out of the 10 playing inlys like only 3 are very big for their team

If you are a scout,& you said Makar should go in the 6th round..you should be out of scouting immediately. I can see difference of opinion,& missing on guys, but come on. And look how he was at UMass, so it's not like he was just a late bloomer. Everything about this kid has screamed future star-or solid pro, worst case-since I became aware of him, his 1st season at UMass. I would love to talk to that idiot.

Sadly it was many idiots. Many scouts didn't take Makar serious because he wasn't playing in the WHL. Little did they know
