@ProjectM Great info, wonder if the out the door price (sans shipping) is a bit lower in Puerto Rico for the top trim level Mazda 2? If so it would offset the $800 shipping with the added bonus of the Mazda front end looking much better than the Toyota effort. Only possible issue is the warranty,. Since it's badged a Mazda you wouldn't be able to get warranty work, TSB's, recalls etc taken care of by Toyota dealers...and Mazda dealers could refuse since the 2 technically isn't sold in the U.S. Of course either dealership could easily source parts and do maintenance/repairs, but it may be all out of the owners pocket even if there is some sort of defective part or quality control issue from the factory..

@flat That is true, but doesnt mean Toyota dealerships are obligated to honor the warranty on a Mazda badged car, or Mazda dealerships for a car not part of their continental U.S. lineup. Just something to consider and research if anyone wants to try buying a Mazda 2 in Puerto Rico and ship it to the mainland. It would suck to have a brand new car that would have to be shipped to Puerto Rico for warranty work..
@matty_o
@matty_o 4 жыл бұрын
jbm0866 the Mazda 2 in Puerto Rico follows federal guidelines for its sale there. So said car imported to the mainland would not remove Mazda’s obligations to perform all warranty work. This wouldn’t be an obligation of Toyota.

Hi Nathan, These days everyone is talking about the upcoming 268 hp, AWD 6 speed manual Toyota #YarisGR which is serving so successfully as Toyota's new worldwide HALO car. However what is being missed in the debate over whether or not it will reach our continent is the whole new line of genuine Toyota Yaris variants. The TOYOTA Yaris range includes an AWD Hybrid getting around 60 mpg . This Mazda 2 is an older design rendered obsolete by Toyota's own Yaris. In the end we are being shortchanged whether we want the best performance or the best fuel economy.

Toyota/Mazda should have the back seats on a rail where you can slide them back of you need to move people but no cargo in the back since the back seats are useless as it sits now unless you're only carrying a baby in a baby seat but not flr adults. Besides that, it's a cool little car.

I drove a 2017 sedan version for 3 years. Hybrid levels of freeway mileage - 48mpg at 70mph LA to SF. I traded it in for a 2020 Kia Rio. Why? MPI instead of GDI in a totally redesigned Gamma 2 1.6L engine (no intake valve deposits worries). CVT (IVT) gives me 3 more MPG and less revving noise. Equal handling, better ride (although the 2020 Yaris Sedan L uses taller tires on the base model). Finally, my road service warranty expired in only 2 years on the Yaris (it's 5 years on competitors like the Versa, and on the Rio; even Honda gives a full 3 years IIRC). And, being a Mazda at heart - not an indestructible "French-imported" Yaris with the ancient 4 speed auto - it's not so bullet proof, so I prefer the 5 years 60,000 miles bumper to bumper on the Kia lineup (it's not the 100k powertrain that gets me, it's the extended bumper-to-bumper).

I was gonna go with the Rio hatch but they didn't have manual version. But the Kia Soul just grew on me big time and the dealer lot had the 2020 Soul with the 6 speed manual, so I went in and signed the papers. First Kia I ever owned and glad. Averages 36 mpg when I calculate it after the fuel pump visit

I've taken the Rio with the Gamma 2 MPI roundtrip LA/SF and the mileage is remarkably similar to the Yaris iA. So they are both very frugal; I need to do a few more long distance trips to see how consistent the Rio is. Around town, I seem to be getting a few miles more MPG but nothing startling. What I've gained with the Rio is more usable acceleration - the Yaris iA sounded like an angry vacuum cleaner when the throttle was opened up, the Rio has a more traditional engine sound. More importantly, a "little" extra gas produces the acceleration I want for freeway onramps while the iA required more throttle. I really can't declare a winner - and the Yaris now has a hatch version (which drops the "iA" name since they no longer import the other Yaris version actually made by Toyota) - although my preference is for a clear solution to intake valve deposits and hence I'm leaning to the Rio due to the shift back to MPI vs. the former GDI.

The only things lacking here are a manual transmission, more (but just a touch more) power and me, because as one of the MANY members of our proud Lardass American community (intentional plumber's crack included) a Hyundai Venue might be a bitter fit; though I'm still thinking the Palisade would be more forgiving to my vast mid-section and b'donk b'donk acreage. WOOOOW what a disappointing news from Toyota. What it is going on at Toyota HQ??? First re-badge a Subaru with their Toyota 86, that has numerous engine problems at the level that dealers has a list of appointments for engine replacements. Then a re-badge BMW with their new Toyota Supra, and now a Mazda re-badge with their icon economy box Toyota Yaris... Seriously Toyota???? So what is next? Toyota create a awesome reliability reputation that has been top on the list for over 30 years with a very good history of well made and last longer vehicles and now they decide to throw that away having a fleet of re-badge vehicles that comes from well know unreliable vehicles that will never last as long as a Toyota does. I know Toyota cars has a tendency of plain boring not real fun cars that does the job right and very well, great trusty vehicle but, exchanging that for more aesthetics appealing interior or trying to appeal a market of people that it is on the far low end of the spectrum teaming up with brands like Mazda (knows for great handling performance cars that will fall apart the interior in lest than 6 years, where the usual fail parts are the one share with Ford with numerous electrical issues and failing switches, or with BMW well know that after 5 years the engine will pour oil from every gasket and every plastic piece will crumble in pieces if you touch it, beside every issue that they have for the entire history of reliability that comes with BMW, and with Subaru, knows as boxter engine that has a lack of power (unless turbo engine) that has a history of constant failure and wont past the 100K with out a mayor overhaul including head gasket and water pump. Come on Toyota you are know to have cars that needs nothing beside oil change for almost 200K miles, that is why your resell value in the use market it is so high. But I think you are making a big mistake partnering with other brands. You will see in the next 5 to 10 years. That is why Hyundai/Kia it is grabbing more and more the market share, because they are reliable, fun cars with long lasting engines and transmission something that Toyota it is famous for over 30 years but it is letting that go with this partnerships.

@Brent Moller...Porsche 911's used to sell for about the same as the current Honda Accord or Toyota Camry..time marches on, new cars are expensive these days. Having said that, not many people will pay msrp for the Yaris...I'd guess around $18k for the top spec, not bad for what you get.

For 20k ish dollars after rebates and a good deal you could just get a Chevrolet Cruze Diesel with more power, more class, more room, more fuel efficiency, and way better drivability. Plus I mean it's a little diesel car which is sweet and it'll probably outrun even a Toyota.

I am with you my 2015 Mirage hatch and 2017 Mirage G4 (3 more inches in G4) had a ton of rear seat room for such a small car even with the front seats all the way back I could sit in the back seat with out my knees hitting and I am 5’11”. Great little cars and will take the Mirage any day as you get a longer warranty, more features, and pay thousands and thousands less comparably equipped than this car and Mitsubishi always gives thousands in discounts. I now drive a new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL with Touring Package and S-AWC and will always stay with Mitsubishi!!!

Love this little logical (with the hatch) and fun commuter plus a great/fun review to match! Absolutely need the manual option (Mazda 2 front end) and agree the 2.0 would be a sweet in this light-weight (cough) Toyota. At least the manual, please!!! I know they make the 6 speed manual with the Sedan version, so that would my ultimate choice, but the hatch for a car this size really make the most sense to optimize space.

I think Nathan is shitposting lol. First the Civic SI and then this? Though to be fair, *if you were forced to base this off of MSRPs and not real prices,* this wouldn't be a terrible argument. But based on actual prices, not even close. You can find Kia Forte GTs/Hyundai Elantra Sports for under $20k, and sometimes things like 4-cylinder Camaros. There are several of them on AutoTrader for under $20k right now, go look. You're spoiled for choices that are more fun than this at

Once again, Americans get a CVT while Canadians are treated to the 6 speed manual in the Yaris for 2020. Thank you, Quebec, where sub-compacts and manual transmissions are actually quite popular. (Actually, maybe it's a 5 speed ... the model number says 6MT, but the description says 5-speed manual. **shrug**)

What is it with Toyota these days anyway? Are they going out of the car manufacturing business? I mean, first, it was the Toyota 86, really a Subaru. Then it's the Toyota Supra, really a BMW. Now it's a Toyota Yaris, really a Mazda. How this is going to help Toyota in the long run is beyond me. Maybe it's saving them a lot in development costs? I just hope it doesn't come back to bite them down the road.

Nice color. Nice interior. Way way too small, even for a small hatchback. The backseat looks useless. Looks to be about the same size car as a Mitsubishi Mirage, but I'm sure for a heck of a lot more money. For anyone that doesn't really, "leatherette" upholstery means it's vinyl.
