In defense of Parker, and I am a great KT/ Wolfpack fan, I submit that Katelyn won't be on another lever until she breaks the "15 minute barrier" as she described it in an interview today when asked about her goals. For now, she and Parker ar on the same level, along with others, any capable of beating the field, depending on pace, conditions and pack dynamics. When KT can take command of an NCAA champ race from the gun and win going away, she will be on another level; a generational runner like Mary Decker Slaney or Jenny Barringer Simpson.
@PappyNet012 жыл бұрын
I didn't follow the season, but damn that was a sprint! Ms. Parker ran like a wild stallion - I mean a Wild Boss Mare - they run because they love to run! Parker dominated that race because she ran with grit and passion. Parker put the pedal to the metal the whole race! I bet during the race Ms. Katelyn Tuohy thought for a instance that she could lose the race.

Great commentary. I'm no genius, and I even predicted this is what would happen. I said KT and Kelsey would shadow Parker and then go full gas on the last hill. What I couldn't even imagine was that Katelyn would allow Parker that seemingly decisive lead, and then reel her in. It was a masterpiece of tactical execution, but also a stupendous demonstration of overwhelming strength. I think Kate and Parker are going to push each other the whole indoor and outdoor season, and anything is possible, including one or both surpassing Jenny Simpson's long-standing 1500 and 5000 collegiate marks. Let's just hope they both stay healthy. Thanks to both for such an exciting race.

I'm a boxer not a runner and I had found Katelyn by accident a few years ago looking for someone else and have followed her ever since. Valby is new to me but I'll be following her too, both are top notch athletes. This race was a little different, to me anyway, in that in other races I've seen Katelyn she likes to run from the front right from the start. Even though she always had a decent kick, she really seems to have improved in that area as she was probably keeping Parker in her sights at a distance she felt comfortable in catching her, a risky strategy with a top runner like Parker. But she did it, she now has another strategy in her toolbox, and Parker is bound to improve too, I'm looking forward to seeing these two again!

I actually (and probably lamely for a lot of people) was shaking some because I was so nervous for Katelyn Tuohy when she was behind that much. I knew what Tuohy can do but Valby (even with her hill running weakness) still looked it good form. WHAT I SAW KATELYN TUOHY DO IN THIS RACE IS BEYOND WORDS!!!!!! She reminded me of the wolves up in the tundra wearing out the elk.........Tuohy is the best what else can I say. I pray she stays healthy, safe and humble as she is. If Valby works on hills then they'll pretty much battle each other the rest of their years, and it will be fun to watch.

Both will have other opportunities to do it again, including next year, so Valby has no reason to hang her head. Hopefully, they will both stay healthy, because they will end up bringing out the best in each other. Agree that both performances were really strong, but running the course badly did make a difference. You can run an extra 100 m or more over the length of a 6k course if you run on the outside of the curves. Parker didn't run the curves quite that poorly, but still probably ran an extra 50 m or more (vs a perfect line), and she had the full width of the course to choose from for almost the entire race! Parker admitted after the race that she doesn't know how to run tangents, and just followed the cart. Katelyn also ran imperfectly, but was shoulder to shoulder with others for half the race, so she had an excuse. What was the distance between 1st and 2nd place? Less than 50m (because the gap was ~3s).

I am not sure of each the team's training facilities, but a young woman from the Flat Hills of Florida leading the race nearly from start to finish that IMPRESSIVE! North Carolina has better natural grounds to train and cooler temperatures to match Stillwater, Oklahoma! I watched the trophy presentation and the phrase by Ms. Katelyn Tuohy "the Hills Pays the Bills" is pretty cool! Congratulations to all the runners! I just wish the sports media would air more races - I honestly enjoyed that race more than any football game over the last several years!

Listening to Parker Valby's post race interview caused me to go back and watch the race again with fresh eyes. She was asked about "running the vertices" and commented that she never does, and "just follows the golf cart". If you watch as Touhey closes, you see her running in this manner allows Touhey to close even faster than running speed, because she is running several extra meters minimum every time there's a turn. You don't see any of this wasted energy from Touhey, she's running the shortest path even when in the pack. It's a stark difference honestly.

TRP. Well done for another great video presentation. An excellent race that contrasted two running strategies. ie A front runner vs a strategic runner. I personally have been both so knew from experience WHEN to pick either strategy. If I thought I was far better than everyone else in the field, I would often go to the front and blast away. "Catch me if you can" type. BUT... if there were other runners of approx the same ability, the race would be far more strategic. Once again, Parker miscalculated. Naturally, the terrain/course/weather might also dictate which strategy to use as different runners perform better on certain types of course. Oh, times do not mean anything in a Cross country race. It is simply race position. As a former track runner, that course wasn't a traditional c/c course. We seldom see those any more: jumping 6ft fences, wading knee/waist deep streams and climbing hills fit only for mountain running. LOL. I loathed those types of gut-busters. It was great to see two fantasticly talented runners competing head-to-head. But Parker will need to change her strategy as she moves up to Senior/Open grade. It's relatively easy to "sit" on a front runner, if you guess in advance what they will do, then out-kick them at the finish. Cheers.
