The 400 Seat Passenger Plane With No Customers: The Il-96-400M

Russian aircraft builder Ilyushin is readying a brand new plane for certification. The Il-96-400M is a widebody quadjet with space for up to 400 passengers. Despite delays to the program, the jet is expected to take its first flight next year. The only problem is, nobody wants it.

Unless they're giving them away i can't see the point, after all most airlines are retiring their Airbus A340-600s for economy reasons and even these are more efficient than the Ilyushin.

Take into account that Russian aircraft industry was paralized for at least 20 years and its quit hard to restart the whole industry. I personally very happy and surprised that Ilyushin is pushing this project forward

The soviet/russian technology is great, but often left behind which is quite sad. The soviets/Russians in general had/have amazing engineers, but introducing a quad jet in the 2000s makes me questioning

Well, it depends. My hunch is, that they kept this project alive, in case the Russian-West relation sour further. Imagine another round of sanctions from the West banning selling airplanes, aviation parts. etc. Its' not unimaginable. If that happens Russia has a fairly nice plane for the long haul. Not as nice as the best in the West, but still it will do.

I had read in an article that while the CRAIC CR-929 could be a competitor to the Boeing 787, the Ilyushin IL-900M could be also a competitor to the Boeing 777X, but with the first equipped only with two engines
