Criminally underrated film. The cast is amazing, John Williams' score is gorgeous, Larry Kasdan perfectly blends the melancholy with the quirky and hilarious.

@@Grunge494 Nominated for best picture as well. Geena should have had best actress nomination since she had way more screen time than Kathleen. Body Heat to Grand Canyon was a great run for Kasdan.

I agree- I'm not clever enough to write or I guess, answer, WHY- but, yes, WHY isn't this film screened more often and regarded as the classic it is? I am a wannabe traveler and I suppose, not courageous enough to let "the real me" out- Geena' character- I guess the media brainwashing about being tall and pretty- vintage is where my heart lies and part of me lives in Paris-! But unlike her, like William's character- I don't appreciate that last pickle- I am mad at myself for not having watched this film nor reread the novel in years- it took his passing, to wake me up- too long far too long he has been associated with TV, darker, slightly vile characters- this role and his kooky hippie stooge- Kevin Kline ( 10 fingers up for friendship) is in both films- I Love You to Death and The Big Chill, Lawrence Kasdan has "magic" in his choice of script and cast- I won't forget "Bill" meaning, he will always be alive, if that's not dumb or disrespectful- classics remain - I will lovingly think of him, trying to shoot Kevin Kline in I Love You to Death - with joy. And as a " gal in rehab" I take my vintage hat off to him for staying clean, for endurance- he must have suffered- but even cancer couldn't beat his vow of sobriety- that's courage. Rest in Peace. What is you favorite William Hurt role- I'm not much of a TV fan so I beat I missed a couple of great performances Namaste from Canada

This critical acclaimed movie is one of that's year best motion pictures. These movie are now pretty much shelved and seldom seen on TV anymore. With the demise of DVD, its visually hard to see or find them anymore.

@@MSYNGWIE12 To increase readability, a dot to end a sentences is quite useful. Comma's help within sentences to break them down in pieces. The occasional line break, or, if you feel it's not too reckless, even a paragraph break can do wonders as well :p.

A favorite movie for many reasons, but mainly because it introduced me to Anne Tyler's novels. The Accidental Tourist is a wonderful read, and I would also highly recommend Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. Tyler has a true talent.

I was married to a special education teacher for a few years and it made me notice people in movies that you might think were "on the spectrum" or as they used to diagnose, things like Asperger Syndrome. I think William Hurt in this movie might well be one of those cases. Awkwardness, lack of ability to read social cues - and in the book he was all about organization. He wanted things in a set way. Something very common with those on the spectrum.

. . . I watched this movie for the first time last evening and I thought that his whole family was probably "on the spectrum". Having said that, I thought it was well done, and offered insight into the hard wired mind of a person on the spectrum.

His whole family defiinitely has traits on the spectrum but I don't know if they'd fully qualify as an Aspie. The story doesn't grant this relevance and simply focuses on the pitfall of a risk-free life, living with a "false sense of security" (literal quote).

It did have some moments that were kind of slow and boring, but somehow I was sucked in a little bit. Sad story line about his son, and his wife splitting up with him, but then again..., these sad things really do happen in life sometimes. Just seemed relatable more than anything.
