I quit all alcohol several years ago now and it was the single best decision I’ve ever made in my life not just for my health and recovery but also for my social life and quality of my relationships. 💪🏽

I was never a heavy drinker, but due to training for an upcoming half marathon I decided to stop drinking alcohol altogether. I have to say I was surprised at how much healthier I feel and my runs are stronger. I also sleep much better!

Happened to me exactly the same. Never drunk too much but quit altogether due to training

If you’re truly serious about that marathon time you should be looking at giving up all alcohol 2-3 months ahead of the race. If it's a half marathon then 2-3 weeks. If it's a 10k or 5k and the P.B. is important to you and you're on the limit of getting it you should consider a week of no alcohol before it. You can socialise without alcohol. The alcohol will be there when the race is finished and you've the smile on your face. Give yourself the best opportunity to achieve the perfect race and ideal training that's needed. “I love a beer after a run” is not a saying I've come across with all the people I've run with. I know people who'll plan a few beers the night of a marathon or half marathon they've spent 4-5 training for and that's understandable. A recovery drink or carbonated water with electrolytes is more along the lines of what should be considered after a casual run.

Nothing has a more obvious effect on my sleep than drinking. Especially if it's more than 2 beverages. Completely different times of deep sleep from the Apple Watch, 45 mins with or 2+ hours without.

Listen to your body. I was training for an Ironman, and alcohol was incompatible with triathlon training. It was like putting bad gasoline in the gas tank. The problem is even more profound when you age. Giving up alcohol is not a big deal if your recognize the positive results you will gain.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on low and zero alcohol beer on training. After Brighton Marathon, we were given Erdinger Alkoholfrei. I don't know if there is any science behind it, but boy did it feel right.
@Trailrunner1978 Жыл бұрын
Zero alcohol beer is no problem, except for calories, which arent high. It may be better for rehydration after long runs. I know zero alcohol beer have been used by marathon runner for rehydration.

Idk how many group runs have beers at craft beer bars afterwards! In the US, almost every group!

In general, and for myself, as little as possible alcohol is the best. But I am suprised by the difference in consumption by top runners or athletes. Kipchoge doesnt drink. LeBron James drinks wine daily.

If you have that big night out drinking, how long does it take for your body to recover from or flush out the alcohol?

I can't be a drinker AND a runner anymore. It has to be one or the other so I've chosen running. I'm 56 and even 3 beers these days makes me feel lethargic and low for days. I just can't process alcohol well anymore so best not to have it at all.

I drink a dark beer 7% alcohol after running in the summer heat, simply because it's the best beer around these places. The feeling of hydration is so strong that I will probably drink 3 or 4 of those after a long or a hard run. Just take some EAA and some glutamine to help the recovery process and you're good to go. I ran 45 km in the last 3 days and I'm feeling great. 50+ y/o, recreational runner, no more than 200k / month.

If you wear any kind of tracker, you'll realise how bad alcohol is for recovery. Any more than 3 drinks these days and I can say goodbye to any training the next day.

Haha! As the owner of a distillery I have to say, ‘all things in moderation, including moderation!’ I love an occasional dry martini or G&T and it has never affected my training. 🍸😊

I will never understand why getting a buzz or getting drunk is such a highly valued thing for people in "socializing". I know it lowers inhibitions and people express their true feelings more but that is not always constructive....nor necessary from someone who can socialize sober with a clear mind. It seems pretty fake, sluggish and the opposite of the exhilaration of a hard workout or PR/PB.

“Alcohol is a poison.”
@skaldlouiscyphre24536 ай бұрын
So is oxygen.
@danielwnorowski25536 ай бұрын
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 I was highlighting the main point of the presentation. I think you must understand that oxygen levels below 21%, normal inspired air at sea level (FI 02), or below 0.3 bar (30 kPa), is entirely safe and nonpoisonous. Your point is well taken, that higher levels of O2 are toxic. However, with regard to alcohol, there is no scientifically positive and safe level. Even small doses of alcohol have toxic health effects. There is no safe dose of alcohol, it is a poison at any dose. They are not the same.
