I read this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt and it completely changed my outlook on life "You wouldn't worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do." It has allowed me to feel comfortable with going out without make-up or not worrying when my shoes don't match my outfit, because in reality, no one is really paying attention to me, they're focusing on themselves and worrying about what others are thinking of them.

Being “an ancestor” is literally meaningless. They are just deadpeople. Being dead does not grant them virtues and magical powers. If someone’s ancestors were ugly, then it makes sense they don’t want to look like them. Someone’s ancestors are George Bush and Trump and Mitch McConnell. I guess they should be proud and want to look like them too🤡

Another side to this is the financial side. I have four kids in their 20s including two daughters. So many young people cannot afford to buy a car, a house, rent, or pay back their college loans...but they spend literally thousands of dollars on high end beauty products, botox, fillers, nose jobs, lip flips, veneers, chemical peels, BBLs, boob jobs, etc. My daughters have friends who are in huge debt because of these things. And this is all driven by social media, celebrities, and the multi-billion-dollar beauty industry. So glad I was in my 20s and 30s in the 1980s and 90s....

I've also got used to seeing people overdo it with fillers that I stopped saying,'' oh she's overdone her face." the more I see nudity the more I don't see it as nudity. the more I see abnormality to the face and body the more I see it as normal. the more you see it, the more it becomes the new normal

And that answers the question in my comment as to how people afford these procedures. I really, really wanted breast implants when I was younger, but I passed for 2 reasons. 1) I was afraid they might interfere with mammograms and 2) I didn't want to borrow money for that purpose. Borrowing for a mortgage or to buy a car that's necessary to get to work is different.

@@SamBaker-z9h Well, they’re right, take an economics course and you’ll find out the harsh reality. The older generations are undeniably responsible for the current state of our economy and are the direct cause of many of the financial issues plaguing Millenials & Gen Z. I can assure you that most young people are not in debt from getting filler/botox or investing in high end skin care/beauty treatments though. We’re in debt bc we cannot afford modern day necessities, or because we went to college, or because wages aren’t keeping up with inflation. Rent is higher than ever, healthcare costs are astronomical, & any people have to choose between keeping the lights on or getting groceries for the week. People should absolutely be able to treat themselves without getting into debt, but for most people this isn’t possible because of the state of the economy. It’s the same old “avocado toast” argument all over again. It’s unbelievable that people are still okay with making others who are struggling financially feel bad for treating themselves every now and then. When debt is an issue sweeping over most of this country, that’s a sign that the problem isn’t stemming from how individuals are using their money- it’s evidence that the systems in place are NOT working. Who do you think created those systems? Not the younger gens, that’s for sure.

I literally had my Amex card in my hand asking her to please book the surgery. But no she wouldn’t book it. She said that my nose was perfect for my face but I was showing her photos of the noses that celebrities’ had and she would not book me in. To this day I can’t thank her enough for saying no. I see this kind of video and I’m so grateful for that. The integrity this surgeon had!!! It wasn't just uses by celebrities 20 yrs ago..that is more Marilyn Monroe's time. It just wasn't accepted or apooen about. But people were ABSOLUTELY getting plastic surgery done! Far and wide. I think that the lack of social media back then also impacts it dramatically (how much we knew it was being done). But plastic surgery has been around for many decades now. At this point, people treat it like taking a trip to the mall in the early 00s to buy a bunch of Abercrombie and Fitch. It's the hot thing to do, to the point young girls think they need to do skincare. It's sad that people don't realise how it affects the children, and not only that but how it actually ages them and they don't actually treat their real problems, which are internal. Now you CAN have issues that are more necessary to treat, but today it's ALL about looks and people are slowly morphig into one, "uncanny valley" image! I see so many people much younger than me (I am 35) that literally look older because of the work they've had done. It's sad to see. Aging is beautiful and it's a privledge!

Indian too and thankful I grew up in a time when no one in magazines looked like me so I had no comparison. My literal brain was like, I’m not some Swedish supermodel who is 6’. That is not what I will look like. It allowed me to focus on value that wasn’t fleeting of changing, education, athleticism, work ethic. How I look is not all I have to offer because trust me, at a certain age, it’s cheaper and faster to simply let your face do what it does. It’s harder now but one thing I can tell you is that beauty standards change and trying to change yourself to meet them is a recipe for constant dissatisfaction. Curly hair is in or out, short then long, we like hourglass, heroine chic, rectangles, ridiculous. We need to focus on what we like about ourselves. Play those features up and recognize that the thing we dislike is often never noticed by the people we meet. When people say someone is beautiful, often they are responding to the personality of that person (studies show that beautiful people with ugly attitudes are downgraded and less attractive people are upgraded). You will not be beautiful to everyone either but people will still be attracted to a genuine smile and kind person.

Not that it bothered me, it just crossed my mind now and then, until I realized it was filters and plastic surgery/ filler etc. I'm 31 and never really used filters, just fun ones occasionally and I'd honestly not know what to change on my face. Yeah, my nose is crooked and asymmetric, due to an accident, but that's okay. I once downloaded facetune and just sat there, not knowing what to change lol I'm pretty sure that these trends won't go anywhere, unfortunately. I remember when I first started to struggle with my complexion as a teen over 10 years ago. When I found your channel, my young heart immediately felt so safe. I remember thinking, "She has acne too, and she's so gorgeous!" Being able to see another through the external lens was so helpful, and your inner beauty shone through also. It began to shift in me really quickly and I will always be grateful for that! 🥰 You are one of the e-founders of my confidence! 😂❤ I hope that you have a good year, you deserve it. You have helped so many women to feel beautiful in their skin and to take better care of themselves. There is so much social media push about being your 'genuine self' while few influencers are. It's sad to see people get complimented mainly on features that they don't have. At the end of the day, they're fake features, and the impact that has on the brain psychologically over time is very negative. As you are forced to lay in bed at night and know that. It is remniscent of never being good enough or matched up to someone as a child, but the feeling will now never leave; but this time the comparison is just a shell of who you once were instead. One botched surgery and too damn bad. You can never get that version of yourself back. All of the young people that are being lied to is heartwrenching. 💔 The world needs more genuine souls like you that aren't afraid to call out these dangerously contagious trends. People need to know that they are valuable as they are, and no surgery will truly fill any inner holes or lack of confidence. They're simply another emotional band-aid for body dysphoria or image issues; just far more expensive and damaging to the psyche long term. Thank you so much for talking about this. May it pave the wave for more creators, so that this commercial beauty trap can be stopped for the next generations. 💝🌠

As an artist this topic always makes me think about how important can be the tiniest detail in your face that makes you look yourself. The neverending search of “that something” missing to get a portrait right. It’s sad that everyone is getting the same copy/paste facial features, as you explained trends and looks change and can be classified by years, I guess from now on will be the same for faces (the problem is we are not as good as Mr Potato changing our pieces ;) )

Same here, as an artist I want to see uniqueness and character. The essence of the person starts to fade away with too much alteration and it's hard to know where that line is. I think having a derm/surgeon who has an artistic eye is super important. I got chin filler (injury to my jaw, long story, made me feel better about my face). When my derm was injecting it, he purposely did not fill my mental crease. He said it was an important defining feature of my face and looked better natural. I appreciated that so much.

As a cosmetic chemist for the last 25 years the biggest advice would be: take good care of your skin from teen until 20's (it doesn't have to be expensive, consistency is key), in your 20's go from basic skincare to add a few more specific serums and such because ageing begins, in your 30's get more precice additions to your specific skincare needs, in your 40's continue with this with more hydrating and emollient products, in your 50's and beyond always take care of your skin by adressing your specific concerns. AND ALWAYS include sunscreen every day. Having had advantages because of my carrier giving me direct knowledge of how certain products are formulated and ingredients in them work (or not), I have retained the look of my skin as if I were still in my 30's...and I am 54. I've never gotten anything done to my face/neck including peels and those such things. ALWAYS extend your skincare down your neck as this is vitally important. So, my advice for the young girls out there wondering how to maintain your youthful and natural look throughout your life (not comparing yourself to the current trend) without filler, botox and whatever else others feel they need to do, just take diligent care of your skin. ❤

The only thing I'd add to your comment is that not everybody needs more "hydrating and emollient products" starting in their 40s. Some people continue to have oily skin into old age. So don't assume you need to moisturize more as you get older. Pay attention to your skin and treat it accordingly. And sunscreen ALWAYS! In my case, I've had very dry skin since I took Accutane. Heavy moisturizers are my friend! But even I don't need to moisturize as heavily in hot, humid weather.

The problem with any blanket advice is that no one regimen will suit all people. Best bet is to find out what works for you, learn to read your skin, get proper nutrition and hydration(the best source of all the good skin stuff), and get moving (circulation boosts nutrient supply and it stimulates collagen, especially if you are getting enough protein). Aging is individual. Everyone has a finite quantity of stem cells to repair and renew but not all have the same quantity. Appreciate your body for what it can do and does and recognize that while your skin is the biggest organ, it isn’t the only one.

@@SamBaker-z9h It depends on how the serum is formulated. Many are formulated with ingredients that cannot "penetrate " the epidermis down to the dermis. The molecules are generally too large for an active ingredient to pass. There are few that do but most don't. If the ingredient were able to penetrate deep enough to work the formula would need to undergo vigorous testing through the FDA (expensive!!!) to prove that it does indeed penetrate to effectively meet the claims the manufacturer makes and would be labeled as an OTC product. So, the company that would like to make the "penetrate " claim might indeed contain contain that active ingredient at a certain percentage but cannot use that specific wording. They would probably say something like "contains an ingredient known to blah, blah, blah..." So, the formulas may have this ingredient but cannot make any claims. Or, it may not include any ingredients that actually work and word it in such a way to make it seem as though it it does. It is very complicated and everything must go through a lawyer(s) to check the wording of the product so as not to make any drug (OTC) claim. Hope that makes sense. The most common ingredient that many companies use that does NOT work is collagen. When choosing a serum or any other form of topically applied product it is imperative that you read the wording carefully. Some products do make OTC claims but can slip throught the FDA's notice and fool the customer, unfortunately. There are always some unscrupulous companies around...even big named companies. Other ingredients may work on the surface of the skin like sodium hyaluronate (draws moisture to the skin) or an occlusive ingredient that (helps keep moisture from leaving the skin). As I said before it is very complicated. Percentages of ingredients also matter in this regard but those are not privy to the consumer. I could go on and on...but there is a reason certain professional training and experience are needed by companies that manufacture skin care/cosmetics. Also, ingredient labels that list all those botanical extracts that are "good" for the skin may be in the product but just because you see them listed doesn't mean that they do anything positive for the skin. !!! You are doing some very positive things for your skin as you mentioned such as using castor oil and sunscreen. But each individual is unique and may require a more specific regimen.

You know, i recently got IPL for my broken blood vessels and i had basically a super bruised up face. It was so interesting to observe the shift on how people behaved towards me. People thought i looked younger (acne association), many looled shocked or disgusted at me (not knowing what it was), some were reallly nice (would they have been if i hadnt been like that? Was it out of solidarity? Pitty? Genuinely they didnt care?), and some were not as nice to me (screw them!). But it was so weird because in an instant i was taken from looking nice to being in a body that caused reactions in people. It was so freaking nuanced, but the thing that came to mind was that it was extremely hard to escape that feeling of self conciousness because it was very justified. I now have so much more sympathy for those who have to deal with it on their day to day.

Such a difference. I feel normal again. I use oil of olay, bha, and moisturizer/spf. Minimum makeup. Lots of water, no smoking, no drinking. I looked in the mirror yesterday and was like “damn I look good” I loved my face. I love that I don’t compare myself to others anymore. I don’t ever want to get back on social media and again I am rarely on KZbin and it’s usually to search on how to do something house related. Kylie does not look normal. So, I think about my deathbed quite a lot. Not in a negative way, I'm a perfectly healthy 30yo woman lol. But I use it as a "will THIS matter when I'm THERE?" kinda way. I was horrifically bullied as a teen. I had super short hair that I had to buzz cut due to my trichotillomania. Now it's thick, full and so long it's passed my bum. But I so vividly remember how insecure I was. And just like my insecurity in my appearance was temporary, I must remember that outwardly beautiful things are temporary too. God willing, I will be old and wrinkly one day. And all of what I have now will have faded. Not even my own children will remember the way I look now, but they will have the older version of me in their heart and memory. I think the true way to feel beautiful, is to not have it on that high a pedistal. Will your beauty matter on your deathbed? Will you reminisce about it to your children or your spouse? Or will you be thinking of other things? Yes, beauty is something we all want, because why not? And by all means, go for it. But when it holds such value in your life, that life passes you by, maybe you need to reconsider some things and the position of priority they hold. Memento mori. Remember your death.

Everyone is so fixated on this “If I can fix this one superficial thing and perfect it, then my life will be perfect”. When you get older, from the people I have met while visiting the nursing home, what you care about are your memories, that you made them and you can hold on to them, and your mobility. It becomes really obvious, the people who spent time, and money, wisely. I struggle with this myself but am recognizing that at the end of the day, aging happens. The only way it doesn’t is if your life is cut short. I’d rather not waste any more time worrying about how young or old I look but rather focus on making my future brighter and keeping my body feeling young.

Very important reflection! I find myself already looking for the natural features of people on screen bc that’s what most attractive actually!! That’s what you fall in love with!

I remember when I first saw Lana del Rey I thought to myself, wow she has a lot of surgery, but nowadays she looks like a very normal girl.

I was just thinking about this the other day! When she first came out, she stood out because of her obviously made up face. It's crazy how plastic surgery has become so normalized!

I'd love to see a video on what seems to be a lack of ethics in cosmetic surgeons as well. I personally believe plastic surgery etc. should require at least 1 year of psychological evaluation for patients prior to cosmetic alterations in case there is a body dispmorphic disorder situation involved.🙏🙏🙏

If they force trans people to do it, then yeah expect the cisgender people to at least go to maybe 4 months of therapy. 😂

I'm a bit late to this video but I really needed to see this today. I've been struggling with my self-esteem as I see my body age, and struggle to lose weight, and it's nice to have a reminder that it's not all about appearance.

What I struggle with is that due to a thyroid condition diagnosed in my 20’s, no one ever told me I would steadily lose my hair as decades passed. Now in my 60’s, on top of having lost most of my hair, I have an eating disorder and body dysmorphia. So I hope you’ll pardon me if worrying about pores and cosmetic procedures trying to achieve unattainable results, I don’t consider in the same category. These are very disheartening changes happening to women that I suppose can still be viewed as obsessing over what you look like, but in ways that aren’t so easily fixed. I am not a cosmetic surgery type of woman, and my self confidence is so low that I don’t even feel I could pull off wearing a wig. I consider those very real unattainable cosmetic surgery procedures that many people in the same or similar age groups have to deal with, which makes worrying about filters seem negligible.

I'm a trans woman and I plan on getting facial feminization surgery. I'm nervous to do that though because I'm afraid of being made to look the exact same as everyone else who gets facial cosmetic surgery. I want to resist the urge to go after the "beauty standard", because that's something I would be chasing forever. All I want is to look like a more "fem-passing" version of myself. I don't want some surgeon to talk me into turning my strong jawline into a heart shaped one or my prominent nose into a tiny upturned ski-slope. Many cis women already have similar features to me and I think they're beautiful. Videos like this are really helpful for me as I work myself up to getting my surgery, because if I'm going to do it I want to do it for the right reasons, be in the right head-space, and put some serious thought into what is right for me.

If it’s a good plastic surgeon they will already have in mind what you just said and I think you will feel if it’s the right person for you. Anyway, good luck.

I'm in the UK and I'm absolutely ROLLING at you putting Katie Price as the before to the old lady that now looks like someone with feline protestic 😂😂😂😂. They aren't the same people. Katie Price has had TONS, but they are most definitely 2 very different humans and 2 very different ages 😂😂😂😂

Thank you for having this conversation and being a positive influence. Nowadays it seems like the attitude is that it's not acceptable or progressive or body positive to challenge the negative reach of cosmetic procedures. We can acknowledge that the people who get these procedures are not wrong for having done so, but the industry is a big problem. It is unethical and predatory.
