A clip recently went around the Internet where well respected pastor Alistair Begg gave some advice on attending weddings that differ from the Bible's stance on marriage. This has led to many conservatives writing Begg off completely and even John MacArthur uninviting him to speak at Shepherds Conference this coming year.

Well, there are pastors who disappoint us by being weak on issues like attending a perverse wedding, and there are pastors who excommunicate women for protecting their children from perverted and abusive husbands and thse pastors don't repent even when told they need to. I think I know which is more serious.

MacArthur actually gave advice to a question a few years ago that a baker could make a wedding cake for a gay wedding and it not be a sin. Yet here he is disinviting Alister Begg....

Ligonier Ministries posted a response to attending LGBQT "wedding" rooted in sound exegesis of the Luke 15 prodigal son passage yet did so with compassion and courage. Alistair is one of their own who has spoken at many of their conferences. Many will disagree with me but these men are rightly pointing out where Alistair erred not because they are judgmental, harsh or condemning but because they indeed love him enough to take issue with his public statement and thus publicly correct (not rebuke) what he said. I have no doubt these same men aren't personally ministering to him as wel. This is opposed to JMAC who unceremoniously banned him from his Shepeherd's Conference...regardless Dr. Begg needs our prayers. Frankly I am concerned for him and his physical well being. He hasn't looked that well nor been as clear as normal even before this issue went public. I suffer from a rare blood disorder which often affects me neurologically. It is not an excuse but has and does influence my actions and attitudes. Tragically far too often the visible church neglects this possibilty because its kneejerk reaction is to assume I am sinning and heretical when I just need a dose of cortisone...

Sad how we now make him this bad guy, this is us Christians at our best - divisive and condemning each other. The discussion should be how do reach out to people that are truly struggling with issues in loving Christian way. I don't agree with what he said, but have you ever listened to his sermon about the man in the middle?

I don't know what the controversy is about. However, I like Alistair Begg and I respect him a lot more than Mcarthur.

Is being disinvited from “Shepherds” (I use the term very lightly) conference really such a terrible thing? Maybe God is trying to protect Begg from being affiliated with that organization.

My response to it is this, Alistair will have to stand in front of the Lord and give an account for that decision... But if the Lord says "Bring all the Christians that made concessions or compromises in any way before Me to give an account" ALL of us will have to stand right next to Alistair. We're all guilty, and we all will have to give an account so condemning Alistair actually starts with us first. (speck in one eye, beam in the other) The Bible says the Lord looks at the intents of the heart more than the action. I find that interesting...

My thoughts. Attending a wedding when either party, bride or groom, previously divorced outside biblical grounds. Yay nor nay? Or in this case...should we, or should we not, counsel parents and grandparents to attend?

I disagree with Alistair; I think he made the wrong call. However, he was very careful to point at that this was his counsel to this one person in this one circumstance. He even clarified and said he might counsel someone else to stay far away from such an event. Some are acting like he is commanding all Christians to go to all unbiblical "weddings". The backlash is ridiculous.

If I had a gay grandson or granddaughter or a gay son or daughter, I would go to the wedding. We are to love our family.

It isn't loving to support someone in their sin against God, and it is also a sin to go to an obscene event where you will be witnessing homosexuality.

It’s going to be tough Dean ,Two local Christian radio stations dropped him last week, and Ligonier just removed his content from Reff Net streaming. Ligonier is also going to make a statement about her future plans concerning him . Not too sure on folks like crossway that published some of Begg’s books but crossway is a partner with Ligonier on Reff Net so they will probably have something to say. I like Begg I don’t agree with him here too . This is happening really fast and no one is taking the time to think. Thanks for the video Dean Blessings to you and your family. Bill

I agree with you about the internet insanity regarding Alistair Begg's "advice," if you will. I do not agree with Begg's advice as it is not biblically sound. However, the furor that poured out against him was beyond reason. It reminded me of the Salem witch hunt/trials of early America. All human beings are sinners. We are all under God's judgement for our sins. Sinners need to stop with the attack on Begg and work on their own sins. Let other experienced pastors try to help Begg to see the error in his thinking.

Appreciated your thoughts. The gossip has been sickening. So many usurping God's place of judgement. I wonder what they would have said to Paul in 1 Cor.9:19-23- was he compromising? We should be praying for Alistair and become satans mouthpiece- Rev.12:10, 2 Cor.2:11

The arguments I hear people making against Begg's position are interesting because those same people seem to think it would be okay to go to a wedding where one member of the couple was saved and the other wasn't as long as its a man and a women.

Alistair Begg is no Ravi Zacharias. Unfortunately, Alistair Begg is a public figure, so any comment he makes can become public. The wedding advice was not a teaching from the pulpit or personal belief. The pounce on him is so sad. Let it go.

Agree 100% with Begg. I have 2 step kids (young adults) who identify as gay. When they get “married” (which isn’t marriage at all) I will attend just the same way I have them into our home, the same way I invite them to go places with us, the same way I love them a myriad of ways even tho they know I believe their choices are sin and not good for them. The hypocrisy on this issue in the church (especially the reformed church) is embarrassing. Everyone wants to stand in protest of the homosexually sinful wedding but cheers to the heterosexually sinful wedding. 🥂 🙄

I am one hundred percent with Begg. Jesus ate with sinners he hang around sinners. If you used the standard being applied to Begg's advice to Jesus, Jesus wouldn't be a Christian. Begg said go out of love. And possibly you can reach out to them, to bring them Jesus. Begg acted as Jesus commands us to do. Now listening to what you are saying. I respect what you are saying and you shown more of a fairness about the issue. I like you and I am staying with you. But man do we disagree on some things. God Bless you. Again you are shown more intelligence than some.

I think I agree with you. I have always liked Alister Begg. I don’t really agree with him on this issue, but I’ve never so far been in the situation. But like he said, his response was based on that one instance. His response may be different for someone else.

It works out to to unjust weights and measures, the sin of partiality. Other people can say things, or do things that are equally outrageous or even more egregious, but they get a free pass based on the level of 'respect' or idolatry. When they are called out, the fan base rallies to their defence and goes on the attack to dare suggest that they may have sinned in speech, counsel or behaviour. They get their picture on Fresca cans, Sweat shirts with large print say that "Life is better with them", names like The Evangelical Pope, accolades like it would take 40 thousand to equal on of said perso, or no one has had more impact on the church since the apostles----stuff like that. But, Alistair Begg says one thing, that people disagree with and he gets pilloried, condemned, canceled. if he lived several hundred years ago these people would happily light a fire under his feet.

I don’t get it. McArhur once said that it was OK for a baker to bake a cake for same-sex weddings. Yet McArthur excludes Alastair Begg from the Shepherd’s Conference for suggesting that Christians can attend same-sex weddings. 😮

Maybe this is the same instance, maybe not. He said that it is not a sin for someone to bake a cake for a gay wedding anymore than it is to serve a gay couple at your restaurant. However, the government shouldn’t be able to enforce such laws as to fine someone for following their conscience and that if that violates your conscience to bake the cake, then you shouldn’t. That’s what I gathered from what he was saying.

As Daniel prayed for the king of babylon .. a grandma fervently prayed for her lesian grand daughter and the lord told the grand daughter to stop living in sin .. prayer is the best answer .. & don't attend the wedding but be kind & direct in love ❤️‍🔥🧖

What I think is lost in this discussion is that I don’t think it’s wise for a pastor to proscribe a certain course of action for a very complex issue. Maybe Begg could have helped the grandma come to her own conclusions based on her unique situation, convictions, etc…. But evangelicalism is so authoritarian at this point that nobody notices.

I would like to hear Underdog unpack what a preacher could say that would cause him to say, "Yeah, that is too grevious a sinful statement. He needs to be removed from pastoring."

This is not a bypass issue that we can just skate over. What Begg said was that serious and his doubling down makes it worse. I'm sorry this is happening because I highly respect him but he can't play the relativity card. Disagreement on this issue is something big. Whatever deplatforming that's happening to him and truth for life is warranted.
