The All USED $473 GAMING PC ($630 AUD) - ProjectNegativeSquared

Here is a PC that costs $473 USD (or $630 AUD) and finally made it in the end (ONLY JUST though lol) to get some really high frame rates in Overwatch, CS:GO, Dota 2, and GTA 5. Though Mafia 3 was really tough to run, but still managed to get around 60 fps, which was good.
I ended up with a 4690k that overclocked to an impressive 4.8ghz, but this time around it SERIOUSLY needed a delid, with the temperature drops being incredible... The GPU used was the R9-290x and man the die on this thing is HUGE, and of course with that was huge power output, with the card still managing to heat up an accelero with fans speeds near max.... I would hate to see how bad the stock cooler would be (didn't even try after hearing all the bad stories about it). Anyway after all the problems were solved this PC did come together to make a really good experience :). In the end i decided to call it negative squared, since when they are squared they come out as a positive :D.

Probably a bent/dead pin responsible for the dead RAM channel. I have seen it quite a few times. I have also seen boards with pins missing entirely or with a pin broken off from the PCB yet still held in place by the socket. Either way, it doesn't seem to hurt the gaming performance too much so who cares anyway :P

The 290X is one of the reasons people think AMD cards are hot. They really fucked up with the cooler on there. The posterchild of "hotter, faster, better"
@MrRoboman333
@MrRoboman333 7 жыл бұрын
They did what they had to do with the money they had, man. They had great performance and continue to age better than nvidia cards of that time period, it's just they didn't put a good enough cooler on it. Nvidia has market dominance not because their products are objectively better but because people refuse to consider AMD, even when their cards are top notch like they have been with Polaris in the past couple months.
@MrRoboman333
@MrRoboman333 7 жыл бұрын
I mean I agree with you it has some problems but so does Nvidia. The 580 is an excellent card with great drivers and hands the 1060 it's lunch, people should be buying more 480s and 580s now if their purchases were just based on quality and value alone. People favor Nvidia for the brand name alone. Just like people go for Apple over Android even if android has better value, it's for the brand because "AMD is cheap and runs hot".
@arbalest7645
@arbalest7645 7 жыл бұрын
I agree because take vega 56. It's on par with a gtx 1070 and the 1070 use 1 x 8 pin connector. The vega 56 has 2 x 8 pin connector. It is very power hungry but like the fx series, it doesn't outperform everything.

the r9 290/290x and 390/390x (same cards) do run quite hot, the best way to mitigate this is keep it away from long term 100% usage by using vsync, adding more fans to improve airflow in the case, or water cooling.

Sometimes the mounting screws for the Cooler Master CPU cooler can cause a short on the motherboard which causes the RAM to function only in single channel mode. I had a similar problem with an ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming a few months back. You might want to check if the top mounting screws still have the silicone on them.

For anyone, I wouldn't recommend using cotton buds to spread any type of thermal paste as the micro fibers on the buds can easily break apart, separate and mix in with the thermal paste. The GPU wafers can withstand light pressure from the plastic thermal paste tube anyway so giving it a little twirl with the tube head is good enough.

Only thing I would suggest for 290X overclocking is stick to 1250 or 1375 or 1500Mhz memory overclock.

You stick to the one closer or you mod the memory. If you go over 1375MHz to 1390MHz it will use 1500MHz timings and perform worse. 1250, 1375, 1500 are highest clocks with lowest timings.

Hey! You should check the prices on the HP z600 boxes used, you can snag one for well under $200 with a fairly decent set of dual Intel quads that are hyperthreaded. The main appeal of this is the minimal amount of effort to make it in a system, all you need is to drop in the GPU, and then presto! sub $400 badass rig complete!

Guide to a BUDGET (1050 with older Xeon) pc with keyboard, mouse and monitor for around $490 (AUD).PLZ upvote for others to see! Might not work, just a idea. The pc has 280W PSU which will be enough. Also, u will have to get a better cooler for the cpu if u want around 50Degrees C because the Xeon produces lots of heat and the stock cooler fan is quite slow to keep it quiet. If u are wondering, I have bought that exact pc from that seller. I also bought that CPU and put it in the computer. Temps are around 75c while moderate gaming. BTW I did buy that GPU in it, I put a GT 710 to make it powerful enough to basic stuff but I was never gonna use it for gaming so I didn't buy the GTX 1050. I apologize for such a basic comment, but where you mentioned the overclock for benchmarking was too agressive for everyday use, I get it in principle that this card was operating far above its originally designed spec. On the other hand, how do you determine what level of overclocking is suitable for long term use? Is it a rule-of-thumb multiplier of the original clock speed (i.e. I can usually go 1.25x the stated speed), or is it based on certain cues gathered from diagnostics and testing?

where do you get these low-priced PSUs from? Here in Germany I can't get a psu below 25$, even used. (except some dubious extremely low quality eBay PSUs. but even these cost 30$ or more most of the time)

Hi, can you show the Vore on the 290X ? +25mV looks a little to low for 1100/1400, or you have a very good card. Thanks.

the gpu is not "thermal throttling" but amperage throttling thus hitting the manufacturer max power draw limit. make sure you added the plus 50% max allowed for the card when overclocking. if you did than maybe that's the max it can go.

Hey Bryan i am currently running a 4690k on a Asus rog maximus vii ranger with a deepcool assassin which I find to be more than enough for my current settings of 4.6 ghz at 1.266v. I tried 4.7 but that required more than 1.3v which imo was too much of a voltage increase from 4.6. What would you say is a safe 24/7 V core as I don't mind bumping the volts to get more frequency from my chip as temps under load are around 60+°C.

I would love a video, comparing image quality of Gfx cards, i would imagine, older cards would have less compression and better quality at lower frame rates :)

Hey dude, try cleaning the memory, had some ram I thought was dead but found it just needeed some cleaning. Also, on deliding, are their any other methods of doing so? I tried to delid with a smaller /cheaper vice and it nearly broke my 4790k(some off the top layer of the pcb came off) still works tho, so other metheds that might work? Cheers.

I've seen the same issue with the 2 memory slots not working before - it was actually due to a faulty CPU (i5-6400 in this case). Is it really the MoBo and not the CPU?

Mafia 3 surely is a piece of work to run. Somewhat decently stable 60fps atm but still dropping to mid 40 when driving fast in town. Not to mention the horrible graphical quality it presents when "stock". Some ReShade and tweaking and it looks like a game that I could somewhat put out to sell :D Maybe my Mafia glasses are too tight on my head but I still mostly enjoy that game, maybe bcuz I'm all about dem tweaks and workarounds.

Ive a 290 cf setup, and its running every game on high settings on 4k. When Im not hitting 60 fps I either adjust the settings, or in the worst case I go to 1440p. Same is for non cf supported games, if not 4k, 1440p is also easily achieved by only 1 active card. And well, in winter I need no heater.

guys i have a question about overclocking, i know a couple people that own gaming pcs and build them, one of them does it as work. and whenever i start about overclocking they always tell me that its the worst thing you can do because you destroy your pc and it overheats. is this bullshit or is overclocking something you really only should do when you have no other choice?

Hey Brian, have you ever had a look at a ID-COOLING FrostFlow 240G GPU Liquid Cooler as an option? Ive installed one of my r9 290x and it keeps it below 62 Degrees during the Aussie summer. Its only $109, pretty cheap compared to other gpu aio's!
