I would over-perform when I worked nights because I would get anxious about getting yelled at by management and they eventually started over-relying on me to help out other areas who were behind on freight, it actually resulted in back/sciatic nerve pain and frequent panic attacks. Thankfully my workload on days is a lot more manageable, basically just zone my area and do my area returns.

I remember someone saying on Twitter that during that this episode was probably the closest we got to witnessing an abstraction. If Pomni hadn't spoken to Gangle during that moment where the camera is zooming in on her during the closing shift, she mostly would have abstracted then be sent to the basement like Kofmo.
@pundertalefan4391
@pundertalefan4391 28 күн бұрын
I'm not so sure about that. Like, maybe? If she was lost enough in her mind, it might happen. But Gooseworx said that abstraction is losing all sense of self. As someone who's been in that headspace many times, it doesn't feel like I'm losing who I am. It feels like there's too much of who I am. But that's just my interpretation.

This episode really nails the effects of depression. Gangle is wearing a mask she is unfamiliar with that covers up her tragic face. She's snapping at the dream of being a manga artist towards Jax despite that being her dream in an act of projection. Every criticism she gets feels like her soul being shattered. Then there's her standing listless and sad while staring into space at the end of the day. I know because I've done that as someone who suffers from depression. Thank goodness Pomni and Zooble were there to provide some support.

I also think Ragatha being there at times does help, but sadly, you face the fear or judgment of genuine caring when you are being nice. Like I feel Ragatha does help in a daily or constant way, like talking or listening to Gangle, but sadly was knocked out with the sauce thing so couldn't had been there for that. Like you know what Pomni did at the end, offer to close up, Ragatha would had offered too.

The thing about Pomni and her deal with Gummygoo, she did accept that he's not coming back in the scene you said she needed to let him go. She realized that she would just be putting him through all that again and she didn't want that. So, she wished him a good day, as a way to accept the reality of the situation.

Goes to show just how real the episode was, despite the cartoon characters. Instead of some fantastical world like the candy kingdom or the haunted mansion, a fast food joint is something real people know all too well. The fact there was virtually no music once the troupe got to the fast food place just made it all the more haunting.
@conflictbrooks

I've never even worked in retail but I think this episode made me feel how soul-crushing and monotonous it is. It has this melancholic atmosphere with the lack of music, loud noises, excitement, or even a clear objective or sense of time. The characters are just _there_ with no purpose other than exist and do the jobs they were assigned. The melancholic feeling even followed me outside the episode and I just kinda felt _bad_ for a few hours after watching. Mildenhall Manor's creepy scenes were "creepy" in a fun way,-they kinda felt like both a sendup and a love letter to horror game cliches. This episode is unsettling in a much more real way. It's _definitely_ the most unsettling episode of the series so far.
@LuznoLindo
@LuznoLindo Ай бұрын
@conflictbrooks It is unsettling because it is real. People cannot relate to a magical kingdom of candy or an abandoned mansion filled with ghosts. But people can absolutely relate to working at a dead-end job, dreading that you may be working there for most of your life. That is why reactors have been talking about their retail traumas instead of their "candy kingdom" traumas: Because the former is real.

@@That_Doctor_Del_Fella Exactly my thoughts as well. Its my personal belief that a creator should know when to end a story. Great example of this are shows such as Gravity falls, or Breaking Bad. Its insane to me that The Walking Dead is gone on for as long as it has, 11 seasons and multiple spin off shows. Thats what you call turning your product into a cashgrab.

Maybe a few shorts, but no second season. Additionally, she confirmed that each additional episode would center around a specific character. This holds up as she said Gangle would be fourth. Ragatha will be fifth and Jax will be sixth. Seven, Eight, and Nine remain a mystery.

Let's see.... ●"Curiosity killed the cat" means dont stick your nose into something *we dont want you to know*. "But satisfaction brought it back" was the forgotten second half, implying you might find something worth the risk of curiosity. ● then there's the "blood is thicker than water." Leaving out "blood of the covenant" and "water of the womb." Original quote implies that the bond created between two unrelated people is sometimes more important than a bad/abusive person simply being related through genetic ties.

The fear of punishment can be a pretty good motivator, especially if it's a punishment for being the worst of the bunch. It's like that joke about outrunning a bear. You don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than someone else.

Something I notice not mentioned a lot is the Halloween 3 reference when Jax gets held and forced to watch the flashing comedy/tragedy masks. In movie it was just a flashing jack-o-lantern, but the music is the exact same. It also might've killed a ton of kids in the movie. Fun!

10:19 I mean, yeah, I kinda am too. I worked at a mom and pop shop drive-in for two and a half years, when I was a sophomore in high school. Even mere four hour shifts were exhausting. The heat from the grill and fryer, the ringing of the phone, the rush to make orders, and all of them have something different, and you have to watch it all and make sure nothing burns. I usually worked the grill, but I'd also usually do fryer when the usual guy wasn't there. I also did the phone when nobody was available to do it. That said, I do really miss the discounts I used to get for making myself food there. Tenderloins and double cheeseburgers, the buns toasted, and eaten with crinkle fries and either cheese curds or cheese sticks. The shakes were EXTRA THICCC, and Chocolate with peanut butter was my usual whenever I got it, usually on weekends.

41:26 dang😂 guess Zooble was right, Caine might not understand people, he's an AI after all, but he 'does' love em❤ like for real, Kinger, Jax especially, and Ragatha too unfortunately should've gotten worser scores but didn't just because, which in my opinion is okay because again it shows he does care about them❤

Jax was weirdly nice this episode he really didn't shun anyone well aside throwing rag in the deep fryer and slightly annoyed at Gangle he was merely mad at the adventure like he even had a moment with pomni and asked her how she was doing and even at the very beginning he apologized immediately for breaking Gangles mask it might just be me but I think rag intentionally escalated it just to argue with Jax

And by the way, 24:18 at least you had a training video, I went into my job not knowing how to change a compressor or even braze a copper pipe, I was only shown once then left alone to figure it out. I've got a feeling that Gangles Mask is not just a play on "hiding emotions", but also an alegory for Medication. Now i am neither a professionel, nor a patient. Im just saying as im seeing. Gangle gives me the feeling that she has Depression. And i have heard that you dont just get one pill and everything is ok. It is a mix of Medication and a long journey of trial and error. Your Therapist and Psychologist give and watch. Hoping they will find the combination that works for you fast. "The mask was'nt the right one" gives me "the medication was'nt right" vibes.

Dude, I had no idea the full quote was "The customer is always right in matters of taste," they really do love hacking off that last bit and turning customers into entitled idiot bastards with no sense of consideration for what the worker actual goes through, or even just what's actually possible to do. I worked part-time at a fast food place for several months, but it was mostly in terms of clean-up than customer interaction, so I don't have many "customer horror stories," but I know from other tales and seeing videos just how bad things can get. This is just speculation, but perhaps Caine wanted to do another horror-themed adventure right after the last one because Zooble didn't even bother hearing out what the adventure was, and now that they're here this time, maybe they'll actually go on an adventure this time. Of course, Caine gets annoyed when Pomni described what happened last time and Zooble just asks "Why did you think I would like that?" so no go for horror adventures it seems. Speaking of Caine, I can't help but think that the suggestion for more "normal" adventures and the idea of punishing players who don't perform well might be something that gets carried over into other episodes... Which is kind of a terrifying thought, especially since Caine overruled Zooble's desire to skip the adventure again. I initially thought Caine glitching out at the end was just a gag... but could it be more than that? Is something happening to Caine that could put the entire Digital Circus at risk? I realize I ended up talking more about Caine than the other characters here... Maybe it's because everyone else already said what should be said about all that, though I WILL point out that it's not like Gangle asked to be the shift manager, Caine just appointed her to the position arbitrarily. Not to mention she DID try to help Ragatha at least, until Ragatha brushed her off and insulted her. Still, even if she didn't outright ask for this specific adventure, the fact that she's at least partially responsible for everyone having a miserable time, which on top of Jax and Ragatha saying they don't like her when she's "happy", sent Gangle to a pretty dark place... I agree that it's she might have abstracted had Pomni not stepped in and offered to close up in her place. Caine, though... Can Caine abstract, or is it just humans that can abstract? I actually don't know...

Oooooh, that bit about being delegated and voluntold to do other stations' work after doing your own....that's why more recent jobs (especially retail and food service) have that final caveat of 'any task required of you' at the end of the job description, usually after a metric fuckton of OTHER things to do, because folks started complaining. One of my past jobs was cashier. Job descriptions said 'cashier'. I ended up being a cashier, a stocker, cleanup, inventory, AND opener and closer. They wanna keep the number of hires down while delegating the tasks of three people onto one just to save a few bucks.

22:56 while Gumi doesn't exactly remember, you can clearly tell both in how he tells her good day and how he actually tries to raise his hand out to her as she says his name. There's clearly a sense of recognition on his face. I feel like he didn't get completely mind wiped. I say he probably got mostly mind-wiped but there is probably some things still left inside and it definitely is going to be brought up in a later episode. He's definitely going to get his full Memories Back

I hear you about the problems regarding “the customer is always right” but I think the problem stems deeper than managers leaving out that final part of the phrase to their employees. It’s used more and more by customers themselves who think the phrase gives them entitlement over those who run the business so they can get whatever they want. The problem is customers think the phrase is a Right they have as a customer and not a store policy the company can choose to follow or Not. Any store can deny service or sales if you are “that guy” and/or call the authorities should things escalate.
