The Rode NT-USB+ takes the Rodecaster Pro 2's preamps and puts them into what's pretty much the best sounding USB microphone I've found. Let's take a closer look/listen and also compare it to my other favorite USB mic, the Sennheiser Profile.
And if you’re wondering, I said “USB Microphone” 21+ times throughout this video. I am not responsible for what happens if you decide to make this into a drinking game.

Episode 343: The Amazing Sounding Rode NT-USB+ vs. Sennheiser Profile

This video sold me on the Sennheiser Profile. Both mics seem great, and the Rode honestly sounds slightly better in my opinion, but the physical knobs and small form factor won me over on the Profile. I'm using it for calls while working or gaming, and having a relatively tiny mic that doesn't need a pop filter, really makes for an unobtrusive solution for really nice sound. The Rode would be my choice if I were recording, but for calls while doing other things, the unobtrusive design of the Profile is winning my money.

This is my conclusion too. I prefer the sound of the Rode in a side-by-side comparison, but the functionality of the Sennheiser is tough to beat (plus it does also sound awesome).

Just received my NT USB+. I already had the previous version and it was on par, maybe a head above the Blue Yeti. The USB+ though is on another level... Love it, but you are correct, it picks up every squeak, pen drop etc. Definitely need some noise cancelation, but I am loving it so far. Love your video's by the way, very informative and captivating. You have an infectious personality.

Thank you very much Tom for this informative and fun video! The asthetics of your studio are so great as well! Well done! :) Quick question: I want to get a mic for voice over jobs I record at home. From looking at your video I personally like the rode sound better and the sennheiser sounds a tiny bit mechanical. Thats why I would lean towards the rode. But do you think the rode is too bass heavy for such jobs where the sound should be more or less neutral?

Thanks for this video Tom! Would you mind elaborating on what settings to use in rode central (like you mentioned at the end of the video) to make the USB + sound good/better? For context I’ll be using this to record vocals for my music. Thanks again!
@flashmutex
@flashmutex Жыл бұрын
The Rode NT-USB+ is more expensive because it has much more functionality built in. It needs to be properly setup with the RODE Central software, because that's where you actually program the on-board chip with the following features: "compressor, noise gate, high-pass filters and the legendary APHEX® Aural Exciter™ and Big Bottom™". After programming the chip as desired, no software is needed because the settings are stored in the onboard chip.
@francoisguillon4766

So you think a rode nt usb mini with these same features would be better than a senheiser profile for voiceover ? Thanks
@flashmutex
@flashmutex Жыл бұрын
@@francoisguillon4766 Yes. It's a good mic. Make sure to adjust its high-pass filter and compressor to get the sound you want. Also, make sure to get close to it to get the bass of your voice. Putting it on a boom arm close to your mouth instead of letting it standing on the table makes a big difference.

@tombuck

I record everything internally to the cameras' cards so that it can be true 4K. The ATEM is wonderful, but I mainly only use it for streaming since it's limited to 1080. Up until May 2021 I was upscaling 1080 footage form my EOS R to 4K and it honestly looked pretty good!

Thank you for such a thorough and insightful review of two great USB mics, Tom! Inspired by this video, I bought the profile earlier this month (it was on sale!) for work Zoom calls. After a week, I had to return it. The sound was not as rich and clear on my non sound treated home office as I had hoped it would be or would be similar to the rode mini I have been using for a few years. Just received the Rode NT1+ today, and immediately fell in love with the sound and the fact that it still retained that Rode richness and clarity despite being rather far from me so that it’s out of frame (thanks for being so precise, Tiny 2 Osbot!) when I’m on Zoom. For some reason, I don’t really notice the size of the Rode mic although it is noticeably larger than the profile. A great investment that I know I will use for years to come. Thanks for all your work, Tom! 🎉

Hello Tom, I bought the Rode NT USB+ after previously owning the Rode NT USB mini, i am very happy with the quality of the USB+ but I'm facing an issue that I am wondering if you experienced reviewing the mic, hearing my voice in a recording or a third party monitoring software sounds great and fine, but hearing my voice using the phsycial zero latency port sounds very nasally, even tho while connected to the same port my voice sounds fine in recordings, it's only so nasally with the zero latency monitoring, is that common? Did you have the same experience with your unit? Is my voice supposed to sound the same in recordings as in zero latency monitoring?

I have a MacBook Pro and a complete novice when it comes to microphones and technology (and your content has been a great help, Tom). I'm looking for a decent USB mic for online meetings (Zoom, MS Teams). Although I prefer the sound of the Rode, I'm thinking for my use case, the Sennheiser is a better option with the physical controls and noise rejection. Can I ask a gain settings question, please? Does the physical gain control directly affect the software gain control in MacOS, or would you set the software gain to max and adjust via the mic control? Or something else? Thanks.
@iosdeals
@iosdeals Жыл бұрын
I more or less randomly picked up the Hyperx Quadcast S year or two ago, which at that time wasn't that much cheaper than this one, and I am rather satisfied with it, but for my use - audio/video conferencing, I really don't need to touch any settings, ever. I set the gain once and forget it - however, with that mic, the gain wheel at the bottom (or on top, with how I mounted it on an arm), I constantly mess with it when I reposition my mic and forget I should grab it from the top. I do use the mute on that, and I use the LED to turn from off to solid red when it's muted, but I also started using Stream Deck recently and control my mute from that solely. As I need a mic for my 2nd work desk, I will be picking up this Rode NT-USB+, because I don't see much of a gain (ehm) going for XLR and dedicated interface for that, and for my use, this one hits all the marks. But I can imagine for people doing actual recording/streaming, the missing gain control would be a problem (although it's still just USB mic, so could be even more convenient to map it to your mouse with something like logitech logi+ mouse selection or any other 3rd party utility. Or a stream deck type of action buttons.

Hey Tom! First of all thank you very much for your review and your work here in general. After using the original Blue Yeti for almost 12 years it's really time for a change for my 16th podcast year and I really can't decide between the Sennheise Profile and the Rode NT-USB(+). Both really sound like the next step I want to make regarding my setup upgrade. That's why I would like to ask you how both handle background noise? Unfortunately every room here is pretty noisy and even with a bit of work there are a few sounds I still have to live with in my recordings. You already said in one of your videos that there's no mic that doesn't pick up background in some way, but perhaps one of the two does it better than the other? :D Greetings from Germany, all the best, thanks in advance and have an awesome weekend!

I honestly should’ve gone into the apps more here. They’re super powerful, and if you’re already used to EQ’ing with software, it’s essentially like having a virtual Rodecaster for the mic. 😎 That being said, if the Yeti is doing what you like, then maybe it’s worth sticking with!

Sounds silly, but as a consultant that is in meetings all day I have noticed that a good camera and mice do make you come across as more professional. The two main selling points for me are. It rejected the traveling sound like if I type on the keyboard while talking. And most important. No app needed. My current assignment is in a bank and ohh boy is my computer locked down. I can't even install the app to get the most out of my Logitech keyboard or mouse. And we are not allowed/able to use industry standard programs like resharper or postman due to security concerns. So the fact that this doesn't need an app is really a killer feature. Thank you.

Thank you! I honestly don't do much in terms of processing. With USB mics I usually record into either Quicktime or Adobe Audtiion and then add a little bit of Voice Isolation in Final Cut Pro (roughly 20%). With XLR mics running through the Rodecaster, I typically stick with the presets because I think Rode did a great job on them.

just ordered this and a foldable keyboard to demo songs with while traveling. will be easier than carrying around my interface + XLR cables and some sort of travel mic stand? lol and my thinking is that if you can produce a good recording with cheaper gear, you'll. I think the challenge will only improve my tracking/editing/mixing...especially on the EQ front. Nice video, thanks!

30 secs into video and I am already hooked with the NT-earely pun. LOL I'm gonna dig in into channel archive :) Edit: one thing that you forgot to mention is application: if you plan to play guitar and record it you probably better off with the mic that has stereo pattern. Those 2 mikes just do Cardioid Polar Pattern hence probably the price. Throw in 2 or 4 patterns and mic goes over into 170+ area :(

Hey man, i recently bought this mic for the ps5 and i am not happy. It sounds very odd and i think its because the gain is way to high. But i cannot control the gain from ps5... only the mic level on the ps5 sound settings. Its okay when i talk neutral but whenever i talk a little louder it just gets cranky. Do you have any idea what i can do?

Still using the Original version of the Rode NT-USB. Almost 6 years later it is still the best mic i have tried, WOULD HIGHLY recommend to anyone who doesnt want to spend CRAZY high amounts on a microphone and Rode's support has been absolutely AMAZING. Twice my mounting ring has broken and both time they sent me a new mounting ring completely free.

I'm actually getting rid of my NT USB. I have a pretty deep voice with some nasal aspects and the darker and more crunched tone of the NT USB just doesn't allow my voice to really cut through other audio.

I was looking for a comparison between Rode NT-USB+ and Sennheiser Profile. Only if the video title had mentioned this comparison, I could have jumped into your video much earlier and saved myself a lot of time. Will save some money as well, going ahead with the Profile. In Amazon India, NT-USB+ retails at US $ 225 and the Sennheiser Profile with boom arm retails at $ 150, the desk stand model sells at $ 90. Thanks for the great vid.

I haven't used the Revelator, so I can't speak to that one. The Profile is my favorite USB mic, so that gets the nod from me. Although the NT-USB+ really does sound incredible. I'm not a huge fan of the Mini because it needs to be right next to you to sound good and I've found positioning to be a little tricky.

Seeing as its built the same as the original the piece that screws into the boom arm has an adapter in it that you can adjust depending on the stand mount size so yes it can, does get annoying if you want to take it off and on cause you have to screw that whole piece with the knob on and off

If I am using a camera to record the videos - do I need to connect the mic to the camera? Or can I just use the microphone and then the camera will pick up the sound better?

Im looking for a good microphone for recording minecraft content. This review is super helpful. Im leaning toward the Senheiser bcs of the noise resistance and easy usability. I am however wondering if my voice as a female would sound good tho. Its higher pitched and maybe the warmer sounds of the Rode would be better? Do you have any advice on that?
@tombuck
@tombuck 5 ай бұрын
That's a great question! Out of the box the Rode will probably sound a little better, but honestly with a bit of EQ you can make the Sennheiser sound a bit more rich and full (it shouldn't be too tough to get a sound you like and then you can just save those settings as a preset in your editing software to apply to future clips super easily). I really like the Sennheiser's simplicity and ease of use, which is why I'd personally recommend it over the Rode.

Great comparison Tom, and the handling noise as well as the lack of the gain butoon - but most of all, a bit too boomy basses drove me towards the Sennheiser right away. I've watched the dedicated Sennheiser Profile video and liked it very much, but now in this comparison, it felt like the Sennheiser had this nice midrangey touch to it, elbeit listening to your voice. God knows if it would sound good on me, who lacks any significant depth in his voice. That's why I'm using the Shure MV7 btw. But I don't know, even the size of the Profile feels kind of "smoother" to the whole scene of watching someone in the camera frame, and the mic not taking up half of the screen estate 🙂
