You forgot to mention that Amerigo was the first European explorer, after the vikings, to reach the mainland. Columbus didn't reach the mainland until his second voyage, which was after Amerigo's first voyage.

Portugal: 1498 - João Fernandes Lavrador sighted what is now known as Labrador. 1500-1501 - Gaspar Corte-Real and his brother Miguel sailed to Greenland, Labrador, and possibly Newfoundland c. 1520 - João Álvares Fagundes explored the southern coast of Newfoundland and may have reached the mouth of the St. Lawrence River and the Nova Scotia coast

HOLY SMOKES, This was AWESOME!!! You covered about 10 of our chapters in 9:25!!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! This was waaaaay more fun then the text book. Plus, I only have peripheral vision. Helping our grandson this year has been quite difficult without the online lessons, which weren't included in our curriculum this year. This gave me a good overview of what he's learning. Definitely going to check out what else you have...Thanks again, very much appreciated. Take good care!

Excellent summative video, Mr. Beat! I plan on using your resource, along with Eric Langhorst's video resources on Jamestowne, to help introduce European colonization in North America. They're quick features that help with flipped assignments that generate conversations later on in the classroom. Have a great 2015-2016!

I know this isn't the pint of the video, but 1:56 is somewhat misleading, because Columbus actually set out to discover the sea route to India(hoping to profit from the lucrative spice trade which was now controlled by the Ottoman Empire). He called Native Americans Indians because he thought he had successfully reached India, which as we now know(and have known for a while now) wasn't true.

Amerigo Vespucci acquired the Spanish citizenship and changed his name to Américo Vespucio. The name América comes from Spanish "Américo", not from Latin (a dead language by that time).

I learned about some of this in 5th grade .I knew Vespuccip he is my favorite i named my minecraft after him naming it Amerigovespuccip .I think you pronounced Cabot name wrong .Do you know his real name is Giovanni Caboto.I knew About Cornado i did not know he found the grand canyon though.You said some thing about Hudson being abandoned i knew he died there but not that he was abandoned i heard some thing about going on a small boat and never came back
@iammrbeat9 жыл бұрын
+Ric Sch Heck yeah. Glad I could add to your already huge knowledge base. I knew Cabot had a different name, but John Cabot was his English name. I think I pronounced that one right. I think you mentioned his Italian name. He also had a Venetian name. I guess we need an American name for him, now. How about Lil' John Cabosh?
@joshuahunt89116 жыл бұрын
@@iammrbeat I know this is an old comment but back in the 90's in Newfoundland (pronounced more like "understand" funny enough) we had a 500th anniversary for John Cabot, with a replica of his ship The Matthew, so I'm very glad that you mentioned him!
