The Art of Parenting your Adult Children | Dr. Shehzad Saleem

Dr. Shehzad Saleem says parenting is a skill that people need to learn, and it requires a change in mindset. The Quran does not say that children must obey their parents; rather, it says we must treat them with kindness. Parents need to rethink the way they themselves were parented and understand that they cannot impose their worldviews on their adult children. Major life decisions like choice of career, spouse, place to live, etc., should be the prerogative of adult children. He says parents should focus on 3 things with their young children: 1) develop their moral sense so they are the best judge of right and wrong, 2) help them develop their natural aptitudes so they can use them to make a difference in their community, and 3) inculcate in them the desire for critical thinking so they can uncover and live by truth. These 3 things will help children to become independent human beings. Even so, children will naturally make mistakes, and Dr. Shehzad says parents can show grace and encourage their children to do better and be better.

Extremely warm and wise words, Dr Saleem. I once read a fantastic quotation from a child psychiatrist (sorry, their name I now forget): “One of the most imperative duties of a parent is to find out what kind of parent our children need us to be”. And most pertinently, how to nurture that optimal relationship and dynamic between parents and their children. In essence, I interpret this as Dr Saleem says, let’s try our best to inculcate in them a sense of right and wrong, and the sense of shame coupled with a sense of perspective with an openness that encourages them to come to us or someone and admit they went wrong in some respect. That’s the theory I subscribe to, now I must endeavour to implement this with my one children, both currently teenagers. Yes, also to the most salient of points he makes: what is the wisdom or intention for this edict or that command or instruction. Don’t impose, illustrate with reason, shared experience and honesty. We were all once young.

Not sure about this, if my child came back with a clown from college and said they wanted to get married, that would not be happening. How many times have your parents said no and it was for the best in the end? Thank god mine did otherwise I’m pretty sure I’d be in prison.
