-Regarding Killua: He did say that his family had strangers powers he didn't understand, and wondered with Wing if learning Nen could be the answer to that. Of course the way he easily recognized dragon dive despite not being able to see it before, name and all is something you would have to do a little bit of mental gymnastics, but nothing out of the realm of possibilities, if like I said, he already knew about his family powers, which he said he did, hell, he explained to Morel how Illumi needles worked in the last arc. -Phantom Troupe: They are called the phantom troupe for a reason. For what it looks like, the first time they were made partially public was in Yorknew (the members in the fliers, although it was never said those were phantom troupe members, that's the conclusion killua arrived), anything else didn't count because the mafia called out everything and didn't make their identities public (more explained in the manga). It's normal that the only people that recognize them through the series, or at least recognize some of the members, are top hunters like Mezaistom that leads the criminal branch, some mafia members, or some people of meteor city. -The Zoldycks is more of the same, they get recognized by name when they give it out, by looks only people that knows them or have worked with them know about their identities, which are again criminals, mafia, top hunters etc. Nothing about the or the phantom troup is inconsistent. -This is always funny to me, but no, Nen it was never stated to be something only the Hunter Asociation had a hold of and something of utter secrecy, and the world already is filled with fantasy stuff. They won't just teach it to anyone who applies to the exam because it can be dangerous, but that's it, hell, nen is something you can even get and learn without knowing about it. With that said, the teaching of it does try to be kept secret by the forces that know about it for something as simple as balance, which is a big theme in the succession arc war, it allows them to hold power and avoid chaos. -Neon thing is true, but you are assumming he is talking about Neon when it doesn't say anywhere that the daughter of the mafia he is talking about is her. I do think too that he is too talking about her, but that is not argument when it's not stated. -And the Ikalgo thing is true, but the plothole is not as much as him calling Hagya because that could be the name he is more familiar with and he doesn't have to know that he hates being called like that, but the fact that later he didn't know what he was called now. That said, by that point it has 0 effect on the plot knowing it or not.
@Fireball0063 жыл бұрын
Regarding your fourth point I wanted to add that using nen has literally nothing to do with the Hunters association, they get their cards before they learn nen and when Gon, Killua, and Kurapika learned about nen it wasn’t like they had to show their cards to them or anything they just learned it from random people, and hell Killua still didn’t even pass the exam at that point so it makes a lot of sense that random people would learn it.

I did always find it weird that Kalluto knew nen well enough to be inducted into the Phantom Troupe, while his older brother/the family's supposed favorite son found out about it pretty much by accident. It was one of the reasons why the Zoldycks were cool with Illumi putting a needle on Killua -- they knew he'd never stay away from Alluka otherwise. It's just easy to miss because a lot happen in the Zoldyck state in like a single episode.
@blackcat80yearsago962 жыл бұрын
One biggest flaw I think Killua has as a character is that he never had a goal of his own. (It was even joked about in a HxH movie) Him traveling with Gon was his escapism from the family and I don't think I'd count the "experiencing the outside world" as a goal since his assassin job allowed him to be away from home before but supervised I think. And yeah, him looking after Alluka does write him outside of the story and there's still no reason for Killua to have ties with or do anything hunter related (outside bits of slices where he may need some money) or assassin related unless Togashi can find a reason to put him back in the story and give him an actual goal. It looks like it will have something to do with Nanika originating from the dark continent (still feel like it's gonna center around Alluka's needs rather than for himself). Don't know what he'll do with Gon now since he already found his father and the story seems to shift on dark continent related stuff, I get the feeling Ging will become the protagonist for a long amount of time given his reasons ties more with where the story is heading, it will make sense.

@ali_p_q79203 жыл бұрын
I think that is something inherent to the shonen format. Carrying an improvised plot through weekly publications and make it work. Togashi does it surprisingly well, and I have a hunch he uses those hiatuses to his advantage, to ensure quality. There is no way one can write a proper story in typical shonen ridiculously tight weekly schedules. The series clearly took on a different turn, for the better, when nen was introduced, and that created some plot issues, especially around Killua. But one thing is for sure. Togashi explicitly shows in the manga that some people use nen (e.g. artists) even without knowing it. So, the easiest explanation is that Gon, Killua and Kurapika were all using nen (part of it, at least) during the hunter exam, even without knowing. Gon learned zetsu by himself, Killua learned many "techniques" from his family, which all can imply the use of nen to some extent, such as the after image thing that Netero sees Killua using. And Kurapika's red eyes were a special nen ability for the Kurta clan (Uvogin says they were strong). We could even go as further as saying that Illumi's needle implanted in Killua's head gave him some special nen skills, under control of the family. So, that could explain why he had seen dragon dive before, even without knowing how to use Gyo. That could be a "borrowed ability" granted by Illumi's nen implanted in Killua through the needle.

I've read a lot of shonen which didn't have these inconsistencies in worldbuilding. However fun it is that Togashi improvises the hell out of writing, it's not true that all shonen does this at all. I'd say it's more that you're only thinking of works which were probably inspired a lot by it(for example I definitely think jujutsu kaisen was heavily influenced). Not all shonen is weekly anyway. But a weekly one I'd give as an example would be world trigger, that's never had these sorts of worldbuilding plot holes.

That's because the troupe fully trusts Chrollo judgment, when he "figured it out" Hisoka they just accepted it because the explanation made sense but it was a risky move as Hisoka stated it worked because he knew Chrollo was that smart to "fill in the pieces" basically Hisoka outsmarted Chrollo in that situation. And if i remembered correctly Paku was the one that asked to read Hisoka's fortune but before Hisoka gave the fortune to her, he said "i wouldn't recommend it will give you a shock". That's was a actually a great move by Hisoka because it threw her off for a moment that gave time for him to use texture surprise on the paper and change a verse. Hisoka is damn smart and he pays attention to subtle changes in someone's psychological condition just like how he did it while fighthing Kastro. To address some of the plot holes: 1.: The phantom troupe being still able to walk around in public does make sense to some degree, first of all their name and faces were spread mostly amongst the mafia (and technically the members of the conditional auction but they never knew them as "the phantom troupe"), and their association to the commited crimes in yorknew also was only known to the mafia. The same mafia also presumed them dead after Kortopis ability was used, so it makes sense that the names and faces wouldnt have been spread very far (especially after their association with meteor city became known, so Chrollo participating in Heaven's arena while still being undercover does make sense. The Hei-Li goon instantly recognizing them after seeing them also makes sense to some degree as he is, again, a member of the mafia and it does seem plausible that their information was spread among the mafia organizations while not known by the general public. 2.: Killuah did not know nen prior to learning it from wing, but this does not mean that he wouldn't have heard stories of the abilities of his family ("grandpa once killed a target by raining golden dragons from the sky!"), without knowing how exactly they were performed or that they were in fact nen techniques. There are A LOT of magical beings and abilities in Hunter X Hunter (starting with the shapeshifting navigators/magical beasts) and it can be assumed that the general populace knows that things like these exist. This ties directly into point 3.: the fact that nen isn't generally known. Again it seems possible that alot of people have seen nen in it's use in some way (for instance at Heaven's arena) without knowing exactly what kind of "magic" was at work here. It's one thing to know that magic exists in some fashion and another to know the system behind it and that many different types of "magic" are really just applications of one thing. 4.: The Hunter association might prevent Nen becoming known to the general public by banning publy discourse about it or trying to control available information on it as much as they can. As such it makes sense that it's not something that everybody knows, but is known by some people, for instance bodyguards, criminals, underground fighters, mafia members usw., any place where secret transfer of this kind of information among members is possible. That being said, it makes no sense whatsoever that Tsierridnich didn't know about it as a mafia member himself especially since members of his mafia family know about it. The only possible explanation here is that this information was somehow intentionally kept from him, but yes this seems like a glaring plot hole.

Killua seeing dragon dive without the need for gyo just prove how visible the technique was. We also need to take Zeno's nature to account, he might view killua as his favorite grandson thus revealed this technique to him. This further emphasizes when he hand out his business card casually to the fellow assasins during the phantom troupe hunt. He had no problem to advertise his technique even it will cost him being stole by chrollo lucifer as he was confident enough with the flexiblity of his dragon dive technique. Also seeing him using that dragon dive as a some sort of transportation led me to believe that zeno had revealed this technique while he was travelling with his grandson killua for the assasination training.

1) it wouldn't surprise me at all that back when killua was training he would have tagged along in an assassination with zeno and was Shown the effects of dragon dive or at least told about it from a family member and explained as if it was an assassination technique. 2) The troupe are INFAMOUS throughout the world in name only and were never seen prior to the YN arc , and even after being seen by the mafia it was never shared on the internet / media , or at least it was never shown . and even when the bounty hunt was set up by the mafia it was never explicitely stated who the targets were , just that they attacked the auction. Hence why gon and company never knew the troupe until killua deduced it from the situation. And it also makes sense to me that info about the troupe would circle in mafia circles after these big incidents that reshaped the mafia structure (as the kakin mafia members said) , including how they look. And considering that the ten DONS are from all corners of the world it wouldn't surprise that info about how they look was published with all mafia families who took part in the auction (meaning all mafia in the world ) in order to deal with them ASAP before the order came to stop the hunt due to them being from meteor city. So the general population never got to know who they were but the mafia circle did hence why no normal citizen recognised chrollo in heaven's arena and why a random kakin mafia member was able to recognise them. That's at least how i see it. 3)i do agree that nen wasn't intended from chapter 1 (killua's assassination abilities) . about nen a lot of ordinary people KNOW OF nen but have no way to learn nen because it is either gated by the hunter association (which is by far the biggest group of nen users ) who would never teach it to a random person and random non hunter nen users who have 0 incentive to teach others nen because it only increases the competition and the number of people that could be trouble for you as a nen user , or there is also the occasional genius who just stumbles onto nen by themselves.it is not really strange that east gorteau had 1 nen user body guard because diego could have just hired the strongest person he could find (aka a nen user) just like how the princes are hiring now inthe current arc . and same for the shadow beasts. 4)This one actually seems like he forgot that the eyes were fake (considering the "daughter of the mafia" he was referring to was neon which is very likely). Or just that the father got his hands on some scarlet eyes in an attempt to please his daughter before he fully realised that her powers were gone . 5) there is a way how ikalgo couldn't have heard about it . Leol changed his name somewhere after he left the nest to build his own kingdom and before he met with cheetu , in that time whenever we saw him ikalgo was never with them or in contact with them until he was contacted by flutter later on to snipe killua , and leol's new name was never mentioned in that conversation either. And after that he just joined the group and would have no way to know the name. And with ikalgo being already set up there prior to killua coming it's easy to assume that he was around that area for a long time before killua came , and considering they were so far away from each other and couldn't telepathicly communicate it would make sense (the telepathy seems to have a range because many situations could have been resolved by telepathy but were never used so it has to have a limit). But i still personally think togashi just forgot this detail tbh.

For Nen being unknown, I can think of a few explanations of why it is known or unknown: 1. In this world, it is understood that many have some kind of magic or have paranormal abilities. People know about abilities, but not how they work. A highly talented athlete uses nen to augment their abilities, but without formal knowledge of how it works. 2. Formal Nen training is controlled by the Hunter Association. They've developed the principles of Nen to help the practice of Nen. 3. Other people can independently develop Nen through sheer dedication to an activity. They will instinctively use Nen, but might not be capable of using Gyo to see Nen. We can argue that kid Gon is so strong because he instinctively uses Nen to heighten his sense of smell and strength. An adult version of Gon who never became a hunter would have developed his nen to a high level, but might not be able to use formal techniques like Gyo or Ren. So, if we see people using Nen, they could either be hunters (but Togashi does not mention it) or have discovered Nen independently and might even have developed it to a semi-formal or formal level (ie: probably the Shadow Beasts). Think of Nen like real-life martial arts. Some people control a practice (say, Karate associations), but independent styles can be developed and some people might just be great fighters without formal training. Not many people have the determination, time and money to develop their martial arts skills to become a great combatant, so similarly, very few people in the HxH world develop Nen

It would be better to avoid suicide-bombing tactics or nuke a place filled with people, of course, but if you're forced to choose one, the former is the least terrible option. Plus, Netero's dream for decades was finding someone he could fight against using all his power, so he wouldn't let this chance go despite his low odds of winning. This plan allowed Netero to fight, minimized collateral damage, and ensured the mission would succeed regardless of Netero's victory or defeat. A "win-win" of sorts. As for why the rest of the team wasn't told about the Rose, we can only guess. Maybe it's exactly because this forced them to fight their hardest.

Wouldn't that be a hasty conclusion? Dropping Nen projectiles isn't a super unique technique, so if you don't know what Dragon Dive actually looks like, you wouldn't immediately think Zeno was the one responsible. Someone like Razor could probably do something similar (it wouldn't make much sense for him to be there, of course, I'm just saying there are many possibilities other than Zeno, and it's not like Killua to rush to conclusions).

Actually, I would say prototypes of nen appear in Togashi's previous works, such as Level E. The name is even stated in Yu Yu Hakusho but it is again in a more infantile form. It'd be stranger if he came up with such a detailed power system while writing the series and not already brainstormed it before. Also, some of these are just characters being stupid. Doesn't matter who they are, they don't know everything in their field. The Ants have only been alive a few weeks, so for him to forget Leol's name (and we didn't see the depth of their relationship) is hardly a stretch of the mind. Similarly, for anyone not knowing Phantom Troupe, Zoldycks, or Nen is simply because they really didn't know. Yeah, we meet lots of characters who can easily recognize them but that's still within their line of work. The Prince dude is just royalty, why would he need to know Nen if it doesn't concern his rule (until now)? Their father could have even kept it secret from them so there is no advantage in the succession ritual. Togashi's 'on a whim' writing is usually in the transition between storylines, everything else in between is usually cleaner although I'm sure there are better inconsistencies than these.

1. It's possible Killua heard stories of Dragon Dive, and assumed it fit into the same camp of Assassin techniques, such as when he can make his claw-hand, snake mode, and creates after images. 2. It's possible that the Troupe have a status of infamy among select criminal organisations, and not the general world, but this is a stretch. 3. You could argue that the Hunter Association don't have a monopoly over nen, but rather have the societal dominance of sharing nen. Character like Rabbot learned nen without having any knowledge of it, same with characters like Komugi. For the plot hole about how its supposedly secret, its possible the general population view events such as Heaven's Arena as magical fighting, and isn't magic, but rather a WWE-style fake wresting where the general assume its just fake. 4. Biggest one with no real explanation. It's possible that Kurapika associated the fake eyes that Neon had with the real eyes and considers the real eyes to be associated with Neon. He also probably just stole the other eyes, or maybe created a new source of income for the Lestrade family. 5. Ikalgo probably just forgot the name change, and maybe Leol had his old name for a longer duration that Ikalgo was exposed to, and changed to Leol and then had minimal interaction with Ikalgo.

When I first watched, it did make me wonder how Killua knew about Dragon Dive- but I reasoned it out this way- Killua probably saw Zeno use this technique without knowing how it works- non-nen users can see objects created by nen if In isn’t being used, so I assumed that he could see the arrows, but maybe just assumed it was some kind of magic, or a martial arts skill he would learn/understand as he got older. Killua must have pieced it together before this attack happened (that most or all of the techniques he watched his older family members use when he was a child had to be nen) so it wasn’t a surprise and didn’t show him reasoning it out in this moment.

Another explanation for Killua being familiar with dragon dive is that Zeno Zoldyck (grandfather) is using transformation based nen and as we all know, transformation nen transforms pure aura into other properties (gum, energy, fire, etc.). So when nen is transformed, it is then visible or within the realm of the physical sensations. So then when Dragon dive is performed, it would be possible to be seen with the naked eye. Hence Killua would be able to observe dragon dive without the use of nen.

I think Killua's plot-hole could be explained with a few circumstances 1. As he was groomed to becoming the newest heir, the Zoldycks found it most reasonable to have him wait to hone his skills before learning nen 2. As we know, before Killua learned what nen actually was, he came into contact with it many times. For instance, when he was paired up with Illumi for the final stage, we see Illumi use his malicious aura to manipulate and scare Killua. Killua didn't know what the mysterious aura was, hence likely assuming that it was one of Illumi's special assassin techniques. The same could have been said for Dragon Dive. Killua could see most nen abilities without using Gyo before he learned what nen was.

To give potential explanations to the “plot holes”: Killua likely had Dragon Dive explained to him but had no idea what NEn was and no one explained Nen to him As for Heavens Arena: the main reason why Nen “works” unlike other superpowers is because its naturally invisible to non nen users. And supernatural stuff has been widely acccepted in the HXH world (magical beasts exists). They even consider all of Hisoka’s abilities magic tricks The general public dont know about nen but know people with special powers exist in the world. And as shown with Killua, you can have super strength or certain obvious abilities that use know Nen or nor require Nen to achieve. (In fact, the claw technique was stated to be done by physical muscle manipulation like how Killua can dislocate his joints and reverse it in seconds. Its how he escaped MAchi;s thread when his hands were tied up) Hence why Nen is accepted and not seen as a big deal in Heaven’s Arena. Killua not knowing Nen can make sense with these explanations: Unlike Kalluto, Killua is a rebel. The last thing the family would want is a rebel learning NEn too early in his life and having the power to leave his family business Nen is about personality and the family likely wanted Killua to become more attuned to his assassin mentality first His father sent Killua to Heaven’s Arena at 6 years old, with the goal of reaching the 200 floor, meaning he expected Killua to be initiated but survive or at least, learn about the existence of NEn. But Killua himself admits he literally left and went back home after finally reaching the 200th floor. So he would not find out about Nen As for CAnary or a butler not telling him, the family likely ordered them to not tell Killua about nen The family wanted to mold Killua to the next heir. Again, dangerous to teach him about Nen when he is a rebel and wants to run away.

I would argue the reason why the Phantom Troupe are sometimes recognized and sometimes not is because of their status as residents of Meteor City. Essentially the rest of the world wants to forget that they exist, so whenever records of residents there surface they almost immediately get expunged. This is a big plot point of the Yorknew City arc, even, where once the mafia find out they're residents of Meteor City their bounties get immediately rescinded. They might be recognized by people who have strong ties to the underworld but definitely not by most people. Additionally, I don't think nen's status as a secret is a plot hole personally. Sure the Hunter Association *tries* to control who it's taught to, but there's definitely nothing saying they're an authority on it. The mafia and Meteor City, as examples, probably have their own private practitioners that can teach people if necessary. Kurapika even shows that if you completely cast aside ethics and you have the right skills, you can literally factory print nen users (one of the princes' abilities is similar). Your argument about the princes not knowing about nen being strange doesn't really hold water either- the family *does* know about it, it's just kept a secret from the princes until the succession war.
