Between 2010 and 2020, more than 70% of developed countries saw a decline in their fertility rates. In the United States, it’s estimated that we’ll have more deaths than births within 20 years. What’s going on? And is it time to worry?
Research suggests the biggest factor behind falling birthrates here in the U.S. is that people are choosing to get married later in life - and having fewer children as a result. Whether that’s a crisis depends on who you’re asking. Some observers think it’s just a matter of individual choice. Others, however, worry that people are having fewer children than they’d like because they’re squeezed by the high costs of things like housing and childcare.
What are the potential effects of this demographic shift? An aging population means fewer people in the workforce, potentially leading to lower levels of innovation. It also means fewer young people paying into programs like Social Security on which seniors rely. Are lower birthrates leading us towards a crisis? Or are we overreacting? Our new video explores the arguments.
