Despite the differences between the riddler here and his comic book counterpart, it’s not really him unless he’s shown to have a fragile ego while being prone to emotional breakdowns anytime he’s proven wrong. Paul dano nailed this perfectly in this scene.

So true I, like many people, was so used to how the villain with the plan had a calm personality and even if he fails he's not breaking down.. this reminded me that he's eventually a sick person first and foremost. So he would most likely react that way if proven wrong or failed

Sure this portrayal in particular is a bit different than what we're used to but I think the spirit/core of the Riddler's character is still very much intact. A man who may come off at first like a calculating, intelligent menace who's two steps ahead, but is revealed to be a pathetic, demented loser behind all the puzzles and theatrics once you peel back the question mark-christened curtain.

Anyone who thinks that Riddler is overacting here has never read a comic featuring The Riddler. Majority of Batman stories involving Riddler have Riddler thinking he's smarter than Batman only to always be thwarted, the idea that he isn't the smartest man in the room compared to Batman eats him up from the inside and that's exactly what this scene demonstrates.
@tonts5329
@tonts5329 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that was also how the Riddler was portrayed in the Arkham Games, he's always trying to be the intellectual superior to both Batman and the other criminals. You get to see some of that in Arkham City with his interview logs with Hugo Strange.

I think this was somewhat a subversion of that as it seems Riddler is smarter than Batman rn but that the Riddler was delusional about their dynamic. For those who believe that Riddler knows Batman's Identity. You have to take in both Bruce Wayne and his background. Bruce being batman would mean that Riddler was beaten by a "Rich Jackass" who had life handed to him on a golden platter. He "Can't" believe that Bruce Wayne is Batman. It would shatter what little mental stability he has.

"He's the only one we didnt get" + "we've been doing this together" = he believes they are partners working together on these murders. He believes they are "secret friends" so why would he send a bomb to kill his secret friend? He idolizes Batman until he calls Riddler a psycopath and the delusion snaps.

I think Riddler undersells himself when he says he isn't physical. I mean, he single-handedly eliminated several of Gotham's most powerful people. Sure, he might not have the muscles of Bane, but strength means nothing when the other guy is holding a weapon.

Not really, as he relied on the element of surprise and mostly hid in the background when he killed the mayor and Colson, as opposed to Batman, who physically defeated his henchmen and prevented them from killing the people forced away, which was Riddler’s end goal. So in a way, Batman managed to defeat the Riddler physically without ever touching him.

It is kind of funny to think of the random events that had to happen for Batman to move forward. The one cop that always gave Batman shit and called him a freak, was the one cop on duty at the crime scene, and was also the only person in the movie that knew what a "tucker" was used for. If it wasn't for Martinez, Batman would have had no clue where to go after this scene.

It's cause Bruce Wayne is born into wealth, he has difficulty understanding common people's tools. From the Riddler's deduction he thought Batman works for a utilities company or construction/engineer and fed up with the unfairness of the world like he is.

This iteration of riddler gave a good representation of how a mentally ill, underdeveloped person would be like. Riddler throwing a tantrum like a child is how anyone would act If they were abandoned in an orphanage, not knowing the love and warmth of a family. It's pretty disturbing, and this actor nailed it.

True, although I did not like this version of Batman, I understand how it would make a really good character development as Bruce Wayne. The movie definitely had a much different vibe than most Batman films. I guess I am just a little old fashioned and am more used to the traditional action packed superhero movies. Even coming back a year later, I love this movie and this scene in particular. The way the scene tips back and forth on who seems to have the upper hand is handled so well, and Dano's performance is just wildly good. Opening with Bats thinking his identity was discovered. Then learning that he actually had no clue and was promptly put down by Batman's condemnation and insults, which felt like Batman held all the cards again. Then Batman's realization that Riddler had something else planned that everybody missed.

The glasses were a genius way to characterize Edward here. The glasses are clear, symbolizing that everyone sees right through him - he's been invisible his whole life. The temple of the glasses are a solid color, which symbolizes Edward's uniqueness - his intellect, his personality, his past. Lastly, that large crack on the lens symbolizes Edward's fractured, broken psyche.

I noticed that when I rewatched the film a couple times as well. I think the best way to describe this Batman, Riddler, and overall feel of Gotham and possibilities would be: Raw. Everything isn’t “perfected” but it has a distinct style that leaves the door open for endless stories in this Batman world. Matt Reeves’s wisely started the story in the early days but imagine his Batman(Robert Pattinson) in his later years with the mobsters & lunatics fully realized… The Batman skyrocketed into being one of the best Batman content.
