That is very true. Their music did change tremendously during their career and in a relatively short time. Their last few albums changed music as we know it according to most music historians. Also, if you ask many of the musicians that have come since the Beatles who some of their greatest influences were the Beatles are way up there.

The Beatles scored 20 number 1 Hits in the USA alone. Around the world they had even more. This was a time without social media and home computers. 75million people tuned into the Ed Sullivan show to watch them back in 1964. New York City Police reported not one call came in help during the entire show that night. Their hits spanned from 1962 to 1970. They re entered the charts again in 1976 with the re release of Got to get you into my life. In 1994 The scored 2 more top ten hits in the USA with Real Love and Free as a Bird. The Anthology Albums during that period went to number 1. As solo artists each Beatles scored numerous number 1 hits and many many top ten hits. Truly remarkable feat for four young lads from Liverpool England.

Well, "Get Back" is a different 45-record (b/w "Don't Let Me Down"). What is heard here, anyway, is the album version, but the flip side of the "Let It Be" '45' is the Beatles' 'humor piece', "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" - almost the entire lyrics are that phrase, or parts of it, repeated over and over, with different styles for different sections of the song.

66 year old white woman here...grew up around country music, moved on to classic rock and love love love Motown. So heard it all and found many types of music to love. How? Mainly radio. I think people forget how isolating today’s delivery of music can be. I tell my phone/computer what I want to hear and unless I change that message that’s all it delivers to me. This is why I like to listen to these reaction. It brings me joy to see people discover the music of my youth. Glorious. I’m seeing the music I love through new eyes! It’s also how discovered Chris Stapleton. We all learn from each other. And it gets me through these trying times. Consider yourself hugged.

To understand the excellence, majesty and exceptionality of BEATLES and the transcendence of their musical work and influence on the culture, I leave two data that were milestones: November/December 1963 on UK Charts his two singles #1 and #2 "I want to hold your hand" "She She loves you" at the same time as their first two albums #1 and #2 "With the Beatles" "Please, please me" (the latter spent 30 weeks at #1) April 4, 1964 on Billboard U.S. just two months after BEATLES 'first visit to the U.S.A. and their presentation on Ed Sullivan show, the entire Top 5 was from BEATLES: "Can’t Buy Me Love" "Twist and Shout" "Ella She Loves You" "I Want to Hold Your Hand" "Please Please Me" and after separating, their four members had successful careers as soloists or with their new groups. There will be a lot of very good groups and bands, and I like a lot, like ABBA, Bee Gees, E.L.O., Queen, but the First, the Greatest and the Most Important were and will be THE BEATLES

I think the very hardest thing for you to judge, given your age, is how much of what they were doing then had never been done before. I've been hearing the Beatles since I was about four. I remember standing in the lobby of a school where my father taught, spinning in lazy circles and letting my skirt swirl out, listening to a Beatles song--I think it was "Yesterday." If you listen to the entire Beatles works, you can hear them pick up where Buddy Holly, Elvis, and the Righteous Brothers had settled--and from that point completely invent a much, much larger genre of music starting from nearly a bare-earth foundation. They explored so many possibilities, and invented so many new ways of sounding. They opened the door to a MUCH larger range of themes and topics, helping move pop music out of love stories and folk-music protest songs into fascinating narratives about ordinary people. Any idea could become a song. And any structure that worked, was fine with them. By the time they were done, they'd taken everyone else to church. When you listen, remember--if their music ever sounds even remotely familiar or underdeveloped to you, there's a good chance that it's because they were inventing it. The Beatles are to pop music what Shakespeare is to all of English literature. If Shakespeare ever sounds cliched, it's not because he was lazy or lacking imagination. It's because he did it first--and no one's done it better in spite of thousands of attempts in the centuries since. The Beatles did nearly everything--and the rest of the world has been playing catch-up ever after.

It's hard for people of our generation (I was born in 1959) to grasp that the Beatles aren't universally known, simply because they were HUGE in the 60's and 70's, with fans worldwide. To put it in perspective, imagine yourself getting to be 50 or 60 years old, and realizing people in their 20's are unfamiliar with Michael Jackson! So, seeing you "discover" the Beatles (and Queen, and Stevie Ray Vaughan) really makes me smile .

Not only are they a great band but just as importantly: they changed the music in the early 1960s and they progressed and were in the fore front of the counter culture. They also influenced all groups that came after them. They influenced fashion.. They will be remembered for eternity like Mozart and Beethoven while some of their contempories will be a footnote in music history. Just listen to 1960-62 music and then listen to early Beatles and you'll see the difference.

You've barely scratched the surface here, they have such a vast and varied catalog. As others have suggested you should start from their early songs and see how they evolved over their relatively short time together. With each album they grew musically and due to their fame and genius they had the luxury and ability to experiment and innovate. Also be aware of the year a song was recorded to understand it within the context of the time and the culture. It's hard to convey the reaction to their music that they evoked in their fans worldwide. It was a unique phenomena. I'm sure your fans will guide you on the journey.

I’m amused that someone would expect a young person, particularly a young black person, to be familiar with music over fifty years old, however popular it has been. For example, when I was twenty-five, in 1979, I was not very familiar with pop music of the twenties, for sure. Give the young people a break.

"Pop" music did not become a genre until at least the mid-1950s. Popular music of the twenties (or from any other era) was largely jazz-based, and certainly NEVER had the impact on the world, and the music business, or the influence on music in the future, like The Beatles did. Nobody should be expected to be familiar with popular music from the twenties. EVERYBODY should become familiar with the music of The Beatles.

Hey Bro, good stuff. Something you said made me think about my own influences. I'm an old dude. My parents were from the Lawrence Welk generation. All of my influence was from my generic brother who is 9 years older than I am. He introduced me to The Beatles way early in my life. Like you, I was also a drummer from way early one in grade school. Did High School band, was even in a Drum Corp for a while. Thanks for all of your reactions. I like it when you cover this old stuff.

I would like to suggest that you look into some of their live performances. They have been all over TV and have many concerts that were recorded. Coming from a musical family I bet you would appreciate how professional they are about working the mics. You should see that. Im a strings musician and all I work on is Beatles stuff. They recorded and released some 214 songs. I think you should do them all. You deserve to hear every Beatles song at least once.

Few things.....when coming to something like the Beatles.....its daunting.....elsewhere in the comments it was recommended to start at the beginning.....I think I agree.....I think of three periods.....early, middle ,late......early has the spark of genius as Lennon-McCartney began to write their own material(Beatles did a lot of covers early, of course as do most bands...)....in fact, their big initial hit in the US "I want to hold your hand" is hardly a favorite of mine, but "I saw her standing there" and "A Hard days night" are a couple great ones from that period.....and representative.....awesome harmonies...... Then the middle period.....I always think of the two albums....Rubber Soul and Revolver....classics.....from Rubber Soul..."Drive my car" and Norwegian Wood"...... and from Revolver "Taxman--a George Harrison song" and "She said she said" and "Got to get you into my life"... Then the later period which is huge...and begins with "Sgt Pepper" album.....and onwards!

Close your eyes and really listen, take in the majesty of their voices, harmonies, instrumentals, and orchestrations.

The song BLACKBIRD by The Beatles was written by Paul McCartney, the singer on Let It Be. During the civil rights protests in our country, in the 60s, Paul saw the news about young black women being mistreated during school integration, I think, not sure but you can look it up. In England, at that time, girls were called birds, like our slang called girls chicks! He wrote BLACKBIRD thinking if they ever heard it that they would be encouraged and know someone was on their side. Side note: Some time in one of Paul’s concerts, maybe, 2018, these same women showed up! Now older, of course, but there is a photo of them with Paul. A full circle moment for him, and them, I imagine! England did and does not segregate so this was quite disturbing for them when they saw it going on. In fact, in Georgia, I think, the promoters wanted to have a concert for blacks and one for whites but the BEATLES told them “Our music is for everyone and we don’t believe in segragation so if you do that we will not play, at all, no concert!” So it was the first concert, ever in a stadium and first event integrated, anywhere in the U S! Love these guys.

This is the album track. This was probably one of the earliest ballads to have heavy guitar in it. Later followed by Goodbye to Love by the Carpenters and Guitar Man by Bread.

Just for grins, you should go to the video: The Late, Late, Late Show's Carpool Karaoke with Paul McCartney. It is very sweet and really funny. Paul takes James Coburn through his hometown. They go to the place where he and John Lennon got their haircuts; where he lived as a teenager (the house is still there) and he and John used to create their early songs in the "loo." Also he tells James about having a dream about his dead mother telling him to Let it Be. The end of the visit is their surprising some people in a pub. You've got to watch it!!!!

The “Let It Be” lp was produced by the late Phil Spector. It was their final release, but not their last recording. That was “Abbey Road”, produced by the great George Martin, who produced all their other material. The Beatles didn’t release “Let It Be” prior to “Abbey Road” because they weren’t at all satisfied with the final product. Obviously, it was eventually released. There are alternate versions of that album’s material. For example, the strings in “The Long and Winding Road” were later stripped from the Phil Spector version and song remixed.

Paul was that Phil Spector did that to their album. It was without their permission and Paul wrote some sort of contact or something explicitly stating that permission was to be given for any changes were made. Fortunately we now have the Let it be, naked CD.

Beatles one of those great groups that kept growing and changing and exploring as the time went by. Never stagnated. From 'I want to hold your hand" to 'Within without you" Then, it was time for them to go their individual paths, and each one was fantastic in his own way. They were all dynamic musicians..all about growing and exploring their art and live of expression. If you take that yellow submarine trip down into their music on your own time or here, I don't think you will regret it. PS love the Cameo album in your background, have asked a lot of reactors to do them, but have only seen one do one song. Love and peace

You should listen to the version on "Let It Be Naked." It's what the song was originally supposed to sound like -- just the four of them (plus Billy Preston on organ) playing together. No overdubs, just them. But then Phil Spector got ahold of it, and added all sorts of instruments and children's choirs. This version is good, mind you, but the Naked version is magic.

Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) was the other perfect pocket drummer of the era (the other being Charlie Watts of the Stones). Never did anything that wasn't perfect for what the song needs. He was reluctant to play the simple but bangin' short solo in Carry That Weight -- a brief solo that pretty much everybody loves!
