The thing I loved most about handheld consoles was that everybody had their own. Home consoles are typically a one per family kind of thing, but owning a DS, while my brothers had their own and my friends and their siblings had their own just made it all the more fun when we came together for Pokémon Battles or Mario Kart races. Individuality and camaraderie in one console.

The nintendo DS and 3DS were the height of gaming for me. Playing with my brother these incredible games in the palm of our hands. Being able to use both screens to play games in ways that we never thought possible. We even got my little sister to start playing games with us, and she never even touched video games before. as someone who grew up with a gba sp and loved handheld gaming ever since, this video speaks to me. the most immersive games I have ever played, have always been on handhelds. My little brother and I would have matching systems, and would always link up on gba or ds, be it kingdom hearts chain of memories, the pokemon series, or N+. My extended family would start associating the two of us with the handhelds, my uncle Jimmy calling it the knucklehead box. Good times.

GBA and DS gaming was my childhood. My introduction to Pokemon started here in Hoenn, stuck to it since then despite the decline and hopeful it will get better again (Legends Arceus gives me hope it will). TWEWY changed my perspective in the importance of socializing as a whole. Loved Megaman Battle Network, so hyped for the port! Loved a lot of games that came out at this time and so happy a lot of it has been ported to today’s consoles and steam now.

I recently modded my sp with a new IPS screen and shell. Then I played Golden Sun and The Lost Age back-to-back over the past couple of months. Doing this has totally rekindled my love for handhelds. I play on my lunch break and when I get in bed. It's so nice to have these little 20-30 min play sessions.

Was it easy? I was thinking about doing an IPS screen on the original GBA as my first real modding project. (I've fixed all types of stuff and am comfortable with electronics general, but I've never soldered before so that's always been the biggest obstacle for me.) (Also, screw new phones and laptops and stuff where you need a damn heatgun and pry tool just to open them up)
@bclikesyou
@bclikesyou Жыл бұрын
@@infasis I can only speak to modding a GBA SP. I wouldn't call it easy as I had no prior experience with soldering but I learned along the way! Most of the modding is just taking apart the SP carefully. The one solder job was if you want 6 levels of brightness in which case you have to solder 1 wire. I bought all my parts from Retro Modding and Handheld Legend. All in all highly recommended. It's a lot of fun and the new screens really make you appreciate how beautiful some of those old games are.
@infasis
@infasis Жыл бұрын
@@bclikesyou Nice, thank you. I think I might just buy a soldering kit and start practicing. A few mods I'm interested in it's optional like that, but I'm kinda picky and learning really is long overdue for me.

This is super similar to my experience. This was the golden age. Gba and ds was like the perfect way to just have access to incredible games at any time. Quality games made for the systems. Instead of doing homogenous 3d graphics we had memorable and future proof art styles that look better than most early 3d games and have more personality than most modern games. Pokemon games specifically had so much more character before 3d.

As someone who owned both a DS and a PSP in my youth I always preferred my Nintendo DS. Any game I'd play on the PSP I'd rather play on the PS3 because a lot of PSP games had short storys and the gameplay was lesser than on PS3 overall. The Nintendo DS games I played took advantage of dual screens and were genuinely fun when you wanted to play something on the go or while you're watching tv. I made the mistake of selling my Nintendo DS back in the day but I now own a new Nintendo 3DS XL along with all the older games I had back in the day for the DS since the 3DS also plays DS games. The DS/3DS library is massive as a whole and you had a lot more options to choose from than the PSP or the Vita which is one of the reasons it was more popular. Nintendo fully supported their DS lineup whereas Sony kind of half supported their PSP lineup before killing it off. I own a Nintendo Switch and a 3DS and while I do love the Switch, I love my 3DS just a bit more because it's truly a handheld gaming device that's still very fun to this day.

My favorite place to play my ds was in the car on a long road trip to see family. I get carsick sometimes, but hiding under a blanket and plugging my earbuds in while playing the newest game my dad got for me was such a vital part of my childhood. I recently got to relive that for the first time in years when I got Hollow Knight for the switch the same day we were driving 3 hours to see family. Starting that game in the car was such a magically nostalgic feeling that it nearly brought me to tears. YOOO THANK YOU for mentioning how awesome it was that DS games utilized every unique aspect of the console. Phantom Hourglass in particular utilized everything. Controlled well with the stylus, utilized it's two screens with the map (or to show off how tall one of the bosses is), gave tons of opportunities to control things or just doodle with the stylus. Hell, there's even an enemy you can kill by yelling at the mic. It's nuts.

When you mentioned the PSP it brought me an another level of nostalgia. My cousin had one and it was the most fun. Being Brazilian, consoles were always really expensive, but my cousin, who had a better condition than me, had one. I remember seeing him play and waiting for my turn, or asking him directions because I got lost on GTA, or playing ninja turtles. Good times. Till this day, I've never had a console (other than a broken ps3 that my other rich cousin gave me), but talking about it still gives me the nostalgia sadness. PS: I'm the older cousin, and having to rely on my little rich cousins to play always was a little sad, but I always had fun! Shoutout from Brasil!

This makes me want to pull out the 3ds and get into some pokemon heartgold and ace attorney. A great story about handheld gaming that I have is when I spoke to my childhood best friend for the first time since 2014. When I got the ds lite with pokemon Dimond I played the fuck out of that game with my best friend, we started the games together and raced to the end- and when we finished we battled eachother to see who was the true champion. We felt like we were rivials in the anime or some shit. We of course played many games on the ds, but that first game I ever got that was mine alone (I had a twin brother) will live on as one of my favorites because of my friend. Me and him parted ways when I moved to another state in 2012 and we fell out of touch when we both started highschool- and communication got even more limited when he joined the Navy out of highschool. When I did get the chance to call him it was like a day hadn't passed, after catching up we talked about video games like we were 10 again- and then it happened. Dude told me that when he goes on deployment he brings his original ds lite and his copy of pearl and always names his rival after me every time, even after all these years. I started crying man, every pokemon game I've played I've named my rival after him too- as he'd always be the one I'd strive to beat. The ds lite and it's catologe will always be a core memory for me. Great video as always man, keep up the great work!

It's wild how such a small thing like naming an NPC after a true friend can mean so much, but life is interesting like that.

One of my favourite memories with Gameboy growing up was constantly swapping out all the batteries from devices around the house to power my little handheld obsession. Pretty sure my parents hated the gameboy for it's ever lasting hunger for batteries but they never took it away from me so that was a win. Also my dude, when is the patreon coming? I keep chucking money at my screen but it aint making that pitstop!

I killed my first handheld(the original GBA) one summer with battery acid from my horde of batteries I held in a bag when I was ten. Young me was stupid. I still have the console but I definitely replaced it with an sp on my twelfth birthday.(and a copy of pokemon mystery dungeon red rescue team.)

Felt so bad for my parents they had 4 kids, each with our own Gameboy (original). Painful amount of batteries! The long car ride thing would be fine until it got dark and you couldn't see the screen because no back lighting 🤣😂

That story reminded me of a classmate as a kid who’s mother who knew nothing about video games decided to clean his Nintendo DSI. And all his cartridges. In the sink. With soap and water. Yeah he was out of a console for about 3 years until he got a 3DS because his mother thought she was being nice to him by washing his “toys”

I still swear that the SP was the best of the handheld consoles. Easy enough to hide in class, long enough battery, and ergonomic enough to fit comfortably in hand. Wish the technology would have just advanced with it instead of going the massive tablet-lite style everything has gone with now.

The Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's Fury are pure childhood nostalgia. Absolute classics that I'm happy to see mentioned. Spending too much time in them just fully levelling characters, exploring and fully completing side content like golden capsules in LoG2 and the exhibits in Buu's Fury. The music is also easily one of my favorite sets of GBA OST's and constantly pop back into my head. Still my favorite DBZ games hands down. Think I may give them another play now Spot on about that horrible dino egg mission though, that thing still haunts my nightmares lmao

Handhelds were also my bread and butter to my childhood. I was never allowed to own a console until I was in ......something like 7th or 8th grade. But, regardless of owning a dedicated console I always stayed with my GBA SP, and later 3DS Lite. Like you I would sit all cozy in my bed hiding the glow from my dad while killing it in Legacy of Goku II. I think I completed that game 100% while on a car ride to Myrtle Beach SC. Another great title that the GBA had was Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride. Holy crap that was such a great freaking game. But, damn, another banger of a video man. I always get super nostalgic hearing the tracks you play in the background while talking about that sweet mid to late 90s - 2000s goodness. Can't wait for the next one mate!

I remember when the PSP came out; man, the DS dominated it. Most people I know didn't play PSP games, they used it as am emulation machine. If you wanted to play games you played the DS. lol That said, I've played the TWEWY on the DS and fell in love. It's so unique and so creative that I honestly don't think it works outside it. I could go on, but I'll refrain. The phat DS, DS Lite, SP... I had the Color for Pokemon, 3DS for Ace Attorney, but the DS & SP were the love of my life. I still have mine and I'll never give them up.

So I had both the ds/3ds and psp and ps vita. I liked both for different reasons, mostly for the specific ips they carried. TBH like SMT and Zelda. At one point I was using my psp and then ps vita a lot more cause of the other features they had. Like watching movies/shows on it! I have found memories of watching lupin the 3rd a woman named fujiko on my psp. I sold all my handhelds over the years and I miss them. BUT I do have a Switch now so playing it off the dock is great to get those handheld vibes.

Dude a similar thing happened to me as a kid trying to solve that phantom hourglass map puzzle. I remember being super stumped one morning after literally trying everything to solve the puzzle. My family decides to stop at a McDonald’s for breakfast so I close my ds while I eat my food. To my surprise when I opened the game back up the puzzle had been solved! I couldn’t believe how simple yet creative the solution ended up being. I always think back to that moment and the final boss fight in earthbound when I think about unique/special moments in video games. I remember my parents getting me my own red Gameboy Advance with Mario Kart Super Circuit and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, and hearing that jingle is like looking up to the bright blue sky and watch the clouds roll by quick followed by the Aurora borealis. Mario Bros, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Pokemon, Cartoon Network and even tie-in games like Rugrats Go Wild. That era with the GameCube was a great time before getting a DS. The DS and Wii era was just as great... but I'm getting ahead of myself xD

Being the youngest sibling literally gave us all a similar childhood experience. My main consoles were Handheld Consoles while my older brothers got to play the N64,PS2,Gamecube,etc. while I get to watch them, and sometimes they'll let me play when they were done. Or i'd sneak a session of playing the home consoles while they were busy lol So handheld consoles were really all I could get my hands on fulltime.

I played a lot of Pokémon with my friends. Recently I've been playing through the Yo-Kai Watch franchise with my friend, and honestly they're really good games!
