The thing I loved most about handheld consoles was that everybody had their own. Home consoles are typically a one per family kind of thing, but owning a DS, while my brothers had their own and my friends and their siblings had their own just made it all the more fun when we came together for Pokémon Battles or Mario Kart races. Individuality and camaraderie in one console.

It also does native gba as well and gameboy and color are emulated but feel native and don't have jitter like when you emulate them on phone and pc. But you need it modded. Without modding you can't get all of that and you'll pay for every game. Modding you get everything basically free so buy one modded or mod it yourself which isn't hard and is fast and is cheaper than buying one already modded. Put it this way. There's a reason at every garage sale and flea market handhelds are the first consoles sold fast or harder to get. Everyone rather have something you can take everywhere and all of them are easy to get free native games for whether thru flash carts or gb and gba and ds/ds lite or through software with the dsi, 3ds, psp and ps vita. Honestly the last 4 are the best in this aspect cause the older ones you need flashcarts which still cost decent money especially the gba one.

Was it easy? I was thinking about doing an IPS screen on the original GBA as my first real modding project. (I've fixed all types of stuff and am comfortable with electronics general, but I've never soldered before so that's always been the biggest obstacle for me.) (Also, screw new phones and laptops and stuff where you need a damn heatgun and pry tool just to open them up)
@bclikesyou2 жыл бұрын
@@infasis I can only speak to modding a GBA SP. I wouldn't call it easy as I had no prior experience with soldering but I learned along the way! Most of the modding is just taking apart the SP carefully. The one solder job was if you want 6 levels of brightness in which case you have to solder 1 wire. I bought all my parts from Retro Modding and Handheld Legend. All in all highly recommended. It's a lot of fun and the new screens really make you appreciate how beautiful some of those old games are.

It feels so refreshing discovering someone on KZbin who just creates positive and passionate content about whatever the heck they feel like. Your content just makes me feel so happy, but also a little teary eyed in some of the videos. I'm so glad to have stopped by, Thanks man.

The first time I played Legacy of Goku I gave up after a few hours.. I came back to it randomly after 3 years of aging and my god was it hard but it was honestly so underrated.

Handhelds have always been my go-to choice of console, which is why the Switch and Steam Deck feel soooooo good to me. I think part of the appeal was that, because they're so portable, I felt like I could get more privacy when gaming. Having space instead of sharing the TV with siblings, having space instead of sharing the TV with roommates, etc. There is something so nice about curling up in a bed or couch with just you and the game

That story reminded me of a classmate as a kid who’s mother who knew nothing about video games decided to clean his Nintendo DSI. And all his cartridges. In the sink. With soap and water. Yeah he was out of a console for about 3 years until he got a 3DS because his mother thought she was being nice to him by washing his “toys”

Pokémon blue rescue team made me cry, Mario superstar saga had me amazed, castlevania aria of sorrow had my heart pounding, and minishcap is still to this day my favorite game to 100%. I remember being in bed hiding under the covers from my mom to tell me to sleep just searching every nook n cranny as I’m squinting to see my dark screen in my dim white Christmas lights. And lord knows my entire childhood was based around that shiny zubat I got in Pokémon crystal that I to this day hood funerals for when my cartridge battery died n no longer let me save.. rip my green buddy

I am a Game Boy Color era kid who had each subsequent system over the years, and I will absolutely stan the 3DS. It was around for like, 10 years, and really got a ton of great games. It was an absolute sleeper hit; no one really cared when it came out but over the years its catalogue blew UP. And on top of that it could play DS games.

When you mentioned the PSP it brought me an another level of nostalgia. My cousin had one and it was the most fun. Being Brazilian, consoles were always really expensive, but my cousin, who had a better condition than me, had one. I remember seeing him play and waiting for my turn, or asking him directions because I got lost on GTA, or playing ninja turtles. Good times. Till this day, I've never had a console (other than a broken ps3 that my other rich cousin gave me), but talking about it still gives me the nostalgia sadness. PS: I'm the older cousin, and having to rely on my little rich cousins to play always was a little sad, but I always had fun! Shoutout from Brasil!

It's really crazy how poor people in the u.s how we struggled when young but it doesn't compare to south American countries or African where the conditions are much harder and not being able to get a console. Like I grew up in the projects of new York city and seen it all roaches that can fly, rats and just utter filth pee and poop everywhere but down there you have so many crazy big animals and insects all over with so much harder circumstances I really give it to you guys. I also didn't have systems so easily but as a I got older I got lucky with people giving me them and what not. But yeah now I have a new 3ds and psp that I got like two months ago and that takes care of alot since they are easily moddable.

One of my favourite memories with Gameboy growing up was constantly swapping out all the batteries from devices around the house to power my little handheld obsession. Pretty sure my parents hated the gameboy for it's ever lasting hunger for batteries but they never took it away from me so that was a win. Also my dude, when is the patreon coming? I keep chucking money at my screen but it aint making that pitstop!

I killed my first handheld(the original GBA) one summer with battery acid from my horde of batteries I held in a bag when I was ten. Young me was stupid. I still have the console but I definitely replaced it with an sp on my twelfth birthday.(and a copy of pokemon mystery dungeon red rescue team.)

Felt so bad for my parents they had 4 kids, each with our own Gameboy (original). Painful amount of batteries! The long car ride thing would be fine until it got dark and you couldn't see the screen because no back lighting 🤣😂

The Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's Fury are pure childhood nostalgia. Absolute classics that I'm happy to see mentioned. Spending too much time in them just fully levelling characters, exploring and fully completing side content like golden capsules in LoG2 and the exhibits in Buu's Fury. The music is also easily one of my favorite sets of GBA OST's and constantly pop back into my head. Still my favorite DBZ games hands down. Think I may give them another play now Spot on about that horrible dino egg mission though, that thing still haunts my nightmares lmao

I remember when the PSP came out; man, the DS dominated it. Most people I know didn't play PSP games, they used it as am emulation machine. If you wanted to play games you played the DS. lol That said, I've played the TWEWY on the DS and fell in love. It's so unique and so creative that I honestly don't think it works outside it. I could go on, but I'll refrain. The phat DS, DS Lite, SP... I had the Color for Pokemon, 3DS for Ace Attorney, but the DS & SP were the love of my life. I still have mine and I'll never give them up.

The GBA was literally a SNES on the go and that’s why I love it, my favorite cartridge system. I wish the DS and 3DS treated itself more like N64 and GameCube cause they really were but they always held back. You know damn well Wind Waker could’ve been on 3DS…

As someone who owned both a DS and a PSP in my youth I always preferred my Nintendo DS. Any game I'd play on the PSP I'd rather play on the PS3 because a lot of PSP games had short storys and the gameplay was lesser than on PS3 overall. The Nintendo DS games I played took advantage of dual screens and were genuinely fun when you wanted to play something on the go or while you're watching tv. I made the mistake of selling my Nintendo DS back in the day but I now own a new Nintendo 3DS XL along with all the older games I had back in the day for the DS since the 3DS also plays DS games. The DS/3DS library is massive as a whole and you had a lot more options to choose from than the PSP or the Vita which is one of the reasons it was more popular. Nintendo fully supported their DS lineup whereas Sony kind of half supported their PSP lineup before killing it off. I own a Nintendo Switch and a 3DS and while I do love the Switch, I love my 3DS just a bit more because it's truly a handheld gaming device that's still very fun to this day.

Being the youngest sibling literally gave us all a similar childhood experience. My main consoles were Handheld Consoles while my older brothers got to play the N64,PS2,Gamecube,etc. while I get to watch them, and sometimes they'll let me play when they were done. Or i'd sneak a session of playing the home consoles while they were busy lol So handheld consoles were really all I could get my hands on fulltime.
@meta_knight2 жыл бұрын
It’s a less talked about aspect of the advantages of handhelds, but they really are fantastic options for people like me with health issues. Sure gaming on a console is seen as a lazy activity, however when you struggle to walk sometimes getting to the couch can be too much. I remember in 2020, before the pandemic even happened, I got majorly sick and none of the doctors I visited knew why. I was miserable, I couldn’t sit or stand upright without passing out or getting dizzy, and was majorly confined to sitting and laying in bed. In between visiting specialists and wasting away on a mattress, my dad one day was like “What color Nintendo switch do you want?” I picked out the yellow lite because the battery life was better than the regular version and I was too sick to take advantage of the tv docking anyways. When that thing came in the mail it was the happiest I had been in months. Sure I was still feeling terrible but I could now enjoy video games in bed, that improved my quality of life so much.

I’m so glad I found your channel man. Literally every video you’ve made was tailored for me to click it. Also haven’t been subbed for long (6K subs ish) and I was wondering why you didn’t have NEARLY as much subs as I thought you’d have when I clicked the sub button, and you’re popping off haha. Just found this channel and this is such a great video! I always ended up with handheld consoles bc my family couldn't afford a console and this video brought me back to the days with my ds and me and my friends using pictochat or playing Mario kart on the bus. I even bought a 3ds this year bc handheld games to me are really fun and underrated. Really glad you also mentioned minish cap bc that's my favorite 2d zelda alongside a link between worlds. All the Nintendo handhelds have some of the best memories as a kid.

minish cap IS the most underrated zelda game. it's got charm out the wazoo and it was tight pacing. loved the central gimmick of becoming tiny and going all levelord on the world. take care of your AGS-101s, not many of them out there!

I still swear that the SP was the best of the handheld consoles. Easy enough to hide in class, long enough battery, and ergonomic enough to fit comfortably in hand. Wish the technology would have just advanced with it instead of going the massive tablet-lite style everything has gone with now.

So I had both the ds/3ds and psp and ps vita. I liked both for different reasons, mostly for the specific ips they carried. TBH like SMT and Zelda. At one point I was using my psp and then ps vita a lot more cause of the other features they had. Like watching movies/shows on it! I have found memories of watching lupin the 3rd a woman named fujiko on my psp. I sold all my handhelds over the years and I miss them. BUT I do have a Switch now so playing it off the dock is great to get those handheld vibes.

That intro bought back so many memories brother. I remember my parents getting me my own red Gameboy Advance with Mario Kart Super Circuit and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, and hearing that jingle is like looking up to the bright blue sky and watch the clouds roll by quick followed by the Aurora borealis. Mario Bros, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Pokemon, Cartoon Network and even tie-in games like Rugrats Go Wild. That era with the GameCube was a great time before getting a DS. The DS and Wii era was just as great... but I'm getting ahead of myself xD
