Grizzl-E is the best dumb charger and worst smart charger on the market. I wish I had just bought the dumb version, since I have mine permanently disconnected from WiFi. On WiFi it crashes and stops charging. As a dumb charger is it nearly bulletproof.
@motofan169 сағат бұрын
26:30 Yes there are losses in the charging system that are usually higher with higher charging power. But there are also other systems that are on during charging which consume power as well. The quicker you charge, the shorter those systems have to stay on. Bjorn Nyland did some tests a couple of years back and found out that the higher the AC charging current you set, the lower overall losses there are. Obviously this can vary from car model to model.

I’m curious on your thoughts of non traditional home charging options (no garage). We have a small backyard with off street parking and I’d like to run electrical to a post to charge an EV we buy down the road. Would love a video on maybe less traditional charging options or examples you’ve seen in your experience. Love the channel!
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney19 сағат бұрын
That's not that uncommon. I've seen people to that quite a few times. Not always in the backyard, could be on the side of the house or at the end of the driveway. You just need to trench for the wire and hang the unit on a post - there are plenty of them available.
@charliesullivan430414 сағат бұрын
You can absolutely do that. Electrical code specifies some options I'm using conduit or direct bury wire, at different depths. Sometimes it makes sense for you to dig the trench and the electrician puts in the conduit and wire. The post could be something purpose made or a simple wood 4x4. It could also be a post that's made to be a fence post.

I'd like to see units that can load-share separate physical units across a single circuit, with the communication all being over-the-wire. I've had issues with load-sharing EVSEs becoming very flaky if internet connection goes down. Load-sharing should be 100% local, and could easily use PLC for communication. I have two EVSEs because they need to be on opposite sides of the garage, I can't just put one in the middle.

Perfect timing on this review, Tom. And, thank you for info. I ordered a J1172 version of this charger last week and it is in transit to me in the Rocky Mountain west. I am looking forward to using this on my Silverado RST and my Taycan, both of which can accommodate the 19.2kW AC charging speeds. I appreciate what you do, and the content on this video is super timely for me, but it does feel a little disingenuous that you are pushing this NACs version since it seems like United provided you with this version at no cost and asked that you continually make references that the NACs version of the charger being cheaper than the J1772 version so they can clear out inventory. With Cybertruck sales tanking, it seems United made a few too many of the NACs version of the 80amp charger and are leveraging the sales price, and you, to clear inventory. I have no issues with what you are doing, but you should be upfront about it because how is someone who owns a Taycan or a Silverado EV going to use this particular 80amp NACs charger unless they have a TeslaTap converter rated for 80amps? Once again, I appreciate what you do and hope you continue to be the solid, independent reviewer you have been over the years.

About how long to charge your Taycan (93kWh battery?) from 10-80% at 19.2kW?
@paulf958511 сағат бұрын
@@gregeast147 I don't have the exact timing on that yet since the 80amp charger I ordered does not arrive until Friday. Then the electrician shows up next Tuesday to install. I will charge the Taycan first, and then I want to charge the Silverado RST over night. the truck is the primary reason I am upgrading my home charger - the 40amp Chargpoint Flex charger I have is not fast enough go from 10% to 80% over night due to the battery being so large on the truck.
@gregeast14710 сағат бұрын
@ Thx for the reply. I'm looking at CPO Taycans but have only seen a few with the 19.2kW option. Most days the faster charging wouldn't really matter but I think it would be great to have in certain situations. It might mean we could get by with one charger for our Rivian and the Taycan.
@paulf958510 сағат бұрын
@@gregeast147 I had a R1T before trading it in for the Silverado RST. The ChargePoint worked fine since I was the only one driving each of the two cars. The situation now is the Silverado does not fit in my garage, so I need to charge overnight so I don't block the alley with the truck during the day. With the 210kWh battery in the Silverado I need the faster charger to get up to 80% by the morning if plug in a 10% or 20%.

Now I'm curious: how many EVs currently available (or coming out this year) can take advantage of 80A/19kW charging? It seems like it would be a small list, but I could be mistaken.
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney21 сағат бұрын
Yeah, it's a small list indeed. Lucid's two vehicles and GM's (it's offered on most of the lineup as an option), off the top of my head. There are older Teslas that can accept it and 2022 and 2023 Lightning, but it's not a huge list. But as I mentioned in the review, the price is so good that it costs less than some 48-amp units of comparable quality/utility. Why not get a higher powered unit because you may be able to use it in the future.

To confirm….the 2024 Ford Lightnings can’t charge at 80 amps? Ford is not clear and in many of there sites shows “for your lightning use the Ford Pro Charger to uniquely achieve 80 amps”. Seems they are purposely not being very clear. What’s your take?
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney14 сағат бұрын
@@ryanbeck7875 Yes, that's correct. Pro customers can order one with the 80-amp onboard charger, but retail customers can only get the 48-amp onboard charger. Where does it say that? You won’t know that until the price is adjusted when tariffs become applicable, actually. The charger is made in Canada, but is built using parts that could be coming from the USA or China, and those will have tariffs as well so the final 25% will apply to these cumulative costs. Americans need to learn how tariffs work! As a citizen of 🇨🇦, I will certainly buy a Grizzl-E way, way before I consider any US brand.

Are there any EV chargers that allow one to adjust the available current dynamically via app or API? For example, say I had this charger and I was baking a turkey and drying a load of laundry; I would want it to only make 30 amps available. If it was middle of the night and everything was off in the house it could make 80amps available. I understand that usually the car can request up to the maximum set by the dip switches and perhaps in the car app you can slow it down but is there a way to do this in the charger to not depend on the car to do the right thing?
@huddlesj6580218 сағат бұрын
Does the 80 amp charger still broadcast the set up network after you have it added to your network??? I sent back the 40 amp charger because of this. You could log into the setup network after it was set up and get the credentials for your home network using a password you can find on the internet.

Still only supports 2.4Ghz WiFi. Due to extreme congestion in the 2.4Ghz spectrum I can't get a signal out to where my charger is located. Really need someone to spend a few more bucks and make an EVSE that also supports 5Ghz WiFi. Even though 2.4Ghz is quite a bit better than 5Ghz for things like going through walls, the 2.4Ghz only has 3 non-overlapping WiFi channels (1, 6 & 11). Compared to 5Ghz where there there are 24 non-overlapping channels.

19:30 - it wasn’t fighting you, it was pre-coiled . All you had to do was collapse it back into the shape it was partially in anyhow. Seems best to put it back the way it wants to be put back. It would have fit great around the wall-mounted unit. Looks like that is a protective effect for the cold drop test.
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney15 сағат бұрын
You're missing the point. If I could freeze it stretched out as if it was uncoiled and charging a car, I would. It wouldn't be coiled up like that if it was stretched out to reach a car. In that case you need to coil it up and it won't comply. I've been cold weather testing EV charger cables for years now and I know when a cable is a good cold weather cable and when it isn't. This one isn't 🙂

It is a compact housing though and bending the 4 or 6 gauge wires would be a royal pain. For the dip switches I agree but here’s a firmware that just rearranged the current limits on them so any labeling would have needed to be updated.
