I don’t know how everyone else feels about this format (I suppose I could read the comments, but I won’t) …I really dig it!!! I love how you break down location, genre, and label and give a quick synopsis & your feedback on the record. I’ve taken a lot of screenshots to explore these bands / artists …especially those of the shoegaze / dream pop ilk. You have become one of my music gurus (guruesses?). Merry Christmas to you and Chris.

That really is so kind of you to say you enjoy this format! I spent a lot of time on this. It probably would have been easier for me to film a "normal" video, but it was fun to learn something different! I may occasionally use this format in the future, too! There was a lot of shoegaze/dream pop on this list, so I hope you find several that you love! Merry Christmas back to you from Chris and I! Thank you!

Hey Hannah! Thanks for the list. I look forward to hearing a lot of this as it is new to me. I see you successfully avoided The Lemon Twigs bandwagon. I did not. lol A Dream Is All We Know is my #1 of the year, Redd Kross' s/t was a close #2. On the jazz side Jerome Sabbagh's Heart album is great (a worthy follow-up to 2023's Vintage.) Happy New Year!!

A lot of bands I have never heard of = an exciting chance to discover new music! Your description of Smush peaked my curiosity...at least the first half :P I also took note of Bibi Club, Weak Signal, High Vis, NewDad and of course your number one pick Virgins - Nothing Hurt and Everything Was Beautiful to check out. I agree about Thus Love; the first record got a lot of spins but the follow up just didn't grab me. Mary Timony is on my personal top 10. The new Deary got an honorable mention for me. I liked knowing where the artists hailed from, the genres and the label; very detailed and informative. I can tell you worked very hard on this. Congrats on learning something new. Happy holidays!

Nice picks and presentation! Some familiar to me, some new, thanks! Although, I'm very surprised and curious that A Dream Is All We Know by The Lemon Twigs is not in here. Especially since how discovering your channel was through your Power Pop and Jangle Pop appreciation videos... I think I even mentioned them in the comments on Instagram or on here to you. The quality of the songwriting and sounds are undeniable, so it's strange there's no mention, let alone them being high in this 2024 list. So much so, if you played it next to any of the top 10 here and fair to say it's stands strong as a collection and would even be deemed a classic.

Digging the new format as it makes it easier to take notes on bands I want to check out! Great job! Love High Vis! You mentioned Letters To Cleo - I saw them play here in my city back in the '90s. Man, I thought I was thorough in my post-punk deep dives, yet you snagged Louse. Nice one! You're also the first I've seen to mention Magic Shoppe, they've been a favorite since I heard their second album nearly a decade ago. I'll just list a few things that weren't in your list which you might like if you hadn't already heard 'em. You probably heard my shoegaze picks, since yr like the shoegaze queen... The Narcotix - Dying: Brooklyn band’s debut is a master class in polyrhythmic vocal innovation and beauty. Citing influences like African wedding music, neoclassical symphonies, Afrobeat, Paramore, Kofi Olomide, and Warpaint, their first EP was an extension of the shapeshifting, ethereal music of Raincoats’ Odyshape (1981), Lizzy Mercier Descloux’s global post-punk fusion on Mambo Nassau (1981), and The Slits circa Return of the Giant Slits (1981) where they fuse their dub roots with skewed African rhythms. The full-length is not much longer, but it packs a lot in, including lushly layered arrangements weaving Siera Leonean Adam Turay’s beautifully abstract guitar shapes and 12/8 polyrhythms. The dense but dreamy production recalls peak Kate Bush. But where they really push things forward is their vocals, which careen through French, Spanish, and wordless yodels, whatever it takes for Quansah’s and Foinchas’ voices to express their spiritual and existential meditations. Check out the emotional range they project with just “la la la” on “The Maiden.” This is one area where Western music has played it very safe and conservative the past couple decades. I have to go back to Sheila Chandra’s ABoneCroneDrone (1996), Sussan Deyhim’s Madman of God: Divine Love Songs of the Persian Sufi Masters (2000), and Björk on Medúlla (2004) to find equally adventurous use of vocals in pop music. The Blinders - Beholder: Their previously raucous punk blues/garage psych sound get more brooding and menacing, like a mix of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds with the dark romance post-punk of Echo & the Bunnymen and late era Arctic Monkeys, but less loungey louche. At times Thomas Hayward brings to mind The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser’ bruised soulfulness, while the band evokes some of the most evocatively cinematic crime noir atmospherics since Gallon Drunk and The Flaming Stars. Garage Noir | Garage Punk | Heavy Psych. RIYL: Echo & the Bunnymen, Nick Cave, Gallon Drunk, The Flaming Stars, The Walkmen, Arctic Monkeys, Fontaines D.C., Thus Love, The Buttertones. Mo Dotti - Opaque: Shoegaze, dream/noise/jangle pop from L.A. Whitelands - Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind to the Day: UK shoegaze. Coincidentally, they're the first band recommended on the Virgins Bandcamp page. Meatbodies - Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom: Garage Psych | Heavy Psych | Shoegaze | Noise Pop. RIYL Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Ty Segal, WAND, …Trail of Dead, The Black Angels Pøltergeist - Nachtmusik: Canadian metal dude discovers iscover 80s post-punk like The Chameleons and The Sound, and early goth (Sisters Of Mercy, The Mission) and dream pop (Cocteau Twins). Deadletter - Hysterical Strength: UK post-punk, art punk, jazz-rock, dance-punk. Hamish Hawk - A Firmer Hand: UK Singer-songwritter embraces post-punk, goth and glam, with a baritone like Peter Murphy. Ist Ist - Light a Bigger Fire: UK post-punk, darkwave, goth. Unto Others - Never, Neverland: Traditionally goth metal, there's more post-punk in their sound this time around. Smoke Bellow - Structurally Sound Memorials - Memorial Waterslides Desperate Journalist - No Hero Crumb - AMAMA Position Parallele - Aiguille a decoudre Ghostly Kisses - Darkroom The Resonars - Electricity Plus The Resonars is just #7 on my power pop list, but one of the few that is really full-on power pop, along with The Blank Tapes and Valley Lodge. My #1, White Denim - 12, only has fleeting power pop elements. I previously recommended my overall #2 pick The Sea Kings and #6 Ducks Ltd. It's pretty amazing that you got nearly 50 new albums -- would love to hear more about your discoveries when it's happening! I've also been diving into metallic goth like Neon Nightmare and Cemetery Skyline. SoftSun is shoegaze, but with a heavy doom element.

Lots of stuff to check out that we’ve never heard of, you’re way more in tune with newer bands than we are! Anything on Trouble In Mind and Sonic Cathedral are always worth a listen. We posted our top 20 this morning. I thought our lists would have more in common, but we bought mostly “established” artists this year and fewer newer artists. We almost included the Church lp since it had a more official release this year, but we bought the cd last year on their US tour so considered it more of a 2023 release, could go in either year really! We did manage to squeeze the latest Kilbey/Kennedy lp into our list, so the Church are at least represented. Cheers!

Thanks for posting this, including all the BC links! Had some fun listening through them. Amyl's vocals remind me of Poison Girls. -- Lots of CA acts, interesting. -- Ordered Topiaries (in contrast the new old Cure), fascinating that it Tolhurst Jr. -- Kim Gordon: would not have thought in a million years that you would like this! Or is it the Sonic Youth connection? -- Mt. Fog is interestingly idiosyncratic.

I totally agree with your assessment on Thus Love, I was obsessed with that first record. I think they just "rock" more live and wanted to represent that on the new album. I just feel that they are almost a different band now and perhaps that first outing was just a magical personal expression that made it out into the world that they will never deliver on again. We will just have to wait and see...but on another note who ever is booking and managing them seems to have them on a pretty solid trajectory, and with that I hope we see something more experimental and with more depth as they approach the 3rd album. Fingers 🤞

Thanks so much for sharing this list. You have such great taste, which gives me confidence I'll find some real gems here. I just ordered the entire Chime School catalogue as well as the Virgins lp - only 9 copies left! Here's a question: is it hard to avoid making comparisons to 80's and 90's bands with Dream Pop and Shoegaze? The older I get, the harder it is to get that initial game-changing thrill from musical first loves. It's not about being original any more, but that doesn't mean the music can't be amazing.
@TheOmahaIntrovert11 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the warm words, Kevin! With shoegaze and dream pop, I guess it's hard to explain a band's sound without comparing them to their predecessors. It's hard to find something completely original anymore. Everything is influenced by something from the past, I suppose. I still think the best eras for music have already happened. That all being said, there really is so much amazing new music out there! Happy to read that you ordered some Chime School and that Virgins LP! The Virgins LP is also still available here for others who need it in the future: blowtorchrecords.bandcamp.com/album/nothing-hurt-and-everything-was-beautiful Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert you are so right. There is too much good new music out there to take in. I'm also going to order those Deary EPs' in the new year. Thanks for identifying categories for the bands you present. It's helpful. Also hope you've been keeping up with the Juliana Hatfield re-issues. The latest one, How to Walk Away, from 2004 is killer! Happy holidays!

Excellent choices, Hanna. Thanks for the recommendations. I have to check out a lot of these, but I truly enjoyed Songs of a Lost World by The Cure, which is the best album of the year, in my opinion.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Sure, Hannah. It'd be great if you could rank all the albums from The Cure. I'm not sure if you've done one before, but I look forward to it. I've watched some of your videos over the past couple of months and I've really enjoyed them. Keep up the stellar work!

I both thank you and apologize 'cause this could get long. The Mt. Fog and particularly Molina fed my appetite for more experimental music as I've gotten older. I thought for a moment we were getting a cover of the dbs from Molina, lol. I've recently dipped into Mary Timony and Jessica Pratt; haven't gotten to this one by Mary but just listened to and loved "Here in the Pitch". Really dug the album by NewDad and liked your number 1, but I did find the vocals a little buried. Will check out that 'other' band from Cincinnati and many others here, and again thanks.

Some great recommendations there. Your mention of the band The Sound has introduced me to their music. I'd never even heard of them before. I just bought From The Lion's Mouth on orange vinyl. What a fantastic album. I'm just waiting for the coloured vinyls of Jeopardy, All Fall Down and Heads & Hearts to arrive in the post. Thanks for the recommend.

I'm still compiling my 2024 list, but here's all the dreampop/gaze bands on it so far: NewDad / Julie Dawson (i think i like her solo album a little better than newdad), Bleary Eyed, Ride, Sunshy, Shower Curtain, Fazerdaze, Mo Dotti, Dummy, Peel Dream Magazine, TTSSFU, Starcleaner Reunion, Somesurprises, Blushing. I love DIIV but for some reason I could not really get into this new album like everyone else. It's just so lethargic. I felt the same way about Clinic Stars! Not that theyre terrible, I would have def loved it way more when I was 19

Apart from your excellent taste in music, for me, your personality, enthusiasm, love and devotion to the music you talk abut in each video is one of the main reasons I tune in every time. Hello Hanna, the music today is not my thing!!! I buy always reissues or old reissues version of classic cds like the siouxsie and the banshees peel sessions, soon i will receive the remaster version of siouxsie "peep show"(a hard to find cd) !! I buy the abba compilation (two great songs were missing-pfff what a bummer) !! I hope soon the first three cd album from chris isaak will be released with a better sound, my cds are bloody awful!!!! I hope the movie "pink floyd the wall" will be soon on blu-ray, they missed the 40th anniversary-i was sooo disappointed, and also the original soundtrack mixes, still unavailable!!! The same with the beatles, the rooftop concert, i have a non official cd version !!!! I wish you a great xmas time with your family, take care-Byyyye-Patrick.
