If you read the BSG comics, and novels they present some interesting pieces of information about the Mercury-class. For example, we find out that even though it's almost twice as big as the Jupiter class, the Mercury class's interior is mostly taken up by fabrication facilities (not weapons). So being bigger in this case is not necessarily an advantage. The Mercury class was considered a "test-bed" for new technologies (like on-board Viper factories), but was never intended to be mass produced as it was absurdly expensive. Many Admirals considered the Mercury-class to be bloated, and preferred the more economical and cheaper Valkyrie-class, and Jupiter class refit (Galactica was not chosen for a refit due to its age). Being posted to a highly expensive Mercury-class was considered a "prestige" post (but one with very little fleet authority). The Fleet Adrmirals stuck Admiral Cain on the Pegasus to "honor" her, but secretly they all thought she was crazy and unfit for commanding fleets. They wanted her someplace where she wouldn't be able to make important decisions. We also find out about some ship war games that were carried out with the Pegasus against the smaller Battlestars. Admiral Cain ended up actually losing in the war games repeatedly against older smaller battlestars. The reason? Because she was incredibly inflexible, and not able to adapt to changing/unconventional tactics. She was too by the book and predictable. Other Captains, and ship commanders secretly made fun of her for inability to win with a larger more modern ship. So yeah, the BSG books and comics are interesting. You should read them.

I could buy that. Admiral Cain was a little unhinged as well as rigid and inflexible. As Adama noted, she insisted on fighting a war that had already been lost, instead of shifting to the new priority: the overall survival of humanity. Having her civilian fleet with them would greatly improve the situation in that regard, but in Razor, they say that Cain abandoned them early on and they presumably were destroyed.
@leodouskyron5671Ай бұрын
Nice info. I thought is Cain as running her war like a Russian General in WWII, use everything, never back down and take everything(& except everyone) you can get your hands on to toss at the enemy while burning. What you can’t use. And while effective at winning some fights it would ultimately play into the hands of the Cylons that were totally okay with no humans survivors even if they “won’t the war”.

The Pegasus having fabrication facilities is an advantage the Galactica lacks. Armor plating, Viper MK VIIs that the Galactica cannot produce. It also is the one with a better DRADIS and a gun that fires a train that can rip apart weaksauce meat-composed, missile-exclusive baseships. In universe, in its current context, it was a mistake to sacrifice the lifeline for the Ragtag Fleet for the sake of a worn down warship that was beaten to hell on its way out of New Caprica, no matter how out-of-touch with the show’s name it would have been
@jakeg37335 күн бұрын
This is their biggest advantage and it cannot be overstated. Campaigns like the ghost fleet offensive taught Colonial Fleet a lot of important lessons about supply chains and logistics; stick a factory in a fully functional warship was one of the smartest ideas anyone could have had. These things are essentially the mothership from Homeworld; the single most import asset in a fleet group, because it can spin up support ships from raw materials, light years away from the nearest Colonial base. _Lee was a frakking idiot_

That ship had manufacturing capability. How difficult would some big white letters be? Her crew might take some retraining to get Caine’s lunacy out of their heads but having 4 operational flight decks would be nice… I always wondered just how did they handle the “upside down” decks. I mean when they were on the floor they were right side up but when it was time to go to the main ship…

Actually... while it is assumed Commander Cain and the Pegasus were destroyed during their final battle against 2 base stars it was never confirmed, at least not on-screen. Glen A. Larson, the producer of the series, had plans to follow up on the story of the Pegasus, but this unfortunately never happened.

Yes rechristening Peggy Galactica could be easily done. The Pegasus was a ship that could build smaller ships, constructing some big letters should be no problem. All of Pegasus’s capabilities were wasted.

I'd also have her carrying 130 Vipers and 70 raptors, with all 4 hangar bays using the stacking method featured in bsg blood & chrome. I'd also have it carrying the onboard manufacturing facilities to replace any losses. I'd also add a cloning facility as well. Cylons wouldn't stand a chance.

The thing I disliked the most about the Pegasus was that they destroyed it. The fate of the original made more sense but they had put Lee in as commander. If they had the Galactica pull away as the Pegasus was going and told the Galactica to make best jump but never rejoins the fleet that works better to my mind. Of course it had to go only because 1)RL production cost 2)they didn’t know how to provide a good threat level in stories 3) having the hero ship be the less potent ship makes for poor drama.

From a objective point of view, I know the Mercury class is a better ship than the Jupiter class. More firepower, more armor, more reactivity thanks to the automatisation and technological advance. But personnaly, I will always favorise the Jupiter and GALACTICA in particular. More than 50 years of service, veteran of two wars, one she fought almost alone, and in the end, she was the last one standing. Mortaly wounded but she was the one who put the last nail in the Cylon loyalist's coffin. GALACTICA was a classic, as Cain put it, but she was a Beast of a classic.

I agree. We never got to really see how the Peggy operated. Maybe there was some reason that they didn’t have mirrored flight decks? Maybe the “upside down” decks were for emergency landings like the ship wants to recover a whole lot of ships so it can jump away? Imagine landing Vipers right side up and upside down at the same time… I haven’t studied the ship that closely, are the upside down decks also fitted with launch tubes?

But you watched BSG 2004?? Does not sound like it. There are now 3 TV 'space opera's' that 'sci-fi' people put in their top 3 all time fave's list regularly, if not all 3 and those are; Babylon 5, BSG 2004 and recently: 'The Expanse'. (In various orders) Because the story lines and character development are fantastic. Much work was put in to those story's (compared to the original BSG where much money was put in to costumes and well known actors spouting verbal Diarrhea) So if you havent watched any of those 3 I actually envy you. The original B.S.G. (1978-79) has an i.m.d.b. score of 7.2. Battlestar Galactica 2004 has an i.m.d.b. score of . . . 8.7. That is ~ 15x more appreciated cos the score is not linear, it behaves more scalar.. (No other t.v. sci-fi series even matches that score but whatever, a terrible junk budget unwatched show can still score '4') 'The Expanse' scores 8.5 and Babylon 5 scores 8.4 despite its age. Sorry if I interrupted your serious appraisal of BSG 1978, I am sure you had a hard hitting in depth review to share.

At least the re-imagined BSG had the common sense to put the CIC deep inside the ship instead of putting a bridge on top of the alligator head right up front where it can catch bullets.
