"Down and out in Paris and London" hands down remains a fantastic narrative of Orwell's trek into pennilessness through the streets returning to employment. It also remains a clear primer textbook on surviving homelessness. While I resided in the Olympia Tent City in 2019, my dogeared copy helped me navigate the world of Spikes, Strikes, and Snipes--all current as they were in Orwell's day. Thank you, Justine for this recommendation.

The best book I read all year, and possibly ever, was A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. There’s rarely a day that goes by where the characters don’t pop on my head if even for a brief moment. I learned so much about the art of embracing less-than-perfect circumstances with grace and choosing to create a life with what we’ve been given. I can’t say enough about this book. Everyone should read it.

Of mice and men is brilliant. Steinbeck doesn’t describe his characters‘ feelings, just externally observable things, and yet you always know exactly what they are feeling and thinking. Remarkable.

Thank you for this video! I’d love to see more like this. I also love Artist’s Way, and am still getting thru it. It’s As much a psychological read as a workbook for making art. Aside from that, other favorites I read this year were Wolf by James L Haley, about the incomparable Jack London (another artist whose views belong in the time they were expressed); also Just Kids by Patti Smith, which was everything I’d hoped it would be; lastly, I’m now totally obsessed with the poetry of Mary Oliver.

The Artist's Way is basically the bible for each writer, creative, and writing teacher I know, including myself! I agree, it's a great book to read time and time again. On the fiction front, I greatly enjoyed Japanese author Sayaka Murata and Belgian author Adeline Dieudonné, both of which had new books released in 2022. Their work is deliciously weird and kooky, I suspect they must be sort of soul sisters in a way ;) Thanks for your great tips, Justine! I really enjoyed The Culture Map, which you recommended a while ago. Wishing you a great Christmas!

I have added all of these books to my reading list for 2023 :) I became obsessed with Stefan Zweig's books this year. Beware of Pity (his only novel) is the most gripping story that I have read in years and The World of Yesterday made me hopelessly nostalgic for a Europe that I will never know (pre-WWI) before turning dark in the second half with the misery of the two World Wars and ultimately exile from his beloved Austria. They are definitely worth reading if you haven't already.

I don't read very many nonfiction books but your list intrigued me. I will definitely give at least a few a read. This year I reread an old favorite series, the Travis McGee series by John D. Macdonald. While the male/female dynamic is different today, the books were written in the sixties, his deep philosophical views of life, love, human nature, and the environment are timeless. He is just an excellent wordsmith. His character Travis McGee lives life on his own terms. And the books are mostly set in Florida and I am a 4th generation Floridian. So much to love. Speaking of love, your content consistently offers so much to love.❤

Wonderful list, Justine. I've been meaning to read The Artist's Way for years and never quite got to it, so 2023 might just the year. I definitely putting the Orwell and The Threads of Life on my wish list and will look out for the others as well. One of the best books I've read in the last year or so is In Praise of Paths: Walking Through Time and Nature by Norwegian writer Torbjørn Ekelund. It’s a fantastic and unexpected meditation on how paths are made, how they impact the landscape and how we move through our environment. It’s just lovely. I can also recommend Just Kids by Patti Smith about her life in New York in the late sixties and her relationship with Robert Maplethorpe.

Thank you for sharing the books you have read. I will definitely check one or two out. The best book I have read this year is Dinner With Edward by Isabel Vincent. I had spent most of the year only reading non-fiction books about work. The book is a true story. Of course the focus is during dinner time and the meals themselves, but to me the beauty of it is the conversations at dinner and the growth of the characters. I did gain an appreciation of food that pleases the senses and now try to make something monthly that I have never eaten before. I no longer rush through meals and really look around me to soak in the beauty in everyday life. It is a short light read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

What an absolutely beautiful selection of books. That's something I personally would have never picked up myself. I'm especially interested in the Artist's Way. Looks like a brilliant read full of practical tools. Merry Christmas Justine and happy new year 🎉

I have taught the Artist’s Way for years as a course. You can go through it with a group of friends and will be astounded where it can take you. I recommend doing a chapter a month. But getting together once a week to share insights and challenges. No need to be rigid about it (you are creatives, after all!) Use the book as a jumping off place to heal wounds around art making and to create breakthroughs! Have fun like the little kid you were before someone praised or criticized you!

The Artist’s Way changed my life: it should have a warning sign across the book. It’s that powerful!

The first book sounds right up my alley! I've been thinking about getting into purchasing art, but I'm not planning on dropping a fortune on some elitist (although valuable and beautiful) piece. So I'm really excited to see what the book suggests. Not even 1 minute into the video and it's already a win!

Thank you. So inspiring! I didn't read many books this year but of those that I have read, two are by far the best. 'All quiet on the Western Front" and "Three comrades". Both are classic, written by Erich Maria Remarque.

Not a book but one of the best tv shows I watched this year was Irma Vep starring Alicia Vikander. It is a remake of the 90s movie, made by exactly the same director, who intertwines his own relationship with the movie into the series. It is a creative, unique approach, and feels different from many tv shows. Definitely a treat for cinephiles as it also shows scenes from the original Irma Vep from the 20s. It is set in Paris, and Nicolas Ghesquiere from Luis Vuitton designed the Cat suit Alicia Vikander wears.

My mother would LOVE the embroidery history book. As her birthday is in March, I will get it for her! As for myself, I definitely want the Daily Rituals and The Artist's Way books!

Thank you! Brilliant tips! I'd recommend anyone who hasn't already to read anything by Nina Bouraoui translated to many different languages. Many great titles to chose from, very interesting contemporary writer (experienced but not old) with a totally unique and important voice. Merry Christmas! ❤️

Bonjour Justine, je suis au Québec, j'adore ta chaîne! Une super lecture, essentielle, qui remet en question notre rapport au maquillage : Maquillée par Daphné B. En espérant qu'il soit disponible aussi en France. Joyeuses fêtes!

Most books I read this year are only available in Dutch, but I really loved the German novel Alte Sorten by Ewald Arenz. A book I read years ago, but think you might like if you haven't already read it: the Hare with the Amber Eyes, written by Edmund de Waal: it tells the history of a collection of Japanese artefacts, netsukes, that has been in his family for two centuries; you travel through time and Europe from Odessa to Vienna to Paris (and also cross the world to Japan). Like the book you shared about embroidery, it is about much more than "just" an art collection, very fascinating and lovely book.

Hey Justine, what a coincidence. I also currently read (or work with) Julia Cameron's The artist way. When you talked about these daily routines, a skillshare class came to my mind, which I can recommend: Ana Marcu, especially "Homeoffice Interior Design for More Creativity". I have the strong feeling that you might like it, too.

Thanks for your amazing recommendations! It certainly prompts me to read some of these works. I did not read as much this year, but one book that I really enjoyed is Time by Carlos Rovelli. I believe it is also available as an audio book.

I really enjoyed reading "Jackie As Editor" by Greg Lawrence, it's a biography of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis focussing on her years as a literary editor for several publishing houses in the US. It's a side of her life that is not very well known.

Hi Justine! I enjoyed this video as much as the ones covering fashion. Thank you! 🥰 My favourite book of this year would be "Inseparable" by Simone de Beauvoir

Isn’t it fun to see where a person’s mood or stage or process or interest(s) or lacking and/or what’s to develop in their “journey” by the books they read? In my case, I will check Les Culottées and The Artist’s Way, thanks for the recs, J 😊 And happy schenkele season :)

I love these suggestions and am especially excited to find a copy of the embroidery book. From my reading this year, I would highly recommend Memory Serves by Lee Maracle and Women Talking by Miriam Toews (actually, anything these women write seems to be gold...)
