One tip I have is when you've failed to do something in time, or are too tired to work, don't feel guilty and overwork yourself to try to finish the task. Have some time off, relax, and try again tomorrow.

Greetings from Chile!! My productivity tips: 1. Plan the next day right after you stop working. This makes picking up at the next day way quicker. 2. Only check the mail twice a day. Otherways you won't be able to complete complex tasks. 3. Have a hobbie you can pick up for a short moment before going to sleep, to clear your mind and have a nice rest.

I am turning 48 this year, I study law full time at the University and I work 36 hours a week. And I have a house to take care of and a man. So I know how difficult time management is. And I still do not have the formula to manage it as good as I woul like to. But, I have learned that it is very important to rest when you are tired even if the task is not finished. Everything you do on a tired mind is a waste of time , really! Take your time to rest (without guilt too) and resume when you are fresh. This is the one thing I have tried that really works. Respect for your body and make some time for your hobbies without making them a task as well!

Congrats also to Skillshare to understand fashion designer channels not necessarily have to always talk about fashion design.

I check my calendar for the next day's events before sleep so I can sleep soundly. If I wake in the night with ideas or thoughts, I write them on a sticky note and address the next day when appropriate. I don't check my phone for any messages until I am at work. This is how I protect my personal time. I tell my friens and family, if it's an emergency, send the police. This cuts down on non-emergency "emergencies"

I write every single: thought/need/to-do/find/buy/want/errand/birthday--everything--down in a little notebook kept in my purse. When I am out-and-about, I consult the notebook as a reminder. I keep all of my snail mail in a basket. Then, once a week, I go through the notebook and the basket, checking off done tasks, opening mail, paying bills, making calls...If I can't pay it or check it off, I don't sweat it! I do it the following week. I also keep wall calendars everywhere, with important, upcoming events so I can plan for and around them. Thanks for all of your great ideas!

Such a lot of wise advice here. Multi-tasking is a complete myth - no one does it well, no matter what they think. My job is one that is never finished. There's always a list of things to do that haven't been done yet. I have the Reminder app on my phone set up with a list for each day, so I use that to keep track of the things I need to do. When I list things there I find I can smash that list out before school starts, and I feel more relaxed throughout the day. The other thing that has been really important for me is to have one day over the weekend when I do absolutely no work. That's a Sunday for me. I don't go shopping, I don't do housework, I don't do work work...nothing. It's Sunday Nap Day around here!

wonderful video! 100% agree that each of us has to define our own system, but it is fun to experiment too! One of my practices was (6 years ago) to let my family, friends, etc. know that on Friday nights, after work, 'I'm closed." Meaning no cooking, no socializing, no cleaning, no events, no laundry -- nothing - I'm not available. I come home and do anything I want - and sometimes I just go to bed at 7, meditate, and fall asleep. I want that time, at the close of my work week, to transition, flow off all the built-up 'stress' or high energy levels accumulated during the week, so that on Saturday morning, I truly wake up refreshed and RELAXED. no carry-over. It's worked brilliantly, and now everyone in my life is used to it!

Just a small tip that works really well for me...I keep a small notebook on my desk and when information I might need comes at me, I write it down (much more satisfying and faster at that moment for me than using the computer for this). When the notebook is full or at least regularly, I go through it and put the bit of information where it makes sense to file it (electronically or hard copy) for future reference and I cross it off in the notebook.

This is so important and couldn't have come at a better time, thank you Justine! As a creative and proactive person like you (a freelance musician who still studies on the side) I can definitely relate. Not only do I have to practise for myself, prepare for projects with different ensembles on top of hours of rehearsals (almost always away from home), I also need to organise all my travel myself, reply to countless emails every day, prepare scores etc. and as I search for a fixed job, also keeping an eye on which jobs are open, send applications and try to manage to get to the auditions. Sometimes I have so many things to do each day that I feel overwhelmed and struggle to find time to do the 'normal' things like food shopping, cooking, cleaning and... sleeping! I find it very difficult to have friends, hobbies or to relax but I try to be strict about setting that time aside as otherwise I will just burn out. You are a big inspiration to many of us.

My habit: set breakfast routine I have free time in the morning, and I used to spend it having a really slow breakfast including deciding what to eat. Now I have changed that. I have a "go-to" meal which i love. It is a rye-bread sandwich with avocado, meat, and other toppings. This takes me 30 min to prepare and eat every morning, at a relaxed pace. This way I do not have to make a new decision every morning "what do I want to eat". Furthermore, I know that this breakfast will keep me full and satisfied until lunch time. So there is no questioning "am I still hungry, do I need to eat a bit extra". Having a "go-to" breakfast means I have one less decision to make in the morning. This is a routine that has been great for me.

I feel like I should try to schedule things more, because I’m a procrastinator. But when I looked closer at the problem, I realized it was because I didn’t have deadlines. It’s more tricky with other things, but when I’m procrastinating creatively when I need to be producing...well, creativity, I set a timer and see how many ideas I can randomly throw onto a doc before the time is up. It helps when you’ve got other people doing with you too.

'I will fiercely defend my time'. Wonderful! THAT is the nub of it. It is operating from a place of deep self respect and self knowledge. I have a chronic illness and the best gift I have given myself is to schedule life for how am I'm now and not force a pace for the me I used to be. This has been a work in process for a good while. So for instance I need 9-10 hours sleep per night to keep as well mentally, emotionally and physically as I can be. I need quiet days between days of activity so now do not schedule two busy days in a row. Once a week I need a day with literally nothing happening in it, not even a wash to put on. Once I got this bedrock [forgive the pun...lol] in place everything else fits around it and I have begun to enjoy life again. Having little energy has made me very thrifty with the little I have. So my energy is for my choir singing, for the people and events I love, for the rhythm of work I do to keep my family and home happy and healthy. I have no energy over at all for non-essential people, place or events. Nor anymore do I explain or defend myself. I do a lot of planning ahead with people so that the important things get scheduled and don't get lost in the busyness of life. This took a long time to work out but the core of was in accepting myself as I was and no longer apologising nor requiring anyone else's permission or validation. It was and is a process. You are so inspiring and thought provoking! I am old school so I write everything down in a diary but I am so impressed with your digital planning for your complex life. I will be using that Eisenhower Matrix which I had never heard of before. Very focusing.

I like to pack my things the evening before so I don't have to scramble around in the morning (and often forget something). I multitask the house chores so I can have more time for other things (vacuum while the bread is baking, turn on washing machine and scrub the bathroom while it's running, etc). I try to fit the activities and overlap them only when it gives me results, and other things I do with focus, like you :) Work has to be prioritized and that is rule no.1 for me. I liked the tip about the calendar and colors, I'll definitely try that one. As always, great video Justine, already can't wait for the next one! Bisous!

Incredible content Justine, and such a smart way to choose the sponsoring. KZbinrs sometimes just introduce some random sponsor in their video, but the product or service is unrelated to the content (or if it is, they don't explicitly make that connection and the ad loses impact). My 2 cents on this topic: underlying your advice is a sense of self-confidence and self-empowerment (say 'no', 'you do you' etc.). Often times, people have access to tips and tricks like the ones you share, but they will struggle to implement them because they lack self-confidence. Perhaps you could also share aspects of your journey in that regard in a future video ;) All the best!

@@gabrielatremarin8514 Sorry to hear that. It's very common though. There is no magic bullet, but I'd say think back what was happening when you were working hard, and what can you do now to bring back some of that. A productivity tip that works for me is to batch tasks on the same day. For example, having most of my meetings on the same day so I can focus on other tasks without interruptions for meetings. 8 hours: I'm with you. I have been laughed at so many times for being "lazy", "winners get up early", bla bla bla. The thing is: if I slept enough, I catch up throughout the day & at the end, I have achieved the same or more than others. So stick to your 8 hours, success doesn't correlate witb sleep deprivation :o)

I only work a food service job but I'm highly focused on my routine at home which allows me to get the necessary rest I need to perform physically for 8 hours a day. I whisk my eggs and scoop my oatmeal in a bowl the day before so I can make breakfast quickly. Dishes are washed immediately after I eat and I swipe my counters with a cleaning wipe. I also make my bed first thing when I wake up so when I get home I can just crawl into bed. Also, weirdly enough I found it better to shower quickly twice a day instead of one long shower once a day. I shower right before I get into bed because it helps me relax and gets all the grunge off from my job, and once in the morning to wake up.

1. Instead of emailing back and forth 5 times, call the person and close the case if you can. 2. Send a text message to people who are difficult to reach. Or make a call. Personally, I like Monday meetings. They help me with overall orientation in the workplace, what's in the pipeline and to estimate how things coming up will influence my work.

There are a number of scientific studies that show that creativity doesn't happen on a clock or in a formal setting. Researchers keep flexible schedules for the same reason. There is pressure to get us on 9-5 schedules, but that invariably fails. I do my most productive research when I am supposed to be on vacation. It's like dormant parts of my brain awake when I am not bound by day to day meetings and time regulated tasks. This leads me to the working on week-ends (or vacation). It's good to have understanding friends and family, but it is important to realize the importance of taking at least one day off a week (a real day off) and a week or two of vacation (real vacation) every year. Christmas is generally a good time for that. I have been in situations where I was just unable to keep one day free of work weekly and would go for long strings of working every day. I ended up with all kinds of weird health symptoms and a couple visits to the emergency room (at a young age). The same has happened to younger colleagues of mine in academia. I fiercely defend my Saturdays as being completely off.

I am also a researcher in the lab! Recently I also had to work through the whole week every day, but that is not healthy and productive at all as I was not not a robot and my body just got tired so much and my house got dirty like a garbage bin...We definitely need to have a one or as in my case needing more time off 2 days off per week! And then focus on the job!

Thanks for the great tips, Justine! I seem to have adapted to a lot of the same habits as you, but it took a while to get there. I have also learned two important things over time that keep my productivity as well as my creativity up and running. One is to never ever criticizing myself if I don't meet a self-imposed deadline as long as I've made an effort to make it, it's OK to finish a bit later than planned. The second is when I have my "social media time" only follow people that are helpful, positive, and make me feel good. There's no worse waste of time than to feel behind, not good enough, or that I haven't come "far enough" in my business, so I stopped following a lot of channels and only stick to the best ones that bring good vibes to my life. Like yours for example :)

I really appreciated your video, Justine! I will remerber your quote « On ne peut pas être au four et au moulin ». It is a pearl of wisdom. Here is one of my favorite quote I learned this year : « Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien » This means that sometimes we want to do something perfect, but we create problems, by doing so. Sometimes, to be efficient, « Good enough » is the key. Have a great sunday xx

Also it is important to remember that what strategies work for you may change over time, so it can be good to occasionally evaluate how they are working. I am currently a student and how I study now is very different from how I studied 2 years ago. You grow as a person all the time, and your circumstances are also changing even if you may not think about it!

Merci, Justine! Wow. Your productivity tips are pure gold. I'm looking forward to using that Eisenhower matrix, which looks quite useful. I also use Trello to organize projects & keep track of my to-dos, doings, & dones. Your tips on time management, habits, & color-coded scheduling are basically what I used to teach my college students struggling with classes, jobs, & social pressures. Once you've built a schedule (with flexibility, of course) & have formed useful habits, life becomes much easier & happier. And I agree about email folders: unnecessary, counterproductive, time-consuming, & fussy. Color coding & search is really all you need. On weekends, I like to make soup or a big salad (think tabbouleh, orzo salad, etc.) for lunches. That way, I save money & eat healthier. When I'm not working on something scheduled, I ask myself this important question, from Alan Lakein: What is the best use of my time right now?

Hi Justine. I have recently started taking on more than is sensible and instead of taking stock, reorganising and saying no when i should have, I have felt obliged to push myself. Making sure everyone else's needs are being met, at the expense of my own and of my own free time, which is indeed so valuable. I needed this reminder now in a big way. Thank you. This video was absolutely time well spent!🥂 This is also the first time i have commented on one of your videos and therefore i would like to tell you how much i enjoy your channel and how much truly useful information i have found here. I have made many a decision in the last couple of years with something you have said in your videos popping into my head to help me along! There is real quality here and i find you utterly charming. I wish you every success for your future and hope you are enjoying your Sunday🍁🍂🍃

I needed this video as I am at a point in my professional life where I am right on the edge of not being able to run my marathon anymore. The advice on learning to say no is gold. I have a very hard time turning down opportunities and it's led me into trouble. I do try to drop one role when taking on a new one. Perhaps something I have been doing for a while and where I don't feel I am contributing any longer or learning anything new. But I definitely need to be more careful and less greedy. I love how Justine has clear rules. She has identified them, quantified them, put them in words or on paper, and more importantly, is letting others know. That is also gold advice. It's better to let people know what you can and cannot do, rather than fail to respond to requests and look unprofessional. I will work on that. I am too obsessive compulsive to let my inbox fill up too much. Having 500 messages in it stresses me out. So I do file everything away. If an email is quick to deal with, I do that. If it isn't, I create an item on my task manager and/or calendar and file the email in "ungoing business" so that when I come back to the task, I can easily locate the relevant information. Once the task is done, the task manager item gets deleted and the email filed permanently in the proper folder. The danger of reading an email in a hurry without addressing it and then forgetting about it is very real, and the tips shared in the video help prevent this. The obsessive compulsive version of it (clean inbox) is to clean out the inbox at least twice a week. In that time frame, very few things run the risk of going unaddressed.

Now I'm feeling really inspired! 🥰 I was always creative when I was younger, yet chronic illness, low mood and a demanding job came along. Having a rest and not forcing productivity I find results in more production. I need sleep and food, skipping meals and fuelling on things that do little for me are playing havoc as the years have gone by. I think the attitude you have helps too, carry yourself with confidence, know / find you interests, being assertive and treating yourself as an equal sets up a good picture to others to respect you, your choices and boundaries. I'm a pushover who needs to be more firm, work pushing overtime and switching up my schedule at short notice, ignoring my protest of being exhausted and reminding me that I don't have children, people I know are aware that I'm 'at home and thus not busy' after work, thus more requests roll in, I must stop with the constant favours, stop feeling guilty and stop letting people talk me around when I have said no and listed a load of reasons as to why, stop explaining myself too. The multitasking is tiresome too and just leads to getting overwhelmed, slowing down and a load of rushed or unfinished work.

I really hear you LilLadyA. I have chronic illness too. I think the turning point came for me when I realised my real enemy was not other people, but myself. I was the one thinking myself 'lazy' and non-productive because I could not match my previous self. I then sought to ease this self belief by trying to be all things to all people and gave my power away by requiring their validation. The very moment I declared to myself , 'The little I can do today is enough' and started treating my needs and limitations with the greatest of respect then the world started doing so too. I now do very little explaining or defending about my decisions and people take me at my word. I begin to enjoy my life and other people so much more now. I wish you all the very best!

@@strawberry1025 thank you so much! I agree, I constantly feel guilty simply for not wanting to do something for someone even though I know I'll do anyway, let others expectations overwhelm me and also get bogged down by how slow I've gotten compared to years back, I felt useless and listened to people telling me what I should be doing that I opened myself up at some point as that 'go to' person who never set boundaries. Definitely need more me time, even just to improve my health as best I can.

I think it is great that you talk about boundaries. I see many productivity tips that only talk about working more and more. But in the end it will only overwhelm you so that you become less efficient or even sick. Sometimes what may seem like the "lazy" alternative is better!

Thank you , beautiful Justine! I am running a CrossFit gym and raise 3 kids. One of my kids is homeschooled , one in daily school and one is still home a preschooler. My husband has a day job and after his work is done he rushes to the gym to help with evening classes or to take my younger two kids off my hand from the gym. Schedule is crazy and I feel exhausted . I run the whole house and kids schedule by myself while my husband is at work. I don't get done all the things I want to or needed to be done. Often I run out of groceries and my home cook meals are getting less and less. We don't like to eat out so that means we often run on one meal a day and drive our kids through fast food. We are NOT please of how things are going but I don't seem to find a way to organize my time better. I found two faults ! 1. My whole family lives away from me and our only ommunication is through social media. I have 9 siblings. I get messages daily from my sister's. I call my mom once a week for about one to two hours. 2. People refuse to visit my website and message me random questions about how I run the gym . I message them back the link to my gym and advise them to visit it first and than get back to me. Then they through yet another question and another one till they get the answers they wanted . They are eating my time. How can I fix this. To reduce the communication with my family since it is a large family I would feel guilty and left out. My other problem with the people is more like you said to learn to say no, I could just message back the link to my website and nothing else. Easy to fix but requires discipline because I keep thinking if I don't answer every question I am rude and can damage my business. I admire you. I wish you all the luck and success . I enjoy ALL your videos. Thank you very much !
