While flying direct, point-to-point services have become more popular in recent years, much of the world is still connected using the hub-and-spoke model of air travel. This means that there is still a very important role for hub airports - especially when it comes to long-distance journeys or connecting far-off places to smaller cities. So which airports are the most connected? In other words, which hubs have the most international flights and destinations, and which facility are you most likely to connect through? Let's find out, with analysis from OAG.

The US has a giant domestic aviation market; the only other country that is even comparable is China, and they still have a large number of their citizens locked down due to COVID. Last I checked, countries like the UAE have almost non-existent domestic markets, relying mostly on international segments. Plus, as mentioned in the video, the US has a less than desirable public transportation network, meaning that many people have no choice, but fly to their destination.

I suggest anyone that has had a problem with this study perform their own research. What many people outside the USA fail to understand is just how BIG the USA domestic market is. Example: American Airlines alone operates over 600+daily flights from its Charlotte, NC Hub! (Even more prior to COVID) Similarly, Charlotte, NC is not a “big city destination” yet you can get to over 100 possible destinations on any given day with less than a 3 hour connection! That’s fucking impressive!

I saw a fair bit of ORD Terminal 2 in the 1960s and 1970s. Last time I saw it was 2017 and it had become a shopping mall with some restaurants, unless I’m remembering wrong. Iconic in my mind, but hardly an architectural landmark, so I can understand why it’s slated for destruction.

Any chance you could do a documentary about Phoenix Sky Harbor? As America's friendliest airport they've always been open and transparent and would probably be very receptive to it. They used to run the Destination: PHX youtube series which is still on here and may provide some ideas for topics
@WillGallagher1

Feel like ORD is well positioned because it serves one of America’s largest metro areas, is a hub for two airlines (United & American), is just far east enough that nonstop service to Europe is common & justifiable for many carriers. Many One World carriers fly there to connect with American, many Star Alliance carriers fly there to connect with United, and even though Delta’s current routes to ORD are lacking in quantity, some Skyteam carriers still fly there because Chicago is a big enough economic hub. I do like the way they are reorganizing the airport so many alliance carrier transfers will be easier. Flights to Asia & South/Central America are definitely not ORD’s strongest suit, but there are direct flights to a lot of large hubs for those places.

Breaking news, American website uses Americas busiest day to have American Airports in top 7, not exactly fair is it, We all know Airports like Dubai, CDG and Heathrow are far more busy than Denver.

are they the most connected or are they the biggest destinations? i think Dubai and Heathrow are very large final destinations but not connections

@@alexselchow I Belive the main business model of emirates is to transit people through dxb, quite a few pax will terminated at Dubai but I believe most are transiting pax. lhr is a different story however.

@wjohn914

I would disagree. LHR can only handle around 650 flights a day. Airports like DEN, ATL, ORD and more with multiple runways can carry that number in a few hours
@atid42

@@alexselchow Dubai is possibly the biggest connection hub in the world in terms of long haul, think about it, in a 20 hour hop you can go from London to Sydney on just 2 planes.

My best connection: BGO, literally the gate right next to arrival. Worst: FCO, bus dropped me off as close to arrivals as possible, and thus resulted in a lot of terminal backtracking. Other connecting airports: OSL, ARN, CPH, and AMS have all been fairly average.

As a Canadian, I make every effort to avoid connecting through Toronto Pearson at all costs. I find it way easier and cheaper to connect through US airports like DEN or DFW as they’re very well organized. US airlines are also way cheaper to fly on too.

ATL and DFW are my two favorites in the US. I also really like DXB, SIN, HKG and the new IST airport are others that I like connecting through.

This methodology is very much questionnable. First of all, identifying one busiest day is very strange as it might be different from regular operations for various reasons. Secondly, limiting connections to 6 hrs is not consistent with common practice. Many itineraries have longer layovers especially when linking remote and less connected airports, so passengers routinely have to wait for 8-9-10 hours, some airlines even offer overnight connections with a hotel included in the price of the ticket.

Call me odd, but my favorite airport is O'Hare. My first connecting flight there was in 1961 when I was 6 years old. The place with its good and bad has held a spot in my list of important places ever since.

I think what counts is not how many connections can be made but how many people made a connection on their busiest day within a 3 month period for the airport. Popularity is not what you can do, but what is the take up. Suggest that this criteria is used and a real objective video is made.

Just saying, Incheon airport is not a good airport to connect. From personal experience, we had to go through another security checkpoint which was a hassle and they literally looked at our passports and asked what we did as a job. Like, we are just transferring and its not that big of a deal.
