In this video they showed a quote from Larry saying that black players were the best and he wanted to go up against the best. Not one black person in this video was offended by Larry saying he wanted a "brother" guarding him. From a very young age Larry used to play street ball with all the older black guys that used to work at the local hotel in his small town. He said they let him play and they treated him good. There is a longer version of that interview with Isiah Thomas where he says Larry wasn't into all that. He just wanted to play against who, in his opinion, were the best players. He needed those challenges to keep it exciting. Larry was a basketball savant and if you watch some other videos you'll hear lots of NBA legends say the same thing. 😊

The whole white guy thing is funny, because the best defenders in the league, black players like Jordan, Pippen, Payton, etc., they couldn’t defend him either. But he loved using that “white guy” line because he was trying to get in their heads, and he absolutely did

Larry knew he was the best white player, which is why he wanted to compete against the best, and Larry said the black guys were the best players.

I sense a bit of an attitude throughout the video which you are more than entitled to. But not once has anybody mentioned Larry using the N-word. Honestly get over it. Larry was a legend, will always been a legend, and his respect for black players is absolutely evident according to those comments he made. It annoys me when people twist things to create divisiveness.

Larry Bird wasn't being racist towards his own race by saying put a black guy to guard him. Larry Bird stated back in the day he used to play basketball with black basketball players cause they were the best and they allowed him to play basketball with him and treated him good. Larry Bird stated black ball players were the best and he wanted to play against the best.

bird wanted the smoke, needed the smoke, without it he had a tendency to get bored because it was just to easy. he would tell the other players and coaches they better put a double team on him

He wasn’t dropping the n word. His respect for the game came from playing with brothers his whole life. They called him black but bleached.

You have a pained look on your face the whole video. How in the world do you equate him feeling disrespected to calling someone the 'N" word. You jumped the shark on that take. Coaches know who their best players are, and Larry knew that of the opposing coaches. He understood they knew they weren't putting their best on him, and he didn't like it. Granted, it wouldn't have made a difference, they couldn't stop him anyway, but he felt they should try. Yes, the Bulls tried Michael on him on a couple of occasions. Larry took him to the post and just bullied him and scored over him. There's a huge difference between 6'6" and 6"10. It always cracks me up when people try to compare their athelticism, but no one remembers, he's 6'10". People didn't hold other 6'10" players to that goofy standard. They switched that up real quick. Why waste your best talent on a guy you can't stop anyway. Best, just don't piss him off. But, WTF! The "N" word? To whom?

Larry enjoyed playing with black players the most because he thought they were the best and he learned from them. He once said, he didn't know why but he had never been aware of color as he grew up. He didn't hate white guys, just thought that it was disrespectful of the other team to put a white guy on him because he wanted to play with the best (and of course to get into their head). If you guarded him well, he would recognize it and was even known to have invited rookie Shawn Kemp to his place in the summer after scoring 50 on him in 3 quarters. He respected Kemp's efforts. He developed a really close friendship with Magic following a commercial they taped at his house. He didn't suffer fools well, but he respected talent. Read his book, "Drive" to get a real understanding of him. He grew up dirt poor and his father (whom he really loved) committed suicide while he was a teenager. His talent and hard work were what made him such a great player, just like others who want it bad enough.

James Worthy said the same thing, that he would rather guard MJ over Bird because Bird was just as dangerous without the ball as he was with it. He then said... "Jordan made you look slow. Bird made you look stupid."
@F1rstWorldNomaD
@F1rstWorldNomaD 2 ай бұрын
The dangerous without the ball comment was Michael Cooper. Its possible that Worthy said it as well(?) as it was very true. But Cooper is the one who said it in the documentary. He also *_explicitly_* said Bird was the hardest guy to defend. Either way, Worthy and Coop are both legendary so, it doesnt really matter

@@F1rstWorldNomaD worthy said it as well, just used different words. Something along the lines of you had to be thinker vs Bird, you couldn't take your eyes off him for a second or he'd be wide open in a flash, setting a pick or grabbing rebounds uncontested.

Larry would be doubled teamed by black players.. still make the shot.. He was a Savant on the court. And the thing is.. back in the day.. you could say stuff about the differences in culture/race.. Not allowed these days.. Total BS to me.. But it is what is in 2024

I can promise you, every white guy ever (except some Laker fans looking for excuses to hate Larry) laughed their a$$es off at those "dont put a white guy on me" comments. We're not ignorant. Black guys were the best back then and we knew that. So did Larry, so did his opposition and so did the oppoaing coach. Complaining he got a white player was funny cuz who the hell complains whebn they get a weak defender on them? In a professional game? Thats just free points. Youd have to be really fakking confident and cocky to point it out, nevermind calling it disrespect 🤣🤣 Crazy funny.

its not offensive to be a white man lol.. just like its not offensive to be a black man. unless you prefer Caucasian or African American. but not everyone fits those categories. ive had ppl tell me "im just black" or im just "white" plenty of times.. some people think saying "mexican" is offensive. lol have you seen mexicans? they are damn proud of BEING mexican..

What u talkin about he pretty much called him the N word,,brothers is took that way ,larry bird said he was white on the outside and black on the inside lol,he respected black players but didn't the white lol on the court larry was black ,but race don't matter these some want keep that goin. Some of my good friends are black and the most beautifully and wonderfully made woman I've ever loved was black ,I see us as all humans and we all bleed red ,racism only really stays alive cause some ppl always want kept it goin by talkin about it ,I know ppl get ignorant but I don't look at color when I'm out dealing with ppl it just doesn't matter to me ppl are ppl ,and those who go around looking its on them usually they have weakness is why they go there its reflection of a personal problem they have
