A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN is such an outstanding film from the young Elia Kazan. The acting is perfection, all the cast, with James Dunn winning the Supporting Oscar and Peggy Ann Garner taking the Juvenlie Oscar. I absolutely feel Peggy gives one of the greatest child performances of all time. Dorothy Maguiire is wonderful as the mother and Joan Blondell in a supporting role plays the Aunt to perfection, a really good Blondell role.

In terms of melancholy X-mas movies, I would humbly also include The Holly and the Ivy (1952) with some great Brit actors - Celia Johnson, Ralph Richardson, a young Denholm Elliot.

I still have to see that one.

And the great Margaret Leighton. I think people forget that Margaret made some excellent films because she did become such an outstanding stage presence. She was way, way before my time, yet I have become an all-consuming cinephile of Old Hollywood and British films.

It,s a Wonderful Life was not a succes at the box office on release. It was considered old fashioned.

I know, but was it considered old fashioned or too grim?

@RobertBellissimoAtTheMovies i think the message of "there,s no place like home and stay in a comfortable rut" to simplify the plot rubbed some critics the wrong way. I,m sure there,s more info on in in Joseph mcbride, s biography.
@RobertBellissimoAtTheMovies6 күн бұрын
@@maartenlemmens8628 yes, that's an oversimplification of the film. It's a very complex movie.
