OHMIGOSH!!!!! This is the one dish my husband ordered from a now closed restaurant. He was so sad. It's been at least 3 years since he had it. I'm going to surprise him with this when he gets back from work out of state. Yaaaaaaayyyy👏👏👏👏Thank youuuu!!!

If you live in down south California, you should take your husband to this Chinese/Khmer restaurant Royal Capital Seafood Restaurant address: 10911 Westminster Ave, Garden Grove, CA 92843. They have the best Beef Lok Lak, House special Lobster ($13.00 lb Live), and their vietnamese sour soup is the best. Every time we go there, those are the 3 main dishes we never missed to order. My husband loves Beef Lok Lak, we have travelled to many countries and cities, he always order Beef Lok Lak but no one makes it good as the Royal Seafood Restaurant.

Hey Marion, I’m hugely late to the party in this but thanks for the representation. Just wanted to say there’s a number of versions but when my dad makes it, he adds fish sauce and some sugar and water to the dipping sauce. This is because the way it’s eaten is you take the lettuce, lay the beef, tomato (and in his version, a bit of fried omelette as well) then wrap it all up and dip in the sauce and just smash it in your mouth 🤣
@BeauBodhi883 ай бұрын
@@Marionskitchen If the beef is thinly sliced mixed with French onions with a lots of sauce placed on a platter with sliced boiled eggs, lettuce and tomatoes, then it’s called “Bistec” which is a Cambodian dish influenced by Beef Stroganoff. These cubed version is Vietnamese.

I totally agree! An/ Or a bunch of butter lettuce leaves to make “tacos” with ( which is what I’m doing as I type 😄), so delicious. Admittedly, I had to make some adjustments ( only because I did not have the patience to go to more than one store ,for driving around SF is not so pleasant when you have a mission to make a dish, and a hunger, after a long work day, to satisfy. I had used soy, teriyaki (for sugar and viscosity, because the store did not have the sweet dark soy, or the oyster sauce for that matter, so I used fish sauce to approximate the flavor bouquet, so to speak) Anyway, with some adjustments and starving while cooking, the steak cubes turned out ridiculously good, thanks to the inspiration and a simple to follow set of preparation steps. 😉

That looks similar to Vietnamese Shaking Beef. It looks delicious and I can see online that Herbies sells Kampot pepper in Australia. Does it make any difference if the pepper in black or red? It looks amazing and I’ll definitely be trying that. 😊
@Marionskitchen5 жыл бұрын
Cathy McCarthy The black Kampot pepper is usually used for this one but I like to experiment with lots of different peppers for this one. So totally give the red one a try...perhaps just taste a red peppercorn first because if it’s much stronger you might want to use less.

Cambodian Lok Lak is supposed to be made with beef cut into strips. Vietnamese Loc Lac is supposed to be diced, you essentially reversed the recipes and cooking. The Vietnamese dish typically has the char and seer of what you made here; your video on Vietnamese Shaking Beef mirrors more accurately what is Cambodian Lok Lak. For someone with such a big channel, this is a big disservice to cook aficionados. A simple google of each dish easily shows this. Sorry for the harsh critique just wanted to highlight for accuracy. This is a great recipe tho, absolutely great for anyone unfamiliar or even familiar with this dish.

My Cambodian mother made this all the time. Growing up in my household, Lok Lak was known amongst my brothers as the "bunless" hamburger or no carb burger lol. The simplicity of the salt, pepper, and lemon juice may seem off-putting to some, but combined with the lettuce wrap of steak/onions/ and tomatoes, you need the acidity to cut through the richness of the steak (whether it's a really fatty steak like rib eye, or the marbling content is phenomenal). I think Lok Lak is definitely a "safe" or "entry" option for people wanting to get involved with Cambodian food and I encourage all those who haven't tried it to do so. Maybe some ya'll will work your way up to eating prahok. Who knows. Overall, I'm glad you put this recipe on Marion. We appreciate you.
