Forestella is a vocal crossover group! They're not a kpop group. They are the winners of JTBC's television program Phantom Singer 2. Their group name is a mixture of "forest" and the Latin/ltalian word "stella", which means star. So Forestella means a forest of stars. Forestella is a quartet of Cho MinGyu, Ko WooRim, Kang HyungHo and Bae DooHoon. Each has distinct tone and style of singing, different charm. Let me introduce each member in detail. Cho MinGyu : * Born in 1990. * classical leggiero tenor, light boyish crystal clear tone. * He majored in vocal music at Seoul National University, Korea's most prestigious university, and even earned a master's degree. Bae DooHoon : * Born in 1986. *Musical actor, 159th King of the Masked Singers, emotion convincer good at R&B, Pop. * He majored in acting at (Korea National University of Arts) the best general art school in Korea. He is a veteran musical actor who has appeared in numerous musical works. In a radio program the leader (Cho MinGyu) revealed it would be around 20 days they didn't meet in the year. Yes all that info is correct hyungho was a chemical engineer,with no formal training when he joined the group. Mingyu had just finished his masters in vocal music,doohoon was a musical actor( he also has an acting degree) and woorim was a vocal music student when he auditioned/joined the group he carried on and even went on to get a masters whilst being in forestella.

I had my English info text about MinGyu, not yet completed infos about DooHoon and WooRim. I'll bring when finished. Cho MinGyu (I'll say MG) is a classical leggiero tenor and the leader of Forestella. In the field of classical vocal, opera singer is considered as the best successful career in Korea as I know. MG also worked as an opera singer in Seoul Metropolitan Opera. (Actually he has unbroken-yet record of the youngest joined member.) He is very talented like to be one of the semifinalists in Montreal Concours. But in an international concours, one of the juries said him that he would not be able to be main role in opera for his unique voice and could get a sub role as the best.. Imagine how he felt! It would be more than a desperation. But he kept finding his way on music and decided to participate in Phantom Singer 2 audition. Not only his musical technique but also his producing talent shined in Phantom Singer 2 show throughout. He has very wide view on music so he could choose great songs for crossover arrangement. Also he was a smart producer who could pick the forte from each member and imaginate whole performance for the team. Any team he joined was called as MG's team. Even he was top elite who walked on the royal path- Seoul Arts High School & Seoul National University & Seoul Metropolitan Opera - he didn't hesitate to pick a foreign Kpop vocal (Sime Kosta) or to give the main part to an amateur rock vocalist (Kang HyungHo). You know, a true tenor, who can sing high note easily, who studied classical vocal for 20 years and has top career on it, is supposed to be full of ego (almost arogant)! But MG is so humble. He always teared up at his rivals' performances and expressed his feeling with detailed praises. He supports other members using himself as a bridge to make a whole performance complete as far HyungHo said at the interview when Forestella was formed as a final team. And this is why MG is the leader even though he is the 3rd in ages from the Forestella. (There's a kind of age-hierarchy in Korean culture tho)

Though Kang Hyungho did not get professional training when he applied to Phantom Singer, he was in an amateur rock band for years, and then after Forestella formed, Mingyu gave him classical singing lessons and then he also learned on his own to fit the soprano role in the group. So he is NOT untrained. He didn't have classical training when the group formed. But that was in 2017 and he has gotten training since :)

As far HyungHo said, he tried it but stopped soon because he couldn't sing the notes he could reach in his style that way. So.. I think he is still "untrained" in a classical vocal way. Apart from that he was already 10 years experienced (amateur) rock vocalist when he auditioned at Phantom Singer 2. It's not so rare that a rock vocalist sings without vocal education.

However I wanna say, he would have been trying his best to sing better. Sometimes, I feel sorry for him when it seems his genius talents overshadow his effort and dedication to music. Not only HH but also other Forestella members dedicated so much sacrificing their personal lives.

@@manaciel no, he is not untrained, because then he wouldn't be able to sing like the way he does now. He uses classical techniques, you can see it in the way he holds his jaw and his upper lip in a "smile" when he produces soprano notes. These ARE classical singing techniques. And he said himself in various interviews that he STUDIED singing after he joined Forestella, he made every effort to improve. I wrote his wikipedia article and read a lot of Korean language interviews at the time.

Kang was ex-chemical engineer, Cho(tenor, leader) and Ko(bass) are opera singers and graduated from the same university, and Bae is a musical actor. Sorry that my last update is so late. I bring the info text about WooRim now. As English is not my first language, tell me if I have any mistake in the text. Ko WooRim is a classical bass classified as basso profondo, which is rare in Asian countries. He majored in classical vocal in SNU, the best conservatory in Korea. He started his carrer as Forestella from his 3rd grader in the university and entered the master course in SNU while active as Forestella. He was one of the semifinalists in the international concours of Toulouse in 2016. (In the concours SNU 4th grader won the Grand-Prix, SNU 3rd grader won the 2nd place, Ko WooRim was a 2nd grader at that time.) He sings good, looks good, cooks good, dances good. He usually tends to be gentle and reserved. However, with his intimate friends like the members of Forestella he shows his hilarious aspect and entertaing talent. The members encouraged him to show it in the broadcast like in the entertaining time of the waiting room of Immortal Songs. He showed the impersonation of Lee SunKyun, a famous Korean actor with deep voice, and Rainism dance quite times there. He said he dreamed to be a comedian when he was a elementary schooler, to be a dancer-singer like RAIN when he was a middleschooler, and feels like his dreams came true halfway for being active as Forestella. He's the youngest who likes to look mature, so cute to see he tries to look cool always. He is the first married man in Forestella. It was one of biggest news of the year, his marriage to Kim Yuna, famous ice skater gold medalist AKA Queen.

Loved your reaction, and Forestella's BoRhap cover is the best! I'd recommend their performances of "Time in a Bottle," "Nella Fantasia," and "Legends Never Die" next, as well as diving into their some of their solo performances: Woorim's "Les Feuilles Mortes" and "Stars" (Les Mis), Hyungho's "Phantom of the Opera" and ""No Time to Die," Mingyu's "Balada Triste de Trompeta" and "Balada para un loco," and Doohoon's "Say Something" and "Lay Me Down."

Thanks for your fantastic reaction to Forestella again! But who the heck first wrote HyungHo as a chemical engineer in that info?! Precisely he majored in chemical engineering (it caused someone think he was an engineer IMO) but he was a research chemist, harder than to be an engineer as a bachelor and his company was Samsung BP Chemical! It's super hard to work in Samsung you know. But what happened was, Samsung sold their chemical industry to Lotte, HyungHo could get his day-offs easilier than under Samsung. He was offered to participate another audition show when he was a Samsung worker, he couldn't make it because he was too busy at that time. The destiny drove him to participate in Phantom Singer 2 audition this way. He has another rocker identity as PITTA (it's a name of a bird with multi-colored feathers. Also it means someone multi-talented) Kang HyungHo has interesting life story. He wanted to sing from his juvenil days but his parents didn't agree him to go to art school. So his music life started since he joined the rock band in the university. Even after graduation he continued the band and won the Grand-Prix in the workers' band contest in Busan. His sensational audition song- the Phantom of the Opera was his killer repertoire. He used to cover MUSE so he developed his falsetto that good. (He has not only very talented voice but also great singing technique.) He was working as a research chemist in Lotte BP Chemical; quite good company providing high salary when he auditioned. As Phantom Singer audition was designed for making a (good-looking) classical crossover quartet like il Divo from Korea, there were bunch of opera singers who majored in classical vocal and well-known musical actors. He was the only office worker who majored in (chemical) engineering in whole participants. But he used to sing as a vocalist in an amateur rock band (the band name was Pitta but it became Pittaband afterwards) in his leisure time. He stole the show singing the Phantom of the Opera duet song by himself. Now his audition clip has more than 3M views in Navercast and got more than 10M views in sum of KZbin videos only from Koreans as JTBC didn't release the video for abroad.. He said he had thought he would be able to quit from the music regretlessly with criticism he would get. But BAAMM! Thanks God he failed to quit from music! He quit from the research chemist job instead. lol He was doing good in his job like to get promoted even while his audition. His company exceptionally offered him an year's leave of absence and he wrote 3 papers on chemical research theme while working (singing) as a member of Forestella. He quit his research chemist job 1 year after the debut as Forestella, in the end of leave of absence period he had. He would have worries and considering about career and steady salary, stable life but finally chose the life of professional musician. I really appreciate his decision from heart as a fan of him, and of Forestella. I'll tell you a long story about the group name Forestella; it's combined words of forest+stella (star in Italian). There are some important TV shows for Forestella. Obviously Phantom Singer 2 would be the 1st one as the audition show was where made Forestella. JTBC designed it to make a crossover quartet like il Divo from Korea. Through that survival audition the participants had solo showcase first and competition like 1 vs 1, duet vs duet, trio round, quartet round with elimination and drafting in between. And there was random quartet round as well. 3 finalists groups competed and Forestella is the winner group in Phantom Singer 2. Through the Phantom Singer 2 audition, MinGyu(I'll say MG) picked WooRim(WR) as his duet partner. They matched vs duet of DooHoon(DH) and Julian Kim (world class opera star who took the protagonista role in Italian opera theater) and won. MG and WR drafted DH as trio members. The first quartet MG leaded was named Forest. And there was random quartet round. MG and HyungHo(HH, Pitta) got to be in the same team by picking same colored balls. HH said in the interview before being fixed the members for final groups that MG was a considering and dedicating leader. HH was the only officeworker in the show and sang a duet song the Phantom of the Opera by himself fantastically at his first appearance on air and got alot of views in Navercast, (a kind of Korean KZbin, he got millions of view there and 3 years later JTBC uploaded his audition clip on KZbin not available for abroad.. although of that it has the most views in all the Phantom Singer clips in KZbin) he was considered as a star of the show. One member of the Forest got eliminated in the random quartet round and HH joined in final group, so they changed the group name into Forestella welcoming a star (HH) from Forest. My info text about Bae DooHoon.. I think he is so unreal to exist for real, like too good to be true. He is handsome, sweet, humble, humorous, talented, a good actor, a semifinalist from Voice Korea 2, and the 159th King of the Masked Singers- the first king from Phantom Singers. He was the student body president in his high school, good at sports, popular among his alumni, suddenly decided to major in acting, prepared for less than 6 months and went Korea National University of Arts (KNUA, top uni for acting major, super hard to go) majoring in acting! But now he is still taking a break from school, not graduated yet. Before Forestella he sang as a guest vocalist in a GugAk(Korean traditional music) group Soriya and Yeonhooae, a fusion GugAk band AUX. While his military service as a Navy PR Petty Officer 3rd Class he participated in the Voice Korea 2 in 2013, went up the semifinal round. His last Voice Korea 2 performance was a famous musical number This is the Moment, it made him debut as a musical actor since then. He has the most experience on stage in Forestella. The only thing I don't like about him is he says sorry about his fault like tiny mistake no one other than DH never noticed. A perfectionist with the highest bar for himself. He is the oldest in Forestella. The members said he's like a mom for them. His bag has everything as far they said. Unlike his gentle handsome look like a Disney prince, he is the most hilarious person in the group. Even his humor code is like granpa's joke lol. (And wasting his acting skills to make fun) I think he dedicated a lot for their strong bond like a family, even stronger than a real family. He was inactive for almost 2 years as a musical actor to concentrate only Forestella work. He was offered to join a big musical Jesus Christ Superstar, but he refused the huge chance for a musical actor. For Forestella's North American concert tour. As far he said Forestella had been meeting together 340/365 days in debut year (2018), never rested 3 days in a row before WooRim's wedding (2022.10). (They had a week rest at that time.)

eh. the Pentatoniix cover of this is better imo. just a preference.

Oh yeah I would say if you only look at Acapella element and musical technicality, Pentatonix’s cover was definitely tops and very unique. On the other hand, Forestella stayed close to the original and killed that operatic part like no other. And the blending of their each unique voices was just amazing. Both their covers were absolute mind blowing!!! I would not say one is better than the other though - each group has their own colour and strength :)
