@LifeOfBurch

@@nopenevergonnahappen-z1p still using em and still loving em! The bushings have worn out much quicker than I’d hoped, but Burly Brand sent me some polyurethane bushings that I’ll be putting in this week actually. I believe they said they plan to switch the new shocks to polyurethane since that’s what they use for the heavier Harley’s anyway…but don’t quote me on that. If your shocks don’t have the poly bushings, it looks like they’re Progressive Suspension 5008-028 bushings.

The thing about shocks is, I would imagine it to be impossible to build them with the dampening that would be ideal for all rider weights and loads, and then there is the matter of trading off comfort for performance. It's one thing to get a comfortable ride over potholed city streets and another to go over bumps on a curve at 80 mph. I can't imagine one setting of preload, compression dampening, or rebound dampening would be equally ideal for both of those situations because they are quite different. Springs, preload adjustment, and dampening, for both compression and rebound all work together, or against each other, which is why I wish every shock company provided an assortment of springs and had dampening adjustments for both compression and rebound. I know that would be more expensive, but I believe it would be worth it. I got a new shock for my bike, and I was told that it would be adjusted for my weight and riding based on the information I gave them. Though it had preload adjustment and rebound adjustment, it had no compression adjustment. I began experimenting with preload and rebound adjustments, and through all of that, where I ended up, was at the same location the shocks came with. I believe that where your shock is adjusted for compression, will also sort of dictate where your other settings will be. If you go rather firm on the compression setting, expect that you will likely be setting the rebound rather firmly also, otherwise it will feel "boingedy" or as if you are "bunny hopping" However if your preload is softer, your other settings will likely change to adapt. What I'm saying is, that it all works together, so you want to have all the options of adjustments you can get, but I consider the foundation of the ride to be the right springs, and enough travel. Without enough travel, you have nothing to work with. Sounds like they got it right. Good choice on shocks.

Hi maybe a bit late, but it's better to torque that bolt only after you remove the jack and land the bike on the ground. It's the same reason you tighten car tire bolts on the ground not in the air.

Looking back it’s funny, but in the moment I was HEATED! 😂 My garage is 20 mins from my house. When the first bolt stripped I had to go home to get the new bolt and a drill to extract the old bolt, then drive back to the garage. Get back to the garage and the drill’s battery dies two seconds later. Go to Home Depot for a new battery, realize they’re $80+, and just go back home for more batteries, then back to the garage. It was a multi-hour chore getting that damn thing out, just for it to happen AGAIN! 😅😭😂 Gotta love bikes man…

Love your channel! Wanted to say that first. Now I have to say that the bolt breaking like that really worries me. Honda has some problem with their parts procurement process, obviously. Either their priorities or wrong headed, or their quality inspection is lacking. Either way, Honda is going to lose their reputation for quality if they don’t get their act together. Combine the bad bolt with a wobbly front end and resulting 100 mph top end limit (the Shadow Phantom 750 will do 110), and you have some questions that need to be answered.

@davidwollpert5276

@@feloniousmonk3049 he said it was from that, but he has indicated that it is still there in later videos. I think it may be an aerodynamic issue with the lightness and slant of the front of the bike. Some kind of front wing might be a solution.

Those 5mm and 6mm bolts should be available at any local hardware store, and for not much money. For bolts that small, it might be just fine to just use your experience and tighten them just "by hand" without a torque wrench.
@jakeosborn517
@jakeosborn517 2 жыл бұрын
Those torque wrench's you have are notorious for being inaccurate. Also when you are done with the tool, you have to set them back to the lowest setting or else they will get even more messed up. Get a electronic torque testing device to see if they are messed up, if so, you can return them if you just bought them.

Hi, no I bought installed YSS adjustable shocks for the rebel 1100, bought them from a supplier in the Netherlands. It's been about a year since I installed it. The channel is On the Rebel 11. The guy on the channel says he's 5'-8", probably around 155lbs. I didn't watch all of his vids on the Ohlins since I already had mine. I do like the yss shocks, but the bike is still a cruiser and if the road is bad your going to feel it regardless of the shocks IMO. Before buying anything I would check if the shocks can be purchased for a lighter weight person. I did not do that when I bought my YSS shocks. I think the higher end shocks do come in different spring weights, good luck. BTW, I have back issues, hence the upgrade. I'm pretty sure my YSS shocks adjustments are not maxed out, except I do have them almost as tall as I can, better for my hips. Good luck!

Welcome to Honda Cheese bolts. Everytime you plan to takea bolt off toss it and replace with new bolts from a bolt shop

Man, I must be lucky so far. The fender bolts and shock bolts were SUPER tight on mine, but they didn't strip for me. I've had the shocks on and off a few times with no issues. Same goes for the fender bolts. I did notice a pretty good amount of rust on the mounts though... did you see anything like that? Did you notice any fitment clearance issues between the swingarm and exhaust? Really looking forward to these shocks, thanks for the update!

I did notice some rust inside the top left mounting point, but all the others were fine. Not sure why it was just that one though? As for clearance, there’s no issues anywhere! Good to go 100%. I clicked the preload up to the second setting and got out for 6 hours of backroads the other day and these things rippp!! Such an improvement in every way!

Little bit of a stupid question, but would these fit onto a rebel 500? And how would I check if shocks fit my bike
@LifeOfBurch
@LifeOfBurch 2 жыл бұрын
They should fit just fine! Someone already put some on their 500, but I’m not sure if they were a direct bolt on or if any modifications were needed. Also not sure if the 500’s shocks are the same length as the 1100 or not. If they’re shorter, then the stilettos would raise the 500 a bit more than my 1100. I’m gonna be putting my stock 1100 suspension on my girlfriend’s 300 soon though, so if those are a direct swap then we’ll know the stilettos are as well!

Hey Burch, I'm bottoming out on my 1100 stock shocks. Wondering if you have any idea how much extra weight it would take to bottom out the Stilettos? I'm 200lb with all my gear on. Would like the extra seat height but considering YSS shocks with a heavier spring but not much more travel or height. Thoughts please.

Add 5 clicks more preload on your rear shocks and it should be in the ball park, less bottoming.

Great video! Would love a shock upgrade. I’ve got a 500 but really don’t want to increase the seat height. The Mustang seat already added about an inch. I’m 5’1 and need every inch that I can get. Any suggestions on shocks?
@LifeOfBurch

Thanks! I think Ohlins makes shocks for the 500, but they’re pricey. I’m going to take my stock shocks and put them in my girlfriend’s Rebel 300, so maybe you could try finding used 1100 shocks once someone upgrades theirs? Should be a direct fit and I’m assuming same height.

Now with all that space under the fender, you could get a gas tank and fender combination made that will hold perhaps two gallons of gas and run a line to the tank, and as long as it is higher than where it enters the main tank gravity can do it's thing. All you need then is turn the valve when your gas light comes on. If you had to, you could always find a ditch to slope the bike to get all the gas into the main tank. I just hate bikes with no fuel range. I need 200 + to be happy. Who wants to visit a gas station every day?
