Another player that should be on here should be Steve Thomas. He played in the 80s and 90s mainly with the Leafs but also with Chicago, Tampa and the Islanders. He scored over 400 goals in his career and was someone that you could always trust in any situation.

I just remembered that Gretzky went undrafted
@danh58103 жыл бұрын
He did, but that is a little unfair given that he went to the WHA before they were absorbed by the NHL.
@orestes08833 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there were definitely some who questioned Gretzky's size and weren't sure he could play at the NHL level, but he for sure would have been drafted had he not signed in the WHL for more money than NHL teams were paying at the time.
@garystaudinger90343 жыл бұрын
He was on a million dollar personal services contract with Nelson Skalbania he was highly regarded but could not play for anyone else. Skalbania sold his contract to his personal friend and fellow WHA owner Peter Pocklington.

That was back when the NHL didn’t sign players as young as Gretzky was. The WHA signed young as they could in order to compete

Tyler Bozak! Criminally underrated, had to play 1C for the Leafs in their dark years. Had he been in his prime during the last 3 seasons with the Leafs he would be considered one of the best 2C/3C players in the league. 434PTS in 740GP and to top it off a Stanley Cup. So happy Bozie got the cup

Bobby Orr was not drafted. Though his track to the NHL is a whole different monster
@darrenmuise45313 жыл бұрын
He was signed out of Minor Hockey in 1962 and the NHL Amateur Draft was only established in 1963. The entry draft as we know it (or close) only came to be in 1979. In Orr's time, teams signed players and assigned them to their own Junior Teams. The Leafs, Red Wings and Canadiens were also pursuing Orr, but the Bruins were up and coming and appealed to Orr (quoted in interviews). It's amazing how scouting and acquiring talent from junior and minor leagues has always been the best way to build teams, however many teams have only caught up to that kind of thinking in the last 10 years.
@darrenmuise45313 жыл бұрын
Also, a 14 year old Orr played junior for the Oshawa Generals after he was signed, I believe the Bruins were 50% owners of that Franchise when it started. He was scouted and acquired very young.

Great video. Tretiak wore #20, not #22. Tretiak, the goalie whisperer, was goalie coach in Chicago for Belfour and Hasek despite not being able to speak English. Funny enough, the Hawks did offer Tretiak to play goalie, but he refused. He also coached Brodeur, and Theodore among others.

I got to see Eddie play up close when he played for the Saginaw Hawks. Later, I got to know him as a customer of mine. Later in life I owned a small equipment rental and service company. I was hired to do the service on Belfour's machine shop "Carman, Inc." in Freeland MI. I dealt mostly with his business partner because he was still playing at the time. In addition to his machine shop he also built custom cars. I still have a large autographed poster in my Garage. Great guy.

Cujo was an absolute god in Edmonton. That Oilers team was pure energy and gave us a reason to love hockey again after our early 90s teams being so awful
@17irod3 жыл бұрын
First of all Belfour wore number 20 not 22 like you said, yes he wore number 20 after Tretiak who is not only his idol but his trainer! Tretiak trained Belfour, Belfour would often stop by Tretiaks goalie hockey school, I remember seeing him two straight years back when I was at his school helping train goalies and my little brother who was one of the promising goalies there who wouldn’t make it to nhl due to injuries!!!
@1bert7193 жыл бұрын
I always thought Ed Belfour benefited from a solid defence in Chicago and Dallas, but when he went to Toronto he proved me wrong even as he aged, I now think he made his defence look better. Cujo never even played AAA hockey, just single A. Great career against all the odds.
@MoneyHoneyBunny2 жыл бұрын
I gotta say, Cujo was 1 of the most popular goalies of all time. League wide, him and Vanbiesbrouck were more popular than Roy and Brodeur ever were. Yet they never won the cup, and its a shame neither are in the hall yet. But based on how insanely popular they were, I think they will be some day, especially Cujo because of his career record.
@ajpdeschenes2 жыл бұрын
Cujo also has an Olympic gold medal (on two Olympic selections, 1998 and 2002). But he only played 1 game during the 2002 Salt Lake City and allowed 5 goals...

@Pensfan59193 жыл бұрын
I always think of Smilin' Joe as the first modern American sharpshooter in the NHL. Him being on the THIRD LINE of those Penguins Cup winning teams in the early 90s really should tell you just how loaded they were. Mullen would've easily been top billing anywhere else, like he was with Calgary.
@LargeBasstafarian2 жыл бұрын
Marty's "deep" playoff run with the Rangers was ended by the Tampa Bay Lightning. In that series, the Rags were on a 5-3 power play, when Marty turned it over at the blue line to a young, under-sized, undrafted player Tyler Johnson, who took to the other end and scored the SH goal. Irony

Geoff Cournall was undrafted. Not a hall of famer, but my favorite player all time. Five 30+ goal seasons with 1,048 games played and 799 points. He could skate, hit, score, and grind. The kind of player every team wants.
@MoneyHoneyBunny2 жыл бұрын
Martin St Louis was the Theoren Fleury (5'6) of his era. Fleury only played 14 seasons and won the cup, was an all star, was very popular, and has over 1000 points, over a PPG. Him not being in the hall is literally only because of his size, because he was hit so much in the rough 89-04 era... that he retired before he could pad his stats like guys like Recchi and Andreychuk and Brind Amour did for examples.
@MickLoud9992 жыл бұрын
My fave player that was drafted but should have gone unnoticed is Patrik Hornqvist. He was drafted LAST in 2005. Only 7 of the over 200 players drafted before him have more career points than he has. He has won the Stanley Cup twice and scored the cup clinching goal for the Pens as well.

@iron60bitch623 жыл бұрын
Interesting observation and no disrespect meant Wayne Gretzky turned out to be the greatest ever on the planet as far as a player why was he so poor as a coach I have my theory but that would be a great topic going forward for a video of players who try to become coaches who were not successful or players who barely got 10 games went on to be great coach
@vanhattfield82922 жыл бұрын
My take on him being a coach is that he was in his own world as a player and was not treated the same or went through the same kinds of hardships most players had to go through, and I that affected his ability to relate to them as a coach. He never had to be a tough guy, fight his own battles or be on the wrong side of a call and although I think that players respect his achievemenmts and recognize him as the goat, he isn't relatable to the average player and that ended up hurting him as a coach.
