Always felt the "Gretzky never being drafted" part is always a cop out because he was already signed by the WHA before he was draft eligible and the NHL had a rule that you couldn't play prior to age 20. So while he wasn't drafted, it's not because NHL teams didn't want him.

At some point there was a stoppage in play behind the net and the mics kicked in. Not only could you see Gerard Gallant yelling at Golmore but you could now here him too. It wasn't that nobody wanted Datsyuk. It was that he played in such a remote part of Russia that very few people knew about him. As it happens the Redwings scout that found Datsyuk wasn't even there to see him specifically. He was so impressed during that game that Datsyuk had the puck on his stick every time he was on the ice he talked him up to the Redwings draft staff. The scout himself almost didn't make it the the game as there was a serious storm just before his flight.

What about Patric Hörnqvist...selected LAST overall (#230) in the 2005 entry draft by the Nashville Predators? So much ink has been spilled about the generational FIRST overall pick of that draft, making it somewhat amusing that Hörnqvist would be a critical participant in 2 Cup runs with Crosby. First and last, united. Poetic, no? Anyway, he was a hell of a steal; not too many players can say that they forged a long NHL career after having been drafted last. Granted, a few players who go undrafted still manage to make it in the NHL, some of them even peaking in the elite range...but it's not so common.
@christopherengel74362 жыл бұрын
Datsyuk was put with Hull to help Hull's game. Zetterberg was also a steal. Lots of Europeans & Russians fell far in the draft for these reasons. Hasek was also pretty unorthodox in his play. Edmonton drafted beyond excellent. You have the greatest player of all time and surround him with Hull of Famers. Gilmour was 5'9" & 160 pounds when he was young. Played like 6'2" & 210 though.

Now the reason WHY the Hawks traded Hasek is it's own video... It was very possible if the Hawks coughed up $5,000,000 then Hasek would have stayed a Hawk - not only that but the Hawks win the Eric Lindros sweepstakes... The truth is that the Hawks could have been a dynasty in the 90's and the only reason why they weren't was because $5 million dollars and a terrible greedy owner. And few even know this... And there is no "if's" that would have happened - I don't know about the dynasty part but Hasek and Lindros absolutely.
