Tony is right again! I had a band in the 90s, weekend warriors. But we had GREAT Tshirts. I was making more money from the shirts than playing the weekend. My pockets were bursting with cash. So my brother and I took a merch stand and set up ON THE SIDEWALK without a permit, to try and cash in. People would look, they would ALMOST buy, but without the band, we didn’t make ONE sale. So live they can see you, feel your vibe, meet you, and might be a little drunk too. And then they want a souvenir from their night. Kaching $$$$$$$

100%! The key with T shirts is that the design has to be so cool that people walking by your merch table just HAVE to have one. I’ve bought tees from bands I don’t love just because they’re cool.

I started busking last month for a lot of these exact reasons - mainly that if I don't play my music in front of people, how could they ever find me?? Its been going really well. Busking is cool because you don't need a whole band to do it, you just figure it out and get out there. Also, one HUGE benefit that you left out - record your performance, make some videos, and toss them up on KZbin, TikTok, Insta, whatever.... Fantastic way to reach a TON of new people and it's easy, fast, and free

it's so true but it's a slow painful process with only between 50 - 150 people at a time. it's important to also figure out how to grab people's attention online..

I got news for you... It starts slow. But the more you do it, the bigger you get, the bigger the numbers get... if you only persevere. Yes, online is important, and it's a whole different game.

@@tonyvv I have news for you too lol. Until you get a good digital/social media game going, no booking agents/venues will be very interested in you. I've been doing this now 12 years. I was progressing well until the pandemic. the pandemic changed everything and I had to start over. It's been major slogging, way slower than before the pandemic. Many people are choosing not to go out because they are so broke and they don't support lower to mid level artists. my advice to anyone doing this is yes to live gigs but dear lord get some live streaming happening and def release singles and try to get your following numbers up esp on Spotify and KZbin. All the grant organizations (at least in Canada) want to see these numbers and they want big numbers. You absolutely cannot do that via live gigs... at best you can get to a place where you can make a part-time living. but until you get the team, you can't go too far. and no one (generally) is interested in looking at an artist until they have big numbers/followers. I could die before this goes anywhere. 🤣

Here’s how it’s done: start with 10. Then 25. Then 50, 80, 150… and after 7 or 8 shows you’re at 300. Patience and perseverance, my friend.

​@@tonyvv I've been playing locally for 7 years now and it's pretty much the same few dozen people coming out to see me each time. Every now and then I meet someone new at a show who says they'll come see me again but it never happens. My scene might just be dead and unsupportive but I have not seen any way to get the type of growth you're describing. Love the videos btw Tony.

@@musicbyhavens If it's the same dozen people over and over... there may be something else going on. Sure, could be your "scene" is dead. But could be other things. Is the music good enough to scale? Are your concerts? Is your marketing? I have found when things aren't working the way I want them to, it helps to start by looking in the mirror and being honest with myself. If the answer to those questions is YES, it's good enough to grow... then it's a matter of figuring out what else needs to be done to get there.

I went to college for music, took music lessons from a young age and have been performing and writing since my youth in all sorts of bands and recording/studio environments during that time. I work at the professional level. I routinely get positive feedback on the strength of my songwriting, singing and guitar playing and have opened for major label acts to great crowd reception. It just hasn't seemed to build up to anything. If you have time and feel inclined, you can see some of my music videos on my channel. I get good online listenership and engagement but that hasn't translated to a growing attendance on my local scene.

@@tonyvv Thanks for the reply, Tony. I'm very open to the idea that there's something wrong with how I'm marketing my music, despite having invested tens of thousands there in various ways. Ask for my music, I've only ever gotten great reception from industry folk and casual listeners alike. I've studied music since a young age and in college and operate at the professional level having been on local TV, radio and other media and I've opened for major label artists. It's hard to be objective, but I can confidently say I've put out high quality songs that were built upon my professional knowledge. Absolutely, but performing live can go against an artist if they don't have their act down or even more importantly Hire a decent sound person and perform to the right audience. Those 3 things are essential to a successful gig that will propel an artist. Coming from a sound engineer with 37 years in the business I can tell you that every successful local artist had live sound engineers. Now I've turned the tables and I am the artist and I keep an eye on who the good ones are. You are on point when you say bands do not repeat their name enough. People who come in late to the show won't know if you only said it once on the first set. That said, promotion needs to be a 360 approach.

You are correct. Your first concert will suck. Luckily, careers are built over years and hundreds of performances. If you pay attention and have a growth mindset you will become a good performer.

We hate playing live -only done it twice but don't play all the instruments at once - now where a bedroom band literally and been top 10 ReverbNation for 6 months in "other" so we do good songs cause we are so different from any band literally 😂 see this was an add for Genetic Throwbacks from Melbourne!!! And watched the video we don't promote cause no cash simple and we wouldn't do justice to them playing live man last time was a serious riot so that put us off it
