Love this. As somebody who didn't grow up in a motorsport family, GT4 was the first thing that gave me enough of an insight into racing and cars that i felt like i could actually appreciate what was happening on-track in the real world; it absolutely helped to get me into racing games and motorsport in general in a massive way.

WRC4 was one of 2 games I got with my PS2 from my parents, the other was NFS Underground. They were also the reason why I got a very basic wheel and pedals the next year, I don’t think I knew back then just how lucky I was! Fast forward 19 years and I got my first ever real sim-rig set up which would’ve probably never happened without those two games and my parents, of course ❤️

Highly recommend trying Gran Turismo 4 on an emulator with a wheel. An emulator allows you to use any wheel instead of 1 of the 3 that were supported by the game and it truly shines with a modern wheel and pedals.

Toca Race Driver 2 is still my favourite game of all time. I loved that era of V8 Supercars and DTM because of that game and still play it. I recently decided to speedrun the career and finished it in just under 6 hours. I wish TRD2 received the tier 1 legendary success that games like GT4 and NFSU2 receive. Same deal with F1 04, it seems to be the forgotten one of the Studio Liverpool era F1 games, 05 and 2006 CE being the best, but I still like 04. Just goes to show how much choice we had back in the 6th gen era of gaming.

It was insane! What made you prefer Toca Race Driver 2 to 3 out of interest? 😊
@andrewpillinger33 ай бұрын
@@TraxionGG I think a mix of a few things, the main one being nostalgia. Toca Race Driver 2 was one of the first racing games I ever played, and I loved that era of V8 Supercars growing up in Australia (my favourite driver was Jason Bright). I know Race Driver 3 has more content and more to do but it had certain events and races that weren't fun at all and there were moments that annoyed me more often than in Race Driver 2, especially as you got later into the game, e.g. Williams F1 or the unlocking of trophies for the bonus series. I have always preferred Race Driver 2’s handling, gameplay, content and career. 3 is still awesome, but if I were to choose one to revisit for hours it'd be Race Driver 2, I just prefer the experience. It was the game that got me into the racing genre of gaming and therefore holds a special place in my heart.

All those games that you mention (with the exception of Richard Burns Rally, which by the way, the game as such was an absolute failure in sales and caused the direct bankruptcy of the company. In large part due to the gigantic amount of piracy that it had, which caused the game was highly modified by the community, leaving the company that made a huge investment to stay in position in a very bad position). GTR2, Race07, GT Legends, are games that come from what I consider the true father of modern simracing F1 Challenge 99-02, these games use the same engine as F1 Challenge 99- 02 only modified by Simbin, Simbin worked for ISI in the development of the artificial intelligence of F1 Challenge 99-02. @@josearevalo8653 ok, the reason Warthog Games went bust wasn't directly caused RBR being a commercial failure, but rather because of getting bought out by the makers of the Gizmondo, who were the ones who ended up going bankrupt. 2004 was a particularly special year for me.. not because i was playing any of these games at the time, but rather because my too-young-to-play 2-year-old self was apparently introduced to motorsport via nascar. that for me really set up the next 2 decades of my life towards the present-day, and shows just how special the entirety of 2004 was in general from an unbiased perspective. i did wind up playing nascar 2005 but not until 2011, and while i don't regard it as highly as a nascar thunder 2004 the simple fact that i still play '05 some 13 years later tells you all you need to know about that game. i really do wish i was old enough to play that game that year & remember it. nascar '05 is the only one out of the list i've played but the ridiculous amount of titles i recognize should indicate just how incredible the year was for racing games. i mean, more generational releases came out in '04 than they have in this decade so far probably. the early-mid 2000s simply were just built different.

Burnout 3, RalliSport Challenge 2, TOCA Race Driver 2, RBR, WRC 4... Need I say more? 2004 is definitely the greatest ever year for racing games. Belta after belta! Also, thanks to Insignia (a free replacement service for Original Xbox Live), the Multiplayer and Leaderboards for RalliSport Challenge 2 and TOCA Race Driver 2 are now back up and running! RBR is back too, but that only had Leaderboards, no Multiplayer. :)

Great vid. However not the first Scotsman I've heard refer to the Game Boy "Advanced".

you should do a video on Enthusia which was going to compete against GT4 but died off due to the lack of marketing, it had an amazing physics engine.

Why does everyone say this about enthusia? I hated the driving in that game, the physics were awful in my opinion. I spent a long time hunting that game down only to be so disapointed. I went back to it over and over again and will probably give it another try after this comment, but I dunno man.

@_justtoomanygames_8857 i don't know about you, but when i had this game it was a ton of fun, i remember how realistic the sand physics were, and how sometimes your car would get stuck if you go over light sand on the side of the track.

I'm 50 so I experienced this all as an adult with money to burn (the economy was much better back then). TOCA or V8 supercars as it was named here was the birth of league racing for me.. when ever I wasn't working, fornicating or sleeping I was on Toca practising. I've told people that the past few years have been very dry for gaming in general and I'm told I'm wrong. But man the early 2000s every month there was a banger coming out across multiple genres.

i made a series of videos about every year on racing genre… and the best was 1998 obviously. 2000 was very bold also, then 1997, 1999…. 2003-2004 were not bad but the genre changed already, much less of new ideas, copy pasting… Sure there were some great games such as SLRR, WR, Flatout, Adrenalin Extreme Show, MK2, RBR, GTR, LFS but it’s nothing compared to masterpieces of 1997-2000. NFS 3-5, Test Drive 4-5, TD Off-road 2-3, Midtown Madness 1-2, Moto Racer 1-2, Driver, Cabellas 4x4, Screamer 4x4, Insane, Motorhead, Dethkarz, Trickstyle, Sports Car GT, GPL, Viper Racing, F1 by EA, NASCAR racing, NICE 2, MSR, TXR, RUSH, POD, Butnout Drag racing, SBK 2000, Mercedes Truck Racing, Road Wars, Beetle Crazy Cup, CART, Monaco GP etc etc… THAT was the best era. Oh sorry, console gamers missed almost all of that. then were quite weak 2005-2006 and then the DEAD of racing games forever ( till today). I’m talking about arcades. The sims were at its best at 2003-2007… F1 Challenge 99-02, GTR 2, GT Legends, LFS S2 and of course, the king of sims, rFactor.
