I stay in Cape Town and it is common knowledge to every single person who stays here of where not to go, especially at night. The cab driver would've been wary to take them to such a place unless there was something bigger than his normal cab fee in it for him. That Shrien guy is definitely guilty and there is a lot of evidence that supports this claim.

The husband got away with murder. There are so many pieces of evidence suggesting he hired them to kill his wife. Sure there could have been discrepancies in the hijackers and the taxi drivers story but there were also discrepancies in the husbands were there not? The husband meeting up with the taxi driver in the hotel, the taxi driver leaving the hotel with an envelope, the husband looking at the cctv camera (just as the taxi driver stated happened when he pointed out to the husband there were cameras), the fact that the driver and the husband were texting each other while they were in the car together, the fact that it is very bizarre for them to have left the safe hotel resort to go explore a shady part of town in the middle of the night, the fact that all 3 men pointed to the husband and their stories matched with one another’s, the fact that the husband lied about the ring he said he gave to the hijackers but it was actually in the car, the fact that the husband claimed the hijackers wanted the valuables and the car but yet they left the car on the side of the road, also why would the men kidnap the wife if they got what they wanted already because it was pointed out that she was not sexually assaulted so it wasn’t about that either, the fact that the wife’s friends said she was very unhappy in the marriage and had texts to prove she said those things and she said that her husband treated her badly, the fact that the husband showed no interest in his wife’s funeral arrangements or speaking to her family, the fact that he was quick to move on to new relationships when he returned to London, the fact that he showed no signs of sadness on those recordings after his wife was killed….the list goes on and on and some people are really going to tell me this man is innocent or that there isn’t enough evidence to prove that he is guilty of the murder of his wife…I really don’t know how many more red flags you need.

There was a doc about this story a while back (sorry can't recall which tv show did the doc) but they went over messages the victim shared with her friends about her husbands concerning behavior. I live in SA and I remember the day this case broke. My cleaning lady and I were standing in the kitchen listening to the radio. When they said that Anni wasn't raped and that the car was found, we turned to each-other and said, "this doesn't make sense, what was the motive?". It just didn't fit the profile of a typical SA crime and everyone here believes he was behind it.

If I may, I’d like to include my two cents on this case. I’m South African and grew up hearing about it occasionally. There were a few things that Mike did not share in the video that I would like to bring to light. Thomas and Calvin Mollett are brothers, they are also forensic investigators and authors. They have successfully proven and found evidence in other gruesome South African murders, such as the case of Reeva Steenkamp, girlfriend of Oscar Pistorius and Inge Lotz and Susan Rode. They focused heavily on Anni’s case and have even written a book about it now, where they go into more detail about what they’ve gathered. It’s titled The Bloodied Bride - Did Shrien Deewani get away with murder? These are some statements according to the two brothers: “ - the biggest mistake police made was letting Shrien leave the country. He was there that night and as a witness at least should have stayed to assist the police with their investigation.” They explained that it not have been a botched robbery, due to the fact that Tonga could not have had the foresight and information to plan the ‘robbery’ at a specific spot in Gugulethu, unless he’d already had the information from the groom. “Shrien could have chosen to dine in Hout Bay, which would not have taken them on the N2 and past Gugulethu.” Meaning that he could have chosen to dine closer to the hotel, instead of going on a highway and getting to the more dangerous areas. The most jarring evidence though was something that the Mollett’s found. It’s a transcription of a meeting that Shrien had with Anni’s family, when he returned to the UK. It was secretly recorded by Anni’s cousin, Sneha Mashru. He told his in-laws that Tonga had left immediately after dropping them off at the hotel, when in reality, he’d spent 10 minutes in the car with Tonga alone, while Anni checked in. Supposedly, Shrien had also withdrawn a large amount of cash to pay for a “surprise helicopter ride.” He didn’t mention this at all to his in-laws. It was revealed in court, but not really focused on. The brothers also mention, “He was there that night when his wife was killed, but he never testified. So this is an effort to distil and deduce from his various versions, what the real story is behind the death of Anni Deewani.” If I may add my own opinion to this. Almost everyone in South Africa agrees that Shrien was the perpetrator. Unfortunately, in Indian communities it’s easier to be a widower than a divorcee. He saw an out and he took it. South African hijackings are common and are no joking matter. If there ever has to be one, the hijackers will never kill one person and let the other go. Secondly, if a car has been stolen or hijacked here, it’s almost guaranteed that it’s never coming back. Cars can be stripped clean within an hour or two. It’s heartbreaking to know that Anni not only passed away, but that her last moments were probably spent panicking and fearing for her life. May she rest in peace. Stay safe y’all.

Love your videos Mike, but jeeze your judgements on this one are OFF. Coming from an Indian culture, where marriage and honour to tradition are held in high regard - and homosexuality certainly isn't, who knows what cultural pressures this man was under and what resentments he may have harboured towards his wife. Another thing to note: a lot of indian families deny their children of inheritance money, if they don't conform to tradition, which might explain why he agreed to marry his wife in the first place, but wanted out. Plus there are too many things in this case that do NOT make sense or add up, for him to be innocent. I'd say he was a calculating, self-serving narcisist, who led a double life. He planned his wife's murder, to get out of a marriage he didn't want to be in, but which he may have financially benefited from, while maintaining the respect of his family.. that he otherwise wouldn't have gotten, had he just divorced her or gone on to lead a marriageless, homosexual life, that he secretly desired. Im from Cape Town, when this story broke - we all knew immediately that something wasn't right. SA might have a high crime rate but kidnappings and ransoms are rare - the fact that they only took her and not him send huge red flags. And NO ONE would go do a township tour at night, let's not sugar coat it, it is what it is - as beautiful as Cape Town is there are many dangerous areas including Townships and the Cape Flats even more so for a tourist, you stick out like a sore thumb. He definitely killed her and I suspect it was due to his sexuality. He would rather be the grieving widower , not be forced to marry again and then can have his secret double life. It's so disgusting how he was able to evade justice. I feel so sorry for Annie's parents but he will get what he deserves one day.

I think you got this one wrong Mike. I was *REALLY* surprised to hear you say he had nothing to do with it! Texting each other in the car around Anni. The car being left & not chopped PDQ. Him saving her very expensive ring and a myriad other things. He got away with murder because he managed to stretch out extradition for four years. I can't remember what i did last month accurately & if you understand a little about how human memory works then the fact that these people's memories diverged and fractured in four years isn't surprising. It's these divergences & fractures that his defence team leveraged to, essentially, get him off on a technicality. Leaving him free to run back to Randy Ron but with his Hindu credentials unsullied. That poor woman. Even her death was a sham. She deserved better.

There is only evidence that the husband was dealing with the driver over some arrangement or affair, but it was never proved to be about the murder of his wife. He may have been trying to set up an underhand business deal, perhaps drug-related, that he organised the honeymoon around, which went wrong and ended up unintentionally getting his wife killed.

@@ozosmanlitorunu I think you missed the point. The evidence didn't clearly show that he was guilty, so just assuming his guilt "because I can't see any other way" would be unjust and inhumane. If we want to live in a world where innocent people aren't convicted of crimes they didn't commit, we can't be putting people in prison just because we think they are guilty or because it seems to be the only explanation. It needs to be proven beyond any doubt because things are not always as they first seem. It's a sad thing that sometimes guilty people go free, but it's even sadder when an innocent person has to go to prison. "It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer" as Sir William Blackstone stated back in 1760's.

Exactly! The fighting between the 2 of them was ongoing from the time they got there. I watched a Dateline or First 48 hrs when this murder 1st happened and they showed all the text messages for Anni to her family and she's not wanting to do this anymore. She's ready to come home and wishes she'd never went through with the marriage. THEY text with Anni and tell her to stick it out and keep trying since this is all new to both of them. It seems to me that Anni told them that he'd not have sex with her and wasn't really into romantically touching her. It's been years since I watched it but I think it's correct. I'm going to try to find the Dateline or First 48 and see if that statement is correct.

@softmoon I think some people are giving Shrien Dewani the benefit of the doubt because he was outed. However, just because the husband shouldn't be thrown under the bus simply because of his sexuality doesn't mean his innocent either. There are a lot of unanswered question that don't make sense. Like what were they doing at a dangerous part of town, why did they take the wife but not the husband, why did they leave the car. None of it makes sense and the police really should have done a better job confirming the confession of other conspirators rather than just take their word for it.

Living in SA for 14 years and during the time this took place , I know for a fact the hotel staff would of told these people not to go with a random taxi driver or some guide to tour the city, especially a high class hotel...it’s well known that SA is not a safe place for naive tourists who don’t know the danger of taking such actions, this guy is either a complete moron, which I doubt 🤔 or he’s guilty as hell. Trust me when I say this, their are plenty of people in SA who who do a murder for the right money, so to ask a random guy to do this might not be as far fetched as you think...he spent far to much time meeting with some random taxi driver when a phone call could of been enough , most South Africans thought he guilty because they know how things work, he definitely got away with it .🤷

I disagree with Mike and do believe the husband had everything to do with Anni's murder, as there's simply too many odd actions on the part of Shrien. However, I also understand the verdict of the trial because you need to be certain of his part in the plot, and because of the witnesses' poor account of the events, this saddly couldn't be established beyond a shadow of a doubt, and there should be no room for public opinion and just feelings of odd behaviour in making such a decision. If we had the text messages shared between Shrien and the taxi driver while together in the car with Anni there, this could really elucidate the whole thing. I wonder why these couldn't be retrieved.

Pretty interesting thread on this one. Especially the South African take on it. I'm from Bristol, UK, his home town so we had endless local news coverage, mainly about his 4 year fight to escape extradition by reason of insanity. Of him shuffling about with his head down, sockless feet shoved into unlaced shoes, speaking only in mumbles, it was a fine performance worthy of RADA. We also saw texts by her to her sister actually on the honeymoon saying how unhappy she was and we were shown CCTV footage of them arguing together with her in floods of tears. I don't care how sorry people feel about his cultural predicament with regards to his sexuality : the bottom line is SHE is the victim, not him. He's guilty as hell imo.

@@courtney7027 4-5 years later? I'm not surprised, I built a cell sms system that logs everything but it is purged regularly by the IT guys when they need the diskspace. Also, there are privacy laws at play, I don't know what they are in ZA but I'm sure they also have laws for that. Plus I'd assume they chucked the phones after the deed in which case options become limited much faster, if you have the tower logs you can see that there was traffic but not the content as towers don't log that, operators do but for a limited time only.

I’m surprised we didn’t see the life insurance dance in this one, quite frankly! Any real man would have refused to get out of the car without his wife. He’d have insisted that she be let go first. Also, why hide the ring if the car is headed for the chop shop - as they were basically told. He knew that he was going to get that ring back when the car was found. He knew that this was just part of the plan! I actually wouldn’t be surprised if he got most of the jewelry, etc back before he left the country. After all, there was no mention of it being found on or at the home of any of the defendants. Nor did they say they found it in a pawn shop or the like. If they had kept the jewelry, they certainly wouldn’t have needed to be paid on top of that! As for not being able to remember details - the trial was four years after the fact. Gaps in memory are to be expected. That’s one good reason to delay the trial right there - and delay it he did! An innocent man , one would have thought, would have been eager to clear his name, instead of having it repeatedly dragged through the mud!! There were other things that triggered my suspicions as well, but I thought it was obvious from the start.

My thought was it was a framing attempt. "No you dont have to pay me now, I'll get it from you later", ask him if there are cameras in his hotel, he looks around and says yes. So they figure, let's show up and make it look like he paid us for a murder, when he's just paying for the driving. Farfetched? Yeah. However, I was on the same track of thinking as Mike from the start. You ask the first taxi driver you meet for a hitman? He has money, he has connections, that's the best method to find a hitman? I still believe Shrien Dewani got away with murder. It is understandable that the witnesses like Zola Tonga were unreliable. That's because they are career criminals who always tell lies. That's their default position in self-preservation. The prosecution and the judge should've taken that into consideration and tried the case purely on circumstantial evidence and motive. You only have to look at Shrien Dewani's face during the wedding ceremony, like he was rolling his eyes inwardly and saying to himself, "how can I get out of this?" The text messages Annie sent to her friends coroborates the theory that they were a mismatched pair, but their cultural impositions forced them to make a go of a bad marriage. Shrien Dewani got away with murder. Why were he and Zola Tonga texting each other during the car ride? Why were they going to such dangerous parts of the city during that night? The fact that Shrien removed Annie's expensive engagement ring and hid it says much. He knew he'd recover it later. Annie was not sexually assaulted, meaning that the motive for her abduction was murder or robbery. If a wealthy looking couple; a man and a woman are out enjoying themselves, usually the man has the more expensive items on himself; including credit cards and money. Why did they choose to ok instead take Annie? Why did Shrien and Zola Tonga "not meet up" immediately after both of them had been unceremoniously ejected out of the vehicle, when they knew that Annie, the only woman with them was in danger? Why? Because they met and rehearsed their stories that night as she was being killed. Who knows if Shrien took part in the murder? This is a massive miscarriage of justice and I hope that Annie's family gets justice one day, for the loss of their beautiful daughter.

On the night of the kidnapping, it is possible that Anni's life could have been SAVED had Shrien Dewani reported to police that it was only at the taxi driver's urging that they had travelled into the No-Go Zone. Instead, he BLAMED ANNI for their ride into the township. I believe the reason he did do is because Tongo the taxi driver was acting on Dewani's orders to kidnap and murder Anni. So the fact of the matter is Dewani had NO INTENTION of trying to save her life. She did not say that he wasn't guilty, she made very clear that even the family of the victim and the public opinion believe in his guilt, she just CAN'T let stuff like that take away the fact that there was no hard evidence and the circumstantial "evidence" was just in no reasonable way enough to prove him guilty. She made clear that her job includes the hard fact that even her personal opinion can't play a role in the verdict. Judges with a spine like that are really rare and I would be pride of every single one like that in my own country. Justice is not listening to the public and even if that is hard to swallow.. it isn't even the question if someone COMMITTED a crime but if it is possible to prove that. Judges who put away people for crimes with so little evidence scare me far more than any judge that is ready to accept that securing right as best as you can so innocent ones don't end up behind bars can mean that a guilty one walks because there is just not enough evidence. I don't know if the husband was involved but I agree that they just failed to PROVE that he did. Crime is everywhere in the world.. that scares me less then the possibility to end up behind bars because I am the suspect the public opinion calls guilty and judges and juries that can't even think of going against this opinion.

I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how several things used as evidence in this could just be ignored to the point of a judge just throwing the whole case out the window. Sometimes what may seem like minor details end up (or SHOULD end up) being HUGE, especially when there is not a reasonable logical explanation for them. It doesn't make sense to me for it to be necessary to go behind closed doors and away from any cameras for him to hand the driver an envelope with money in it for simply driving them around when he obviously already has it in his hands at that moment. I also find it impossible to believe that there could be a reasonable explanation for 2 men in the same car to text instead of speaking to each other when the only other person in the car is the victim who just happened to be murdered that VERY NIGHT. Also, the text from the victim to her friend stating that they were already fighting and she already regrets getting married when shes still on her freakin honeymoon speaks VOLUMES louder than some of the reasons the judge used for letting this man get away with murder. I'll end with this one but there are MANY more things thjat make it impossible for me to believe that this man didn't just get away with murder. Highjackers and killers do NOT kill one witness and just let the other walk away. They either are not willing to actually take a life to get what they want and would put BOTH of them out, or could care less and kill both to eliminate any witnesses. I CANNOT believe that anyone with half a brain, much less a JUDGE could actually just ignore MANY things that just don't make logical sense, especially when it involves a beautiful young woman being robbed of the rest of her life. Even though the killers apparently lied and changed stories trying to protect their own selves, that does NOT change the other things that were used as COMPELLING evidence of the husbands guilt. I just hope that the fact that the judge dismissed this case instead of him being found not guil;ty by a jury will mean that he can legally be charged again if and when MORE evidence is discovered. I almost wish I hadnt even watched this video after finding out he walked free My heart breaks for the victims brother and parents whose lives were already ruined by losing her, but then to have to watch the person who is ultimately responsible for her death to walk free is a pain I can't even imagine.

This is why people don't like lawyers - twisting the system and the procedure so disable evidence which would directly effect the outcome of guilt or innocence. the state/crown has UNLIMITED resources. They can spend 1 000 000's on experts,dna, etc They can work 1000's of hours on a case + the media+the police etc all working for them. to screw people who can't even pay for a proper defence everyday .. The conviction rates are insane highly in most western countries. .... thats why there's so many legal rights to try a midgate the overwhelming power of the state.. A defence lawyer has the entire deck stacked against them with almost no funding, so if the defence works the system once in while. You shouldn't care ( your the average citizen, you should be pro defendant in general. Innocent until proven guilty and pro blackstone's formulation.. ''I'd see 9 guilty men go free before i'd send a innocent man to jail'' ) the crown works the system to screw people everyday.. Seriously if the state ever sets sights on someone you love. You'll see how much overwhelming power they have compare to someone who has to pay million dollars just get a okay murder defence. The State essentially does the same thing except in a different way, they're often extremely disingenuous with the context of evidence, they bend reality and time frames to fit their mold, they pretend coincidences don't exist even though they happen constantly to us in everyday life and as the poster above said they have virtually limitless resources.

@@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj If you're familiar with this case, though, the family was wealthy enough to basically hire the two most experienced, clever defense lawyers in South Africa. I'm not saying everyone shouldn't have a good defense--they should--but the South Africans accused didn't have fancy lawyers, and now one is dead and the others are in jail (except for the one guy the cops gave immunity to for telling on the others). And they managed to delay his extradition to South Africa for YEARS.

Mike, I was just talking about this case the other day. I think you got this wrong. The husband ordered the hit and hence him netting the driver in places where there weren’t cameras, leaving the scene so soon, and delaying justice. Little pansy. I hope he has an awful life. He could’ve just said broken off the engagement. I wish you would’ve covered the a few of the witnesses. They solidified it for me. May he rot in hell. I felt awful for her family

@@celtasnake The Judge basically said that the charges against him were dropped due to the fact that there wasn't enough direct evidence to support his being involved in her murder. In other words, there wasn't enough evidence to connect him to her murder to have even have brought charges against him to arrest him to start with. That doesn't mean that he was found innocent beyond a reasonable doubt. There's a HUGE difference between those two things.

IMO that's actually pretty much the same thing (though still support your point), as in both instances, there isn't enough evidence to convict, basically. Well said! Also, hijacking a mom-van for the car, is not really a great MO for the criminals. These guys were not career killers (maybe lesser crimes based on their records) but if they were, they would kill you for small change, and not let a witness go. And never risk themselves being identified and caught. The judge dismissed the perpetrators in the case for inconsequent testimonies but let Shrien go with the benefit of the doubt after his holey testimony?

@@elmariekotze5379 I believe the judge was ‘paid off’ . The judge didn’t even let the Prosecutor speak at times . He wasn’t allowed to present his case properly . She was also constantly telling him off . In contrast Defence Counsel was allowed to say whatever he wanted and she was very nice to him . The blatant disregard for justice was shocking . The SA legal system didn’t give two hoots that the case was being televised world wide and people could see the injustice .

That's a very good point. Also, usually when someone is making a plea deal they flip on a co-conspirator who is already in custody, or at the very least someone the police have their eye on. Because a plea deal is only any good if you offer up something worthwhile. If you just make shit up, the police and the court are going to know and come down even harder on you because voiding a plea is just about the stupidest thing you can do. You'll just get extra charges of perjury, contempt of court and perverting the course of justice piled on top of you, putting you in an even worse situation than you started out with.

I remember there was an article years ago that alleged "from a source" that Shrien purposely chose to honeymoon in South Africa BECAUSE of the high crime rate and he'd been planning this hit since their wedding. As someone who is queer, and been outed: Yea, it frikken sucks BUUUUUT f**k Shrien! He totally did it and I don't get how ANYONE doesn't see that. The whole stealing the car but then leaving it on the side of the road is the biggest red flag. It SUPER easy to strip a car for parts in SA and disable its tracker, so if the guys really wanted to just hijack them, then they would've gotten rid of the car as well.

All along it turned on what (Zola) Tongo was going to say, and his evidence was of a very poor quality to the point laughable. The one big detail hardly anyone ever mentions and over looks is the falsified reports & falsified affidavits submitted to court in favor of Tonga version of events. If he's so guilty why did the government go to such lengths to submit false affidavits to secure a win but still lost? Read the court transcripts., no media outlet printed that out... There's nothing to agree with. He can't just say they're guilty when a court of law has found them not guilty. There's suspicious circumstances and questions that remained unanswered but definitely not enough to convict someone of murder. If you lower the burden of proof a lot of innocent people will inevitably go to jail. That's why it has to be guilty beyond doubt.

I researched this case not long after it happened. There is so much more to it and Mike can't possibly sum it all up in half an hour. I do recall there were suspicions Shrien had been in contact with the South Africans before the wedding even took place. Anni was desperately unhappy and there were dozens more texts to friends about the relationship and how horrible Shrien was being to her. I suspect Anni had an inkling about Shrien's sexuality before the wedding and was going to use that as a reason to get the marriage annulled. He began living with a muscled dom guy less than 4 years after he was cleared, in a £3.5 million apartment in London.
