This is the most common mistake that new musicians make in the studio. It can totally change the impact of any song. And it has nothing to do with mics.

Very nice advice ! I didn't know that 2 bpm more or less can change everything for a singer point of view

For a few of my songs, the intro, verse, chorus, and bridge all sounded (felt) better at slightly different tempos from each other - hence a tempo map can be a good tool. It's better to figure this stuff (tempo and key) out early on in the recording process !

I've had to tear down entire sessions and rebuild in different keys and/or tempos. It's a real drag, but better than the alternative of trying to make the current version work at all costs.

If you care about the songs, you are doing the right thing! This is why I still believe in preproduction demos, even in the DAW and home studio age. Thanks for the great and relatable comment :-) -Justin

The Beatles did that with Strawberry Fields. Different tempo and key for version 1 to version 2. They released version 2 as the official version but version 1 eventually got released on the Anthology album. I like both versions and both versions work but at the time they went with version 2.

We are still discussing making it happen, but he was very interested in it. I'll bring up your song request. But he had proposed creating a new production from scratch and filming it to show his complete process from start to finish, as he actually mixes *while he is recording*. There's also the factor of needing the artist to sign off on the usage. We'll talk about it and see what we can make happen! Very best, Justin

That's not the number 1 mistake. That's clearly a mistake most professionals make over and over again. It's a sophisticated mistake. Not a basic common mistake. You write a song, you play it etc... It takes a whole lot of diligence to test it out in another key or bpm so on and so on. I remember Sheryl Crow talking about this saying her producer suggested to re-record a song on a different key. Nothing amateur about that. It can be a lot of work. When you're amateur you do the best you can with what you have. The biggest mistake musician make in the studio is simple. Lack of preparation. Talking about rehearsal.

I’m not sure we disagree so much. But maybe a better phrase would have been the “most common” mistake, rather than “the biggest”. The incredibly common mistake mentioned here however is *not trying alternate keys and tempos*. Trying out alternate keys and tempos as you’ve described here is doing it RIGHT! :-) Even new artists who are reasonably well prepared and well rehearsed will still make this mistake… Not to mention the artists who aren’t!. This is why it is arguably the most common. I hope you’ll join me in advocating for this. If a new artist took this advice and got to the point where they were trying out alternate tempos and keys in advance of the session, they’d be pretty darn well prepared indeed! To clarify: The common mistake that a new artist or new producer would make is to NOT try Re-recording the song in another key when things aren’t working, as Sheryl Crow’s experienced producer recommended. Her producer suggesting this means that he’s following the exact recommendation at the heart of this video, NOT that he’s making the mistake! :-) Ideally, this kind of thing happens at the preproduction demo recording stage (and I wouldn’t be surprised if it did in this specific story.) But even if it happens after the preproduction stage, that’s still exactly the point and recommendation of the video: If things aren’t working, adjusting keys and tempos is powerful, and inexperienced artists and producers are unlikely to do it until they discover just how powerful it can be. At the risk of repeating myself: experienced producers and artists trying new keys and tempos in the studio is not the mistake mentioned in this video… rather, it’s exactly the behavior I’m trying to recommend!! :-) Hope that helps make sense of it, Justin
