I think Jennie specifically talked about the experience of seeing girls she trained with be eliminated or having to walk them to the door. Gathering from the previous YG survival shows, it’s so sad when a trainee gets eliminated especially one that doesn’t “fit” the group’s image.
@nrmnnk40572 жыл бұрын
I agree with your question. it was initially talked about in the Netflix, Blackpink Light up the sky documentary. Jennie said at 17 :45 "Its sad to say, the very first group of people that trained with me, none of them are here with me right now." So it would not only be Lisa to pose this idea, Jennie would be the backbone of the whole story. But the topic has just scratched the surface, and more detail would be nice to hear. maybe even some after thoughts of the girls whom left before and after BlackPink was debute. Jisoo mentioned at 51 :35 that there were 20-30 trainees there, so there has to be a lot of crazy stories to be told. good and bad for sure.

With regard to pre-debut fame, it was actually Jennie and Jisoo who were fully revealed to the public, not Jennie and Rosé. Jennie's face and name were revealed early on. She also performed on national TV as a featured singer in G Dragon's song "Black" and a short while later was featured as a rapper on Lee Hi's "Special" track. Jennie also acted/appeared in G Dragon's "That XX" music video. Before debut, Jisoo's face and name were revealed and she also acted/appeared in music videos, including "I'm Different" (Hi-Suhyun feat. Bobby). Jisoo also appeared/acted in Epik High's "Spoiler" music video in 2014. Everybody knew who she was and knew her name long before Blackpink debuted. Jennie and Jisoo already had their own fans before debut. Rosé and Lisa are the two who were mostly unknown before the group debuted. Rosé was a featured singer in G Dragon's "Without You" (결국) song. BUT her face and name were not revealed or confirmed and she was literally credited on the song as a question mark (?). There were some rumors about who she was and her name was circulated at the rumor level, but nothing was known for certain until after BP debuted. (When G Dragon performed the song in concerts, Rosé did not perform. Other already-debuted artists like Lee Hi and Suhyun performed Rosé's parts in GD concerts. ) Similarly, Lisa's identity remained a mystery until BP debuted. She had appeared very briefly as a dancer in a Taeyang M/V ("Ringa Linga" IIRC), but she was not identified or named or spotlighted in any way. (Her appearance in that video only really became known after BP debuted and her face is never shown very clearly in the music video anyway.) In 2012, YG released a "Who's That Girl" video clip that showed some amazing dancing by an unnamed girl. Her picture was shown in the video thumbnail, but the information lines just showed question marks for things like "name: ?" and "nationality: ?" Who she was remained a mystery until the group debuted in 2016.

This always made me curious and made me ask what if Blackpink were 9 instead of 4 but then I came to the realization that it wouldn't be Blackpink at all if the final lineup wasn't what it ended up being with just Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. The Blackpink we know and love wouldn't exist. The main thing that makes Blackpink Blackpink is the fact that each member is very clearly different and can stand on their own and they shine as a group as much as individuals - something that is basically impossible to happen to the BP degree if they had a lot of members - voices would get mixed, it would be a mess most of the time, each member would barely have any individual singing time, etc. On top of that, I feel like all 4 girls together encapsulate everything that is there to have in k-pop and any additional members would either be filler or just add more of the same characteristics. If you look at the rapper line and the vocal line in BP, each of them is different in their own category. While both Lisa and Jennie rap, their rap styles are completely different. While both Rosé and Jisoo have beautiful voices, their vocal tone and range are in the opposite ends of the spectrum with Rosé having a higher pitch and higher range and Jisoo having a soothing lower tone and able to hit lower notes comfortably. It's the different and contrasting dynamics that make Blackpink who they are and if you add more members, the likelihood is that that dynamic contrast would fade into a gradient which would temper down significantly the dynamic sound of Blackpink.

For some people, I sometimes think they probably are better off not becoming idols. If being a successful idol is someone's first and basically only dream and goal, then I guess that's ideal for them. But for many of them, I think they don't really understand what they're giving up for that dream until it's too late. When they're very young, they have a dream that's more fantasy than reality. They think they can become a successful and rich idol and then everything is "happy ever after" from then on. They don't realize that when they're in their mid-thirties or something the idol career will basically be all over, and they'll need to find a meaningful life path that is mostly outside of the spotlight. But if they didn't really focus on family life and other career areas before then, they'll easily just spend much of the rest of their life not knowing what to do with themselves.

A huge part of BP's success is also related to their personalities. With a 4-member group, it's much easier to focus more time on each member and much easier for fans to learn who they are. In songs, they each get more time to shine. For me, 9-member groups are just too chaotic. When they perform on stage, it's like a platoon of people moving around and the camera is either jumping from one to another to another so fast that nobody really gets any focus...OR...the songs and camera focus more on a few members while other member are stuck in some kind of status that is in between being backup dancers and group members.

IMO , the reason Blackpink did so well in America and the west is bc of their size. 4 group members is alot easier for Americans to digest and connect too, it's also similar to most of our girl groups in size from the past. I remember how I first saw them on Good Morning America and I was like wow! There's only 4 and not 50 million like every other Kpop group I've seen. I need to learn more about them all! And they all stood out in some way to me. It is a lot harder to stand out in a larger group. Twice is very popular but for me it took me years to actually decide to give them a chance because of the daunting amount of members. I don't think BP would have been as sucessful as a 9 member group and it was abit smart of YG to debut as a 4 member group. This made it easier for people to get to know the BP girls over the years as it was just 4 talented girls. It would have been harder to try to get to know 9 BP members. If BP debuted with 9 members, they would have been in direct competition with TWICE with 9 members who debuted just a year before and building up their fan base. So it was strategically a smart move from YG i think! And it obviously paid off!

I don’t think vocal similarities with Rosé was the main problem with Jang Hanna and I believe she was probably gearing up to debut in Blackpink considering YG pushing her back into the spotlight through M&M and the Jinusean collab. I think the latter was what ruined things though; knetz’s reactions to her visuals were so negative, with some asking YG not to debut her and stick to his plan of making a visually appealing girl group for once (whatever that means). I remember feeling so bad for her bc I thought she was a cute girl. Considering YG’s habit of throwing a bone out there to gauge the public’s reaction to things, I feel like how people commenting on her looks may have played a part in her exclusion from the group.

As far as I know, Sua was a member of F21 but didn't make the cut to be in PP maybe because of her age or she doesn't fit the concept YG had for PP. After Blackpink's debut, many (including me) waited for F21's debut, but YG decided to launch a survival show for a new boy group instead. Sua of Billlie, Seoyeon of Formis_9, Youha (Sooah), Roya (Seoyoung) were the members of F21. After years of waiting, they decided to leave YG. Sua was the first one to join YG, and also the last one to leave.

I'm really happy for the girl who left the industry after multiple setbacks and eventually started a normal life and got married. One could argue that being a global superstar can be as gratifying and fulfilling as being happily married with the love of your life and starting a family. Maybe Kpop was just not for her. She can still write songs and maybe work with other artists/producers in the US. There are so many ways you can get into the industry now without being in the frontline.

Damm… so many ppl Yang Hyun Suk picked up from Kpop star and didn’t actually debut. That really sucks. I remember when he was trying super hard to recruit Lily M. (Whom I’m really glad she chose JYP over JG). YG is super cut throat… I feel really bad for the other girls who didn’t get to debut.

He got Lee Hi and AKMU. They are clearly the most successful acts to come out of Kpop Star. But he mostly wasted Lee Hi's time during the 7 years that she was at YG and she spent a total of 6-years on hiatus. If Lee Hi hadn't been able to get help from Epik High to produce her Seoulite album, she would have had nothing but one album and one mini-album to show for her 7 years at YG. There are also indications that popular TV dramas wanted to have Lee Hi do OSTs for them, but YG rejected the offers. YG also wasted Katie Kim's time. She was the winner of S4 of Kpop Star (the same season that Lily M was in it) and was supposed to get an album produced by YG as part of the winner's deal. YG did nothing for her and finally just cut her loose. Her album came out after she left YG, but YG said that she was able to use YG facilities and stuff and worked with a YG producer, so that sort of counted as YG helping her with her album. Hanna Jang is a really good singer, but YG also wasted her time at YG and then let her go. Denise Kim is another one. I guess Bang Yedam is sort of doing okay in Treasure. YG has always had a really hard time multi-tasking. It seems like the top management want to control everything, so there's never enough time to focus on more than a few acts. They should figure out ways to really focus on their top acts, but also have other teams that know how to be successful and profitable in managing less famous acts on a reasonable cost-profit basis.

I think it was clear what YG was aiming when debuting blackpink. They wanted to debut girls that had little visibility in the public. Jennie was basically the only member that the public has been exposed to but not too much, Rosé was credited as a YG trainee on GD's song, so practically nobody knows anything about the members. Their pre-debut promotions was just one dance practice and when they debuted they didn't do any tv appearances outside music shows, they didn't do any interviews at all. So YG wanted blackpink to be this mysterious group, with not only great talents but all being visuals.

I think YG new girl group is gonna debut next year in 2023 Because Swi.T debuted in 2002 and 7 years later 2ne1 debuted and then again 7 years later Blackpink debuted wich means Baemon will debut next year when Blackpink contract will expire
@Balerion_thedread2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no ..yes i think YG will debut a new gg in 2023 but i don't think YG will disband bp...2ne1 had a big Scandal which they couldnt recover, so they had to disband them meanwhile bp have never had a big Scandal in thier career (and fyi dating is not a scandal)...YG has no reason to disband them,it literally makes no sense..when 2ne1 disbanded YG had bigbang to rely on,they also had winner and ikon who were monster rookies at that time,plus YG also had other solo artists and groups like psy,lee hi and epik High ..now most of them have left YG and the only group who are relevant in YG is bp only...yes treasure is doing good in thier own ways but they ain't even the top10 biggest boygroup ryt now..winner and ikon's popularity are at an all time low...so unless a big big Scandal hits bp, there's no way YG will disband them

Being a trainee would be like being in Boot camp. Yet I wonder how rough it woukd be for though who didn’t make the cut? I heard there were trainees for like 10 years that never debuted as OMG. Can you imagine so much of your life just going up into thin air like that? I know Bom was one of YG's longest Idol trainees. She was orgionally supposed to debut as an R&B artist. "Baby Boy"which was on Lexy's third Album Rush. Was a side of Bom I never had seen & makes me wish Bom got a better deal. She was so good yet so underrepresented here as was Lexy as well. :/

Just thinking about how much YG wasted great talents bec they just don't know how to handle them, or they aren't able to handle multiple artists. Like they are a company with the knack of finding hidden gems, but that's just it, they're just collecting them to put in their basement display instead of exposing them to the world
@TEAM__POSEID0N2 жыл бұрын
I think I hear Lee Hi saying AMEN! YG actually seems to be focused mainly on (1) making and promoting boy idol groups and, with much lower priority, (2) making and promoting girl idol groups. Blackpink's explosive popularity has in many ways turned YG's world upside-down, and probably surprised the company in a big way, since they invested probably easily 10 times more in promoting and developing their new boy groups in the 2014/2015 era (and also their other new boy group in 2019) than they ever invested in promoting and developing Blackpink. Blackpink basically earned in advance the money that has been invested in them AFTER they became super popular. If YG had been a bit more creative, they could have had fantastic success with artists like Lee Hi, Hanna Jang and Suhyun, who don't fit the standard idol template. YG should have just done a series of special projects and albums with them, as well as promoting them as OST queens. They would have been good solo and as a unit. They could also have done some special unit projects with AKMU, letting Chan Hyuk handle the production and so on. YG's problem with artists like that (and Gummy also) is that YG just tries to apply the exact same idol group formula to everyone, even though different approaches could be so much more successful for different types of artists.
@rogue80592 жыл бұрын
@@TEAM__POSEID0N totally agree. It's such a waste. I keep thinking maybe it's really hard for them to handle many artist but then you think of SM, they're able to handle their multiple artists, debuting their solos with different and well crafted concepts for each. So I think it comes down to their perfectionism (even though not everything they release is that good) and mostly misogyny. Because if you think about it, they pretty much allows their male artist the creative freedom. They can actually release multiple music as soon as it's available. Yet somehow it's so hard for their female artist even though there are already recorded songs. Lee hi and CL already had an album ready for release but they won't let them.

Would’ve still been cool if they created a larger group and called them Blackpink as well. Having some of the members do the “pink” concepts while others do the “black” ones. Kinda like how NCT have their units, the difference being the members are set. THAT would’ve been kinda cool.
@TEAM__POSEID0N2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. But I don't think it would have been as successful. Large groups scatter the focus too much. Having only 4 members has been a huge advantage for Blackpink because their personalities can shine more and get more spotlight. If they were just 4 people who had no sparkle in their personalities, it could have been a disaster. But because each member is really interesting, charming and charismatic, those aspects have more impact in a smaller group. I often don't even try to follow the huge groups because it's just frustrating taking time to get to know them and then after you get to know them seeing how little time each member gets to shine and have attention.
@bblack68682 жыл бұрын
No….having 4 is the perfect number…..less is more…..more intimate, to focus, and handle. When you have such individual extraordinary talent like BP , a large group isn’t needed…..they fill up a stage , no matter the size. Also remember…..the girls gravitated to each other, so they really created themselves, and it was YG that took notice and put out what was already there.
