Always good to get a full vehicle check before you buy . . . I currently live in Ontario Canada (although grew up in the UK) and here it is mandatory for the owner of the vehicle you are buying to provide you with a report similar to but not quite as detailed. It is a good idea to run your own vehicle history check before you even make an offer of purchase. Note that just because a vehicle is a write-off does not mean it cannot be repaired and put into good working order. It just means the cost of repairing the damage was deemed by the insurance company to be more than the vehicle was actually worth . . . . and given how much dealerships can charge to repair a bike with new factory parts it is not very difficult to hit that threshold particularly with an 8-10 year old vehicle. In North America you can buy "technical" write-offs but if you are mechanically competent you can buy write offs for practically nothing and repair them. The bike may have had cosmetic damage - things like the fuel tank dented, clocks, indicators, headlight broken, bent forks etc. I crashed my RD400 when I was 18 - it was repairable but I replaced a lot of these small but very expensive parts. Fiat mileage - looks like a typo.

Freddie don’t worry too much about it. I’ll be honest, with the cost of triumph parts it doesn’t much for them to be a cat N write off. I dropped mine (exactly the same as yours) when it was less than a year old, all cosmetic scratches and dents (non on the frame) and it was close to being written off then! They are built solidly, so much so I rode it home from Scotland before it was repaired. You’ve ridden your bike for long enough now to not need to worry about it. Just enjoy the ride!! 👍👍

Freddie, you are not alone! I bought a Yamaha Diversion from a so called 'reputable garage' back in 2011. Wasn't until I traded it in a few years later I got told by the garage I was buying my new bike from that the Divi was a write off. Completely knackered the trade in value. I will never buy a vehicle again without doing a proper check like you've done on this video.

Sometimes being written off can be misleading,as the official costs can be higher than the bikes worth,labour,parts etc.as long as the frame and other parts are fine nothing to get upset about,besides that you have been riding the bike and it’s been fine🤔

Spot on, I had my old SV650 stolen it was 15 years old. As every lock had been damaged (ignition, petrol cap and seat). also, a dent in the petrol tank. The price of new, genuine parts exceeded value of the bike, it was a category N. Even though the bike shop could repair it for a few hundred pounds not using genuine parts and not replacing the tank but repairing it.

Yup. Last last spring my Suzuki Marauder got written off as in a round about a car failed to see me and crashed in me. The speeds were slow and the bike just has a broken mirror, blinker and dented and scratched exhaust. Insurance company wrote it off because original parts are no longer available (and if found somewhere, expensive as hell) even though technically all could have been fixed in few hundred euros by aftermarket parts. So, insurance company bought my bike for Copart auction and now I drive an old Triumph Speedmaster.

Something I always mention too my friends when they're buying a used car, motorcycle, boat etc...... Is generally you're buying somebody else's problem, you need to make those people understand that you'll buy that problem off of them for the right price 😁🥃

Insurance companies willl normally „write off” a mototrcycle if the repair cost is over 60% the value. It happened to me on a 14 month old VFR800i because the OEM parts from Honda were so expensive. You probably overpaid for the Triumph, but it looks fine, and you are enjoying, it so its only money!. It’s definately worth checking the history before buying any second hand vehicle.

I had an sv650s from 07 that was a cat d write-off due to a crash causing belly fairing damage. The bike was fully repaired by the oem dealer and I got it from fleabay for £1600. I sold it 3 years later for the same. Best value bike I've ever owned. If not precious they're a brilliant way to save money.

Ah don't worry about it, I've had cars where the insurance wrote it off cuz I had to drive old bangers all my life and they sit in that curious position where the car itself is cheap however finding parts is uncommon. That's usually where a write off happens, the vehicle isn't beyond saving, it's just not worth the labour and parts to the insurance company.

Oh man ! I feel for you and Monika bro...seems two of those jackets and two pairs of boots cost more than your Triumph and Fiat together ! No matter it's ok...My old 2008 Chevy Venture stealth camping Van here in Calif cost me 2 thou 4 years ago..had 2 thou in parts put on her and she has been very good to me...maybe I will add a Royal Enfield and a enclosed trailer to haul bike around in to the mix..your reactions about the Triumph and Car (and waiting on Monika's Mother ) and Monika's laughter are wonderful medicine to me...Thank you so very much...

Great vlog as always. The Fiat mileage was most likely to have been incorrectly input by the MOT tester, as this is the only time that it appears on government databases (when I worked in the motor trade I occasionally came across inconsistent figures, if it appears more than once, I would be suspicious, unless the lower figure carries on, which would signify a speedometer exchange). Your insurance company should be able to check on the insurers database to check what damage was reported for the Bonneville

I sold my bike not long after a crash on a roundabout, a few scratches and the forks were slightly twisted, got a mechanic to go over the bike and give me their opinion and apart from the forks which he corrected he said the bike was fine. I sold the bike in confidence and if the buyers asked I'd tell them the history of it but if they don't why scare them unnecessarily

Thought I would give Car Vertical a try. Tested 3 bikes, all came back with no issues. 16 and 14 year old bikes, I also tried it on my 2 year old Tiger 900, they didn't find anything, so little information in fact they just gave me the credit back, which was nice of them.

Looks like the Fiat's mileage in 2019 was down to someone needing new specs! I am quite sure the 87,000 reading should be 137,000 which would fit with the previous and subsequent year readings. As for the Bonneville's Cat N status, that is just down to the insurance company considering it not worth the repair cost. For example, if you damaged the wing of the Fiat and tried claiming on your insurance then it would be a Cat N write-off because the insurance company would price up the cost of a new wing plus labour and paint which would be more than the £600 'book value'; get the repairs done at a decent repair shop by salvaging the original wing and you would probably only pay a couple of hundred pounds.

Nice one Freddie and Monika, my bike was a Cat N write off, the previous owner never mentioned it and I only found out when I was going to trade it in for a new bike, the dealer did the check and showed me the report, the damage was non structural and cosmetic only. The bikes value dropped to around a £1,000 less even though all the repair work has been carried out so your bonnie still has value, it's just less value....

My boot of choice are non biking but offer brilliant protection, they are...gasp...Skechers, I believe they are called Sargents, around £80, WATERPROOF, BIG THICK SOLES AND SUPER COMFY FOR WALKING. I can vouch for ankle protection after being rear ended on my ol dearly departed BMW1100RT and having her lay down on me! Next for me are winter gloves, probably in a gauntlet style, I am tired of ice cold shafts or air going up my jacket sleeves!!!!

Hi Freddie Another fantastic video fella. Yes I had a shock when I bought a motorcycle. I found out after I bought my Harley davidson 883 sportster custom that it was a import. It was a 2009 bike. But didn't actually get registered with the DVLA till 2018. You live and learn. These vehicle check sites are worth every penny. Thanks for sharing.

Cat N classification encompasses all non-structural damage, such as body panels, lights, and the infotainment system. As with Cat S cars, Cat N vehicles can be put back on the road but they do not need to be re-registered with the DVLA

Agree on the quality and value of the TCX boots, bought pair of street ace I think it was for trips that I was going to be walking about a bit, certainly more comfortable than walking in heavier bike boots and they actually turned out to be 100% waterproof as stated. The Bonneville was probably a cosmetic wright of and uneconomic to repair to the insurers. things like petrol tank, headlights, seats, engine casings can be expensive, especially from Triumph, so the bike was repaired with parts of ebay or such.

Great review of kit, it's getting colder and wetter, time for me to upgrade some of mine. I wouldn't be too worried about a category N, I've seen a bike written off with scratches before because they say they'll have to change the panels rather than touching it up. My Guzzi was a Cat N, I saw the pics, it just needed a new ignition barrel. If you're happy with the work, it shouldn't really matter.

The Cat-N write off is not something to necessarily worry about. I know someone who had a much newer bike (2016) knocked off its side stand, it scuffed up a few of the farrings and snapped the clutch lever and broke a couple of indicators. The insurance company deemed it a total loss! Seems like it doesn't take very much to write off a bike.

I've just got to add - Freddie buy some shoe polish, those poor boots need some tender loving care. As for waterproofs, I'd thoroughly recommend the Nano Plus jacket and overtrousers from Tucano Urbano. No, they don't look brilliant, but then what waterproofs do? But they're so lightweight and they pack so small, about the size of one of those little cans of Coke they sell you on an airplane, that you can hang them off the belt if your jeans, push them into the pockets of your stylish, but not waterproof riding shirt or even squeeze them under the seat of your Triumph, and have them with your when you need them. And isn't that the point of waterproofs? To get you where you want to be dry.

I have Hood Jeans and TCX boots 🥾 and they are both fantastic quality and price. I prefer full textile Weise Outlast and Oxford waterproofs over the top if absolutely chucking it down with rain. Gloves Knox make the best Winter gloves worth every penny as are Oxford Heated Grips!

When it comes to boots I use Ashman high tops super light ,instant comfort ,ware all day on and off the bike ,great hiking boot and 100% water proof,oh and anywhere between 45_ 95 quid depending on spec .

I bought the TCX blend boots over a year ago. Simply the best most comfortable motorcycle boot I've ever owned. Used them recently on a Spanish Picos tour. Rode to Cain village and did the hike along the gorge in the same boots. Perfect.

Nothing too much to worry about with a Cat N Freddie, it's quite common, especially on auctioned bikes, so is Cat C. I have seen a few Fireblades, Gixxers and similar that have been low speed dropped, mechanically are perfect but require fairings and a fuel tank, and the insurance won't cover as the parts and especially labour, are so expensive. Some decent second hand fairings and a new tank/pegs mirrors and you get it through an MOT/inspection and it will be perfectly fine. It's a great way if you want a bike for a bargain if you can fix yourself, and I know people that buy them from auctions and sell them on, at about a 20% price decrease on a bike without the same history.

As someone has mentioned, they can be misleading. My bike was damaged by someone ramming me up the rear, which just happened to be in Brighton of all places 🤔. It was only a small amount of cosmetic damage, broken break leaver, cracked light and a loose fairing and his insurers claimed it was a Cat N write-off, because after that small cost and the labour from the approved dealership it took it over what they claimed the bike was worth. I still have the same bike 2 years later running absolutely fine after having to go through my insurance instead to actually get it fixed. They also told me that if it is fixed by one of their approved garages I don't have to legally claim it's ever been in an accident when I come to sell it.

The seller should always declare a write off to the buyer, if they don't then the buyer can sue for damages as it always effects retail values, your insurance should of picked this up as its recorded but if they haven't you need to declare it to them.

Just Bought a second pair of TCX Hero in brown. The lining of my TCX boot fell apart. I've had them over 3 years and wear them 95% of my riding time. I ride all year. Love the TCX boots.

I believe the previous owner is supposed to mention that it is a write-off (even cat n), I also believe you are also supposed to declare it to your insurance company, because failing to do so may invalidate your policy.

I thought by law if you sell a vehicle write off, you must make it known to the buyer that it has been repaired to a roadworthy condition. I bought my bike and car as repaired write-off and got my last MT-09 Tracer near £3000 cheaper than in the shop :) My car was a repaired write-off and I've now had it 8 years! A little Aygo. You can get some great deals if you look, but make sure they are repaired by legit garages and not cowboys.

My guess is that it was low sided at mild to moderate speed. Purely cosmetic. New pipes, respray, replaced mirror, turn lights, bar ends.

Being classed as 'written off' is not ideal, it depends on why the bike was 'written off. Most of my 'Bangernomics; cars have previously been in accidents,I get them cheap & drive them for years before scrapping them. The insurance company probably wrote the Bonnie off because of the cost of items like tank, side panels and exhaust. Didn't Performance Bikes magazine famously have a brand new Suzuki RG 250 on test which fell off the side stand in the car park before they rode it. The fairing was broken so it was written off because the cost of repair was so expensive.

No need to panic about write off. My Aprilia is a was written off. It cost me a couple of hundred quid to get it roadworthy and I toured on it for years after. Non structural is fine. Check the play in the steering head and that the wheels are true. Could mean that the cans, pegs and levers were damaged and the cost of repair was more that 70% of its value

I wouldn't worry about it. My bandit is a cat N which is only cosmetic damage. Makes no difference insurance wise. Only problem we will have is if we want to sell them which neither of us don't,so no big lose mate.

I'm very surprised that your insurance company didn't say something when you insured the Bonneville. I bought a salvaged car some years ago. While my insurance company is was still happy to charge me full whack to insure the vehicle, I was told, should it it get written off again the insurance company will give me little or nothing as a previous owner has already been paid for it. Insurance companies won't pay out twice on one vehicle. As you say, "Do your checks".

A cat N write off isn't necesssarily a sign of anything serious; it just means the insurance company deemed it to be more expensive to repair than the bike was worth. On a sports bike a new platic panel to replace a cracked one could be pushing a grand before labour etc. Replacing it yourself with a second hand part could be a hundred or so. Obviously yours doesn't have too much plastic, but it still could have been something trivial yet expensive - would be interesting if you can find out.

Check your insurance . If Cat N has not been declared when arranging insurance it can invalidate the policy.

Vehicle manufacture date has always shown as 1st January whenever I have used CarVertical. That means they don't actually know the date, it's just in that particular year.

A bit risky laying all that clothing on top of the Triumph, the wheels might fall off under the weight. The bike looks in excellent condition, so it sounds like something minor damage for the write off, it could simply be damaged paintwork.

Hi Freddie and Monika. Really interesting video. A Cat N isn’t so bad if the repair work is done right. My immediate reaction was how bad it was of the previous owner not to tell you and secondly has your insurance been invalid all this time because you didn’t notify them it had been a Cat N. I’m lucky my W800 was registered by the dealer so I could test ride it, after the test ride I bought it. So I’m the only person to have sat on the bike, rode it and put miles on it. And as it’s definitely a keeper, I’ll know the entire history of the bike.

Yet another excellent informative video Freddie, as for your bike although it has been written off in the past and as such value will of been compromised, and yes you should of checked before you bought it but how many of us don’t check before buying? I for one never have but after watching your video l will! I have an Aprilia Mille and l know for a fact that even a very slow speed accident i.e. fairing and or tank damage the bike would definitely be written off as any part for these bikes are ridiculously expensive. If your bike rides fine then it’s nothing to worry about.

Great video. Sorry about the Bonnie. Kinda crappy that the seller did not let you know about the previous damage… he probably pocketed most of the insurance money as well. It would be interesting to ask him/her why it was not disclosed. Not sure how its done where you live, but here in the US… a “total loss bike” / “Salvage” cannot be registered for road use unless it has a “rebuilt” tittle. As they say It’s all water under the bridge. Still a great bike!

Usually when mileage has been tampered with its the MOT Tester being fat fingered, for example my car had an MOT back in 2018 at 131,000, which it failed, upon retest the mileage was input as 13,000 and submitted.

Waxed jackets are more a fashion jacket then motorcycle jacket these days. As you say they aren't waterproof but also they disintegrate in a crash. Check the CE PPE rating of your jackets. Can N can be ok if properly repaired (sometimes it's just the manual labour that makes it a N) but the seller must declare it. Also if your insurance company asks you must declare it.

Should mandatory for dvla to record it from insurance companies. Also recorded on mot. Another money making industry, this info is available so the dvla should record it piublicly. Mileage mistakes are common with mots and I always check its right when I get an mot.

I wouldn’t worry about it being written off too much. There’s a bike seller on eBay based in Surrey that only sell written off bikes. Most of them you wouldn’t know they are write offs. It’s normally quite expensive bikes that have been dropped in a garage and scratched the bar ends. The own calls the insurance company and they just write it off.

I wouldn’t be too worried about a vehicle being written off. We had a bunch of hail storms here in NSW last year, even cars that got slightly dented got written off, although there was really nothing wrong with them. It’s just the insurance companies
