Hey y'all! I just uploaded a really long video that elaborates on the critiques I mentioned in this analysis. Some of my opinions on KP have also changed significantly since I uploaded this video, so I suggest watching my most recent KP video if you want to know my current thoughts on the show. This show truly peaked with episode 6! While I agree with most of your observations, Tankhun hitting Vegas over the head with a tray was basically the highlight of my year, so (some of) the slapstick comedy worked for me :D

Decided to go ahead and release my Kinnporsche video, but with a disclaimer: In the video (that I scripted over a month ago), I'm quite optimistic about future series from BOC. However, in light of recent events, I'm hesitant to give the company my full support. Hopefully that clears things up a bit. I hope y'all still enjoy my review!

I think the first half of the show was very promising. Like others, i was extremely apprehensive when deciding to tune in as i worried about the way it would handle its sensitive subject matter. Nevertheless,I found myself excited to watch every Saturday and was surprised It managed to keep me genuinely invested in a story this complicated-for as long as it did. It took me around 8 episodes to fully fall out of love with it, and that left me feeling extremely empty. I think- at least for me, the shows charm manly relied on its cast. I was absolutely in love with the entirety of the cast and felt such fun and joy in their performances. The behind the scenes videos supported this love of their chemistry. But after the whole situation with build, things started to crumble. I simply could get myself to view the show the same way, because of this attachment to the cast. Of course that is a personal fault as you have no way of know these on screen personalities, it still hurt. Things only worsened after i saw the way the fandom reacted to it all. ;Coddling build like he was in need of constant protection from consequence. It was like a punch in the gut. I told my self i would stick it out and at least finish the last few episodes(for the sake of analysis) but i couldn’t stomach it. Overall the show, while a possibke step in the right direction for Thai BL as a whole, has many issues and needs a lot of help. Even saying this, I’m glad i am able to step back and look back on the early days off kinnporsche and the community surrounding it,fondly. For the most part, it was a fun watch and it brought me joy for a short while. Even if it was extremely flawed, i can still appreciate what the team tried to do.

I’m writing this comment at 2am because I genuinely enjoyed watching this analysis. You were able to articulately express what I had in mind after watching the series. I love Mile and Apo; they did an amazing job portraying the characters. And I think ep6 is good because it showed that their characters have depth, especially Kinn. I don’t know if you’ve seen Blacklist but when Kinn said his iconic line (I’m more like my mom) I thought his character would be similar to Reddington of Blacklist. I really wish they focused more on Kinn+Porsche and Vegas+Pete’s characters because there is so much potential given their backgrounds. I am also disappointed with the plot twist in ep13. I think it’s unnecessary and the writers could have done a better job in ending the series. Nonetheless, I’m still grateful that Kinnporsche the series exist. 😊

Thank you for another great video! It would be really interesting to compare this episode to the one in History 3: Trapped where the characters are also thrust into nature. It is interesting, nature seems to represent as a sort of equalizer for the characters where the facade of who they have to be, their "persona" if you will, is dismantled and they are stripped down to their true genuine natures. Would you say it might be a crutch for screenwriters to progress some character development?

Oh absolutely-- I think it's the TV equivalent of the "get along shirt." Sometimes it can feel a bit forced and/or clunky, but I think Kinnporsche and Trapped implemented these episodes pretty well. Glad you enjoyed my video!!

I wasn't even 1 minute into the video and you had already summed up so much of what I felt about KinnPorsche. I agree with pretty much every word you said. I think Episode 6 is the one and only truly fantastic episode where everything just works. There are brilliant moments throughout the show - you mentioned them - but they never came together to create a great whole. I truly hated the humor in the show, it did not work at all for me and was a waste of time on top of it. But THEN Ep 6 showed that they actually can use humor well when it's character driven and grounded instead of tacked on like a bad sketch comedy. Watching the series was such a frustrating experience until I stopped willing it into becoming the series I thought it could have been and just accepted is as the wildly entertaining, outrageous and trashy ride it was. But when the production aspects like cinematography, acting, etc are so good, it's really hard not to dream of something more, something better paced, better storylined, better written.

The comedy is really for a Asian culture. From the lens of western POV, the jokes don’t work because fart jokes are viewed as grows in polite western norms much like slurping noodles in Asian culture is the norm of enjoying food in delight while western culture view it as impolite. A lot of Asian shows have jokes about poop, fart, belching because Asian culture view that in the darkest of times you can still have a good laugh. People who aren’t from an Asian culture can’t appreciate it because the POV is from a western POV. But think Quentin Tarratino did Kill Bill in the same way of interjecting humor but because it’s catered to a western joke sensibility, which I’m sure the same people praised it as brilliant. The comedy was good if you understand this is an ASIAN series catering to an ASIAN audience first and foremost. International fans who don’t like it want the intended audience to be switched so it panders to a western audience which I find really annoying like with most things where western fans want themselves to be place first. It’s the Caucasity and entitlement of imposing western views and trying to colonize a THAI BL to white palette.. 🥴
@Pastellyn2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for offering your perspective! I’m not opposed to slapstick, and I’ve seen it implemented well in Thai shows and film. (Take Iron Ladies, for example.) It’s not the culture I take issue with; rather, I dislike how Kinnporsche downplays + trivializes serious topics by incorporating slapstick into dramatic scenes. For example, Porsche contemplating his non-consensual encounter with Kinn is interrupted by Pete making a sex joke. I can see why that may come off as Eurocentric, but I hope this comment clarifies that I wasn’t implying the show should conform to western standards. Slapstick isn’t bad in itself- I just don’t like the way Kinnporsche uses slapstick.
@zainnee2 жыл бұрын
@@Pastellyn I get it, but in context of scene, Pete did not know Porsche’s dilemma. Unless he’s a mind reader. Also, Pete is Porsche’s roommate so the coming and going of Pete cannot be put off just because Porsche is in contemplation mode. I didn’t see that scene as slapstick because no one was laughing. It came off as Pete being empathetic to Porsche’s punishment. However, I think American media show these kind of scenes as slapstick because talking about uncomfortable feelings is often met with humor as a deflection, which is why you viewed as slapstick. Since a lot of western media is shipped abroad. I think discomfort is portrayed as slapstick. I don’t know how anyone found that scene to be funny unless they are taught to think it’s something to laugh at. Then you have to ask, where the source of why we this as humorous ones from. In real life, often when we have someone showing us empathy, we don’t see it as slapstick. Sometimes, we don’t correct a misconception or misunderstanding because we don’t want to be associated in a negative way. Which is what I think Porsche did here. He didn’t let anyone know he was in a gay relationship with anyone. This is how uncomfortable he was with it. He was outed by the Tawan debacle. He didn’t announce it until Kinn told his dad and his brother about it. In context of scene, Porsche was violated and he barely can come to terms with it. Since he’s never had any gay encounters and previously was shown as a womanizer, I’m not sure how he can tell Pete he’s been sexually assaulted. Personally, he was devastated and don’t know how to deal with the blow. Culturally, gay relationships is still hushed in Thailand even if I’m the BL world we are viewing this, it seems like everyone is gay or bi.

Which West do you live in bc they do fart jokes all the time, I was actually shocked to see them in a Asian show but maybe I didn’t watch a lot of Asian medias that’s why

@user-uz4wi2jk8z You tell me what shows you see in prime time TV that has fart jokes and taking dump humor around bathroom and public toilets. I lived in SF/LA/NYC, I don’t see them. They might imply it at best. Just name all the shows in American TV that has it. I will agree you don’t watch enough Asian shows to see how often they talk about taking dumps, diarrhea, and farting in bathrooms and after eating something that do not agreed with their stomach. Especially in comedies.

Ok, Porsche freaking out and literally jumping into a fucking river to escape the mafia is actually brilliant and in this essay I will - But no, seriously, I have many, many problems with Kinn Porsche, but episode 1 isn’t one of them. It might be actually the best episode of the entire series for me, followed by episode 6 (god I was so hopeful that the series had finally found it’s stride at the and of ep 6…..and then episode 7 came along.) I don’t even think that moment was an attempt at exaggerated slapstick tbh, I think that’s just straight up part of Porsches characterisation. He‘s at least initially presented as somewhat of a bunny ears lawyer (that is to say a character who despite using unusual and sometimes bizarre methods to get to their goal, is actually really competent and in control.) before it’s revealed in episode two that he’s actually a colossal dumb dumb who is prone to impulsive, bad decision making and is actually in control of basically nothing. That revelation already didin’t work for plenty of people (there were SO many complaints about Porsche being ooc when episode 2 aired), but it would fall completely flat without this scene. This is the first time we see what Porsche does when he’s out of his element and as it turns out it’s pretty a human reaction. He freaks out and does the dumbest possible thing and it SOMEHOW works. It also serves to make it fairly believable that he would permanently stick in Kinns mind. We know Kinn has basically seen it all by the very first scene he’s in, so for him to be surprised/intrigued by someone theyd have to do something pretty unusual and Porsche has been nothing BUT unusual. Similarilythe Pete sex joke scene came off less as a genuine attempt at Humor to me and more as an additional gut punch. Porsche feels so alone in that situation because he can’t confess what happened, even to the closest thing to friend he has in that house. The environment they live in fosters these shallow surface level interactions of brushing off pain with a quick dirty Joke and not taking anything too seriously. The fact that Pete had no way of knowing what Porsche went through at the time, just made it more devastating. To me that’s commentary on a certain social environment. Not comedy..
@Pastellyn Жыл бұрын
Funny that you mention episode one- in the larger critique of Kinnporsche I’m currently writing, I also say that episode one is the strongest, story-wise. I also agree that episode two introduces many of the show’s larger story and character problems; the Porsche from episode one seems like an entirely different person than the one from episode two. I’ll have to disagree with your statement about the sex joke in episode five since the goofy music pretty clearly establishes that the scene is intended to be read as comedic. The exchange is an example of verbal irony that’s clearly intended to get laughs from the audience-similar to the “hilarious misunderstanding” trope commonly used in sitcoms. I’ll include more analysis of this scene in my video, but suffice to say that I don’t appreciate how the script pokes fun at Porsche for being traumatized by a dubiously consensual encounter. Regardless, I appreciate you sharing your insight on this show. Thanks again for watching!
