15:57 Seeing that brought back my PTSD flashbacks of British school during my tween years. Because of the uniforms and the strict dress code. They always talked about 'dressing smart' so when I left for American middle school. I wore cat ear headbands, a spongebob jacket, and spongebob and/or fun T-shirts almost every day. And still do, seven years later. You can guess how I felt about the uniform. Also Americans always told me how much the uniform made me look like Hermione, but like...the Harry Potter uniforms are just normal British school uniforms with robes That's it!! Its wild how much people romanticized school uniforms

This is a really cool and compact video on the British invasions!! The main factor of the invasions being music is really interesting, but to be fair I used to listen to One Direction’s music so much lol (though I think it was a while after the invasion). If I can talk about some neat British media, I’d recommend you guys to check out Thunderbirds, or any of Gerry Anderson’s works! I’ve just recently started hyperfixating on this, so excuse the loredumping haha. It’s made in Supermarionation, a form of puppeteering that used electronics to make their mouths move so they could talk in time with the pre-recorded voice acting! Gerry and his crew worked on many other Supermarionation shows such as Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90, as well as some non-Supermarionation shows like UFO. There’s even remakes of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet in CGI! If you like Sci-Fi and/or puppets I’d highly recommend one of these shows, and I also recommend watching the CGI remake of Thunderbirds if you like the original! Thunderbirds specifically was cancelled due to not selling in the U S of A, so its season 2 was cut short (another factor was that there were two movies developing, Thunderbirds are Go and Thunderbird 6!) but Supermarionation did make it over to America; in the form of Team America World Police, which was (loosely) inspired by Thunderbirds! No fear, because it did make it over to other countries, such as Japan, Australia and Germany, as well as a few others, and there’s a reasonably active fan base, at least on Tumblr from what I’ve seen, still chugging along despite it being 60~ years since the release of Thunderbirds. So, if this sounds up your ally, I literally beg you, WATCH IT HOWEVER YOU CAN!! (So sorry for the massive paragraph I got too into writing about it 😭)

I find it kinda funny the "second British invasion" label gets given to Britpop somewhat being recognized by Americans in the late 90s when I think British new wave bands in the 80s had a much bigger impact on American popular music. I'd say it was kinda odd how little the biggest British acts crossed over in the period between the Spice Girls and some of the big names you mentioned in the "Third Invasion." Indeed, Wikipedia's article on the "Second British Invasion" is about new wave bands in the 80s.

I feel as though the end of this British Invasion tumblr era gave way to the xandemic, which started off bright and bubbly like the psychedelic era but got darker as rappers started dying off. The moodiness of that along with the pandemic, capitol riots, movies like parasite, and general anti-authority/capitalist sentiment gave an early 70s feeling of synicism to the early 2020s. The disco era of the late 70s seems to be ramping up with people like charli being open about stimulant use and techno’s increasing popularity. People say the club is dead but I feel as though it’s on the cusp of revival.

I'd argue we're having an asia invasion going right now
@AiLoveAidoru4 ай бұрын
Seems to be mostly South Korean, but calling it the “Korean Invasion” might get you put on a watch list or something
@haileymadisonsebastian63814 ай бұрын
this phenomenon is actually named the "korean wave"! it actually started with "nobody" by the wonder girls back in 2008, but then really grew in size when "gangnam style" made the rounds, and exploded when BTS came into the picture.
@nancymeeks91444 ай бұрын
But think about it more. Genshin Impact is Chinese Hatsune miku is Japanese I can go on and on about how some other parts of culture from countries in Asia is starting to become popular in the us and that's why I think it's the asia invasion
@haileymadisonsebastian63814 ай бұрын
@@nancymeeks9144 interesting!! i didn't actually take in genshin impact because it's not in my algorithm as much as kpop is (which probably says more about me than the game lol). i'd say that japanese pop culture has just been popular for a while, but it's less the music and more manga, anime, and (recently) the fashions -- and this time, it's not just lolita but also gyaru and decora. i'd also add that 1980s visual kei was definitely a predecessor to the american scene queens of the 2000s. tl;dr i think we've just been in an asian invasian (badum tss) for a while, and social media is just now making it more prominent
@torquedawg10044 ай бұрын
i think it'd be more accurate to call it the east asian invasion!! or better yet specify it to the korean wave (maybe even the japanese/chinese wave? i don't really know what the actual phenomenon is called)

I wasn't into the early 2010s stuff like 1D or SuperWhoLock, but in the mid-2010s I started watching British youtubers (Pyrocynical, DanTDM, ImAllexx) and listening to Gorillaz, so that sort of started my own personal British invasion. As the years went on I got into more British bands, more specifically Britpop, with bands like Blur, Oasis, The Cure, Elastica, Fleetwood Mac, T Rex, and so on, liking old British things has sort of become my personality. For better or worse I've picked up a very slight British accent and British slang and mannerisms.

As an American, I did have a lot of UK-related special interests, even well into the 2020s. I even had a big special interest in one of their monarchs. I’m also fairly nostalgic for the 2010s! Things were more colorful (or should I say… colourful) back then.

It is so crazy to watch this video and having MASSIVE FLASHBACKS. The British Invasion definitely also happened back then in Indonesia when I used to live there lol

I’ve talked about this exact topic a lot. The combination of the hobbit trilogy, doctor who, and sherlock in a post Harry Potter world really led to the 2010’s British Invasion. I found this video from googling this exact revelation. Nice.

As a British and watcher of Doctor Who, we all know that it's only called the Union Jack when it is at sea, otherwise it's called the Union Flag. Thank you for coming to me Ted:Talk

I didn't have cable as a kid, so British shows were really the only "shared" experience I could have with others. I think that might be a factor as well. (Although I also watched the comedies they'd play on PBS and those didn't seem to permeate quite as well)

As a Moffat/Sherlock hater this period gave me war flashback. Just so many people *insisting* that John and Sherlock HAD to get together and parroting the patented “I’m the smartest most important person in the universe and everyone who doesn’t agree with me is a total idiot” Moffat speech almost completely drove me *nuts* (but I’m sure all those problems will be fixed with the secret good final Sherlock season!)

I remember making what I’d only describe as “keep calm and carry on memes” around 2012/2013. Moustaches were a thing then too.. which have that British “feel” to them

The moustache thing was really more about the similar rise of image obsessed post hipsters

I was also terminally online (on tumblr fandom spaces) in that time and I wasn't into the british youtubers so much but that whole union jack everywhere, using british terms, and being wildly into superwholock was absolutely me unfortunately. It was fun and I miss the energy of everyone being unashamed about their own excitement, this new online era of having to be ironic all the time is tiring. We were so sincere with it. I am going to be all in forever. And if you would ever like to have a very violent flashback the video aptly titled tumblr in 2013 by sanattia is an incredible time capsule

May I also add to the list of Impactful British Things: the wedding of William and Kate. I still, somewhere, have a souvenir Bath and Body Works hand sanitizer with a Union Jack label commemorating the event

I remember looking up one of my favorite art tuber's (went hiatus now) Tumblr because I didn't have Tumblr until I made an account at 14 and saw them reblogging Doctor Who and Sherlock and it made me get into those shows at 11 (freshly entered in middle school). I also remember I still have a Union Jack pocket watch necklace from a clearance section of Claire's despite I never worn it. ANother thing I remember my cousin is a big 1D fan when the band is still around.

I was on tumblr during the rise of SuperWhoLock. It’s really interesting how the big superhero surge started around that same time, and how it grew symbiotically with the SuperWhoLock stuff, by way of all the British actors like Tom Hiddleston, though managed to eventually outlast it. Crazy how all these teenage girls were obsessively screaming over superhero movies. I had a friend who loved Benedict Cumberbatch so much that she had a whole blog dedicated to pictures of his hands.
