So I made a little oopsie: I haven't read Romeo and Juliet since like 7th grade, and in that play they were actually both in the *same* social class. My bad. BUT I'm still sticking with the characters having different social standings in Twinkle Towne because it still fits with the rest of the theory :-) Also I have never seen West Side Story before so if it seems similar to that it is probably just because I am very good at my detective job

I can't help but think that in your interpretation, bop to the top is the song the antagonists sing as they do an ocean's 8-esque heist at a party - they are pretending to be dancing, but are actually stealing the necklace. Like they "slip and slide" around the guards; "jump and hop" on top of... something... and then have to "hop til we drop" and drop down to hide from a guard, then "start again" trying to find a new method of approach, etc. Aha! Genius!

I'd love to imagine the reason Bop to the Top's lyrics are just about dancing is because the pair are renowned Latin ballroom dancers who mingle with the upper echelon due to their talents. Coming from poor backgrounds themselves they've seen what fame can bring such as "glory", so they've begun to *expertly interweave their dancing abilities with pickpocketing* and used their stolen wealth to break into very elite social groups. During the song we see how the antagonists utilise their dancing to steal jewellery and watches off other contestants by simply brushing past them on the dancefloor and distracting the audeince and judges by mesmerising them with their choreography. And when other contestants complain and accuse the pair (bc after a few competitions you'd start to notice you're always losing valuable items) the pair use their strong physiques to bash the other contestants (on and off the dance floor)and cause injuries and/or bribe the police. Anyways love this analysis! I have so many headcanons based on your research now, what a fun project to explore! Thanku Dream Jelly :)

Romeo and Juliet are called “star-crossed lovers” by the chorus in the prologue, referring to astrology and misfortune (born with a tragic fate). The astronomy map seems relevant to that, plus the line “there’s not a star in heaven that we can’t reach” (sung by Arnold) in Breaking Free seems to imply that they can rearrange the stars and change their fate. If Arnold is lower class like you said, then maybe that’s why he’s interested in space-he wants to understand the things that seem to have “cursed” him with poorer circumstances. 👀 And like you said, stars are referenced by the title TWINKLE Town. Wow the LEVELS to this movie?? Truly iconic. Thanks for making me appreciate this childhood favorite even more.

I take your Romeo and Juliet and raise you… Taming of the Shrew. The antagonists are actually Arnold’s family. He gets caught up in their schemes because they convince him the only way he can follow his dreams is if he (the only eligible son in the family) marries Minnie, affording the family riches and Arnold class mobility. It’s a classic tale of being dared to date a girl, but falling in love with her for real. Bop to the top’s “hustle” is referencing his families attempts to impress Mr. Shane, so when the relationship is revealed, he is already endeared to the family. Minnie at some point figures out the scheme, and the family, still making their way into Mr. Shane’s inner circle after leaving an impression on him, are able to hatch a new plan to steal the necklace. Arnold must prove his love is true, and warns Minnie of the plan. They manage to capture Arnold’s scheming family and have damning evidence. They plan to run away together, believing Arnold’s familial relation to the antagonists would prevent any approval from Mr. Shane. However, this act of bravery speaks to Mr. Shane’s otherwise hidden emotional side, and he permits Arnold and Minnie to live their lives how they see fit.

All this evidence points me to thinking of a 'Strictly Ballroom' style movie. They've been at the same dance school but are learning different styles, such as the classical ballroom and the modern disco. Pressure from their teachers or pageant mums, they come together and combine their styles with the Merengue. The diamond necklace? The prize for the big competition or a stealing plot, the antagonist plants it on Minnie or Arnold to try disqualify them.

I think the antagonists in bop to the top are actually convincing Arnold and Minnie to work with them. Lyrics including 'shooting for the stars' and 'work our tails off every day' are appealing to Arnold's astronomy dreams, while the lyrics 'got to raise the bar' are appealing to Minnie's dream of passing the bar exam being a lawyer. The star crossed lovers must work with these hardened criminals for their safety, knowing one wrong move and they'll be pinned to take the fall.(This number is the act 1 closer) Luckily Minnie uses her skill of speaking like a lawyer to make sure our antagonists are the ones arrested for the attempted heist. However, Mr Shaine is not so easily fooled and pursues the couple in chase. It is at this point it is revealed that Arnold chose the date for the heist and he used his astronomy knowledge to pick the night of the extremely rare face moon (when the moon resembles a human face) which is when werecamels are on the prowl. Minnie's dad is trampled by a rampaging werecamel, but before are heroes can meet the same fate they sing breaking free, calming the creature and giving him control of his fate. This is when it's revealed to be Johnny Omni the man who they'd met in the park earlier. Johnny is thankful and provides them the funds to leave New York and start a new

I'm impressed that you were able to come up with this much detail. However, I'm a little confused as to why you concluded that Minnie and Arnold must be from different social classes. In Romeo and Juliet, as well as in modern adaptations of the same storyline, the two protagonists are from rival families of the same social class. Having Arnold come from an equally wealthy and prominent family would be more consistent with the Romeo and Juliet inspiration, and would also help explain why he was at the party in the first place.

omg, friend and I have been theorizing about what the musical in the movie was about for YEARS. Thank you! One small thing, not saying the evidence of the musical doesn't imply Arnold's family is less wealthy than Minnie's, but you don't extrapolate that from romeo and juliet because the whole beginning of the play is "two families alike in dignity" because the point isn't that romeo and juliet are not being kept apart by class difference, but by a feud that is so pointless that we never even learn what the feud is over, we only see the dire consequences the family experience because they kept fanning the flames of hatred and discourse until it consumed their own children.
@marianafranco55088 ай бұрын
id also say MAYBE minnie and arnold arent strangers, because they mention in two different songs they didnt realize someone like that was RIGHT BESIDES THEM, which seems to imply they at least knew about each other existence or shared some spaces at some capacity (im inclined to believe arnolds family worked for the schain's and they all were at the party because of that) but the party was the first time they actually talked and were alone together and even shared interests (maybe shes a space nerd too, the moon appears in their duet specifically) and after that they cant take their eyes of each other like what do you mean someone who understands me so well was right beside me and we CANT keep talking because my rich dad needs to introduce me to a bunch of rich spoiled weirdos he wants me to marry (which is a hunch, but very likely to happen in a play in the 70s with rich people)

This is such an interesting video, and possibly the most in-depth analysis on this subject to date! Huge props for your research-the idea of a musical about a jewel heist in 1970s New York City, possibly with half or even 3/4 of the prominent characters being Latinos, is quite compelling. I don't think any of this was what the screenwriters and crew behind the movie intended, so you did a great job in putting it all together so efficiently. I would totally check out this musical! Just a few pointers, though (apologies if I'm being too pedantic): what is referred to as a "disco ball" is actually formally known as a mirrorball (or glitterball, for those who live in the UK), and most importantly, the Latin musical stylings in both Bop to the Top and Can't Take My Eyes Off of You sounds closer to something like Salsa or Mambo than Merengue. Merengue is much more frantic in its sound-think the music of Elvis Crespo, or the song Kulikitaka by Toño Rosario, which was actually trending on TikTok a couple years ago during the height of the pandemic.

This fit together way better than I thought it would. Amazing job, I am fully convinced that this should become a real musical now.

My theory is that Arnold was at the party because he's working as a servant. For large events like this, it's typical for hosts to hire extra help from the catering company or a similar agency. I see Arnold's mom or dad working for the company full-time and Arnold getting hired for this event (as he does, on occasion) to make some extra cash for the family. I envision Arnold's family as not dreaming of becoming part of the upper class, but rather resentful of the bowing and scraping they have to do for them and how little they get in return. They wouldn't approve of Arnold and Minnie's relationship because they think there's no way her feelings could be genuine. As a member of the upper crust, they assume she must have ulterior motives or at least be flaky/insincere. Arnold's parents also think he's just generally naive, a dreamer with his head in the clouds, what with his obsession with outer space and the telescope he rescued from a dumpster. There's no way they'll ever be able to afford to send him to college to study astronomy, so why bother with the hobby? They think he should focus on learning a practical trade and helping out the family, not staring at the stars and certainly not pursuing a relationship with a girl who clearly does not care about him. HIs parents' disapproval of him mixing with the jet set ultimately comes from a place of love/wanting to protect him from embarrassment and pain, but their cynicism about the world just creates friction in their relationship with Arnold and drives him to run away.

I will be entirely honest. I do not think Minnie and Arnold's goal is to steal the necklace. Because it feels like to me that the necklace is a prize in a dance competition, that's why the antagonists sing about dancing. They are trying to win the competition, either by cheating or not, "flash a smile in their direction," get the judges to pick you by any means necessary. But Minnie and Arnold hide their identities and wow the judges. Which would explain why there is a pretty big focus on disco and merengue, both very dance heavy music genres. They are literally designed to be danced to in specific ways. After they win Minnie and Arnold, they are found out and escape.

I remember being obsessed with this movie as a kid, but i never even thought about what the play was about. Maybe its just not my six year old self's priority, but its cool to finally acknowledge it all these years later

also, in the musical version of the movie, they perform a completely different musical that is written entirely by kelsi, and it's called juliet and romeo, and is a retelling of romeo and juliet with a happy ending.

"You know the world can see us in a way that's different than who we are" goes perfect with Arnold and Minnie being caught for being thieves. Although everyone else thinks bad of them for it, they were able to break free together, so they don't care

i love that the movie has you going through all these awesome clues and research, and then the high school musical “on stage” musical just comes out and says on page NINE that it’s “Juliet & Romeo” written by Kelsie lol

My headcannon is now that the Mr Shane from the play is the same Shane as Shane Company from the “Now you have a friend in the diamond business!” ada

this is a masterpiece on all levels. i do have a suggestion, what if the reason arnold is even at the party is because it's near a really great star gazing spot, so he snuck into a really high building to stargaze, but then saw the party on his telescope and sawminnie, and had to sneak into the party
