At least the way I perceive it, the MGS references are usually used in his work to really show just how much he is cringing at what he is being forced to watch. Here, though, some of them are actually appropriate at reflecting his point about this documentary being both propaganda and an unfocused mess.

@ZeldaEd1233 жыл бұрын
When I was a Brony, I was completely self-aware of what I was getting into. Around the time I joined The Heard, the biggest "controversy" was Twilight becoming a princess. I admit it made any reason to watch the show before that pointless because I already knew what happened, but being the anal retentive bastard I am, I had to erase the fact I already knew about it and decided to take the journey to that point anyway. Even with that fact erased, I kind of saw the bitching about it (particularly from one crotchless wonder named Chad Rocco) stupid. Twilight becoming a princess seemed pretty obvious (at least to me anyway. I mean, her Element of Harmony was a tiara. I've been a fan of Wonder Woman long enough and I've seen enough episodes of Sailor Moon to know what a tiara is often associated with.) And considering how many people (including Chad "I'll fight SOPA but not TPP cause I apparently used up all the balls I once had to fight the former" Rocco) in the fandom put Lauren on a pedestal to the point they said the show was better with her, they conveniently ignored the fact that she said Twilight's destiny was to become Celestia's successor. Pretty sure becoming a princess is a part of that. And of course they were apparently pissy about it because it was done for the purpose of selling toys. I looked at that like "Really? Now this is a problem? The franchise's entire existence has been built on selling toys since the 80's, but now this, something your precious Lauren Faust had planned from the beginning, is what's upsetting you?"
@DrawciaGleam023 жыл бұрын
@@ZeldaEd123 " I've seen enough episodes of Sailor Moon to know what a tiara is often associated with." Now I'm imagining Twilight throwing her element at enemies yelling "Moon Tiara Magic" or something similar.
@ZeldaEd1233 жыл бұрын
@@DrawciaGleam02 Strangely enough, mainly because of Equestria Girls bringing it full circle, I actually had an analogy (at least I think that's what I can call it) about The Mane Six and The Sailor Guardians. Twilight obviously being Usagi, Fluttershy being Ami (due to both characters initial shyness prior to meeting their respected groups' leader and how much they dedicated themselves to their interests with Fluttershy's being animal care and Ami's being her studies), Applejack being Rei (due to both coming from families steeped in tradition with Rei's being a Shrine Maiden and AJ's being a farmer), Rarity being Mina (due to both characters being the pretty one of their respected groups and their luckless love lives) and Rainbow Dash being Mako (due to both of them being tomboys.) Fuck if I knew where Pinkie played into it (and no, I never went with her being the Mane Six's Chibiusa and I still wouldn't even if I was still in The Heard because her and Twilight's relationship would need to be like a mother and daughter and that was never the case.) I don't know how much of my analogy came true now that FiM is over because ever since someone who actually worked on the show (one of its animators) was revealed to have been a diddler, I wasn't able to see it through to the end. I admit I always knew my time as a Brony wasn't going to last that long and I figured I was more than likely going to stop once the FiM and Equestria Girls stuff ended or if FiM didn't become to My Little Pony what Beast Wars was to Transformers (and based on what I've heard from the few members of the fandom I still like, it didn't), but I thought my exit would be on much more preferable circumstances.

I was literally the *target demographic* and I got shit for it for so long. It’s the reason why I’ve become super insecure about the fandoms I like and the media I consume. It’s overkill, but the documentary comforted me in some aspects, and made me make the show my entire personality on the other, and as someone who has bad hyperfixations it definitely had bad effects on my mental health. I still love the show though, even though it’s become Brony bait. It’s still my comfort every now and then. During the time this documentary was made, it was almost a coping mechanism to make it your personality, and to be edgy constantly. You just wanted people freaked out enough to go away, or try the show for themselves. I know because I was one of those freaks lmao.

Fun fact though about the bit with the kid with Aspergers and his mom wondering if the writers know someone with it... Funny she said that, because Twilight Sparkle has Aspergers. No, seriously. It's canon. Lauren Faust intended for Twilight Sparkle to have Aspergers, and for it to be even more obvious than it honestly was in hindsight, but Hasbro told her "kids wouldn't understand that" and had her refrain from making it obvious or publicly revealing this fact until the show was nearly over, because heaven forbid we HELP kids understand it. Preschooler staple Sesame Street has an autistic muppet now, but don't even hint about Aspergers' existence to the older children watching the talking horse cartoon. Kinda like how Celestia is a princess only because Hasbro wouldn't let Lauren make her a queen because "princesses are easier to market and we want to perpetuate the unhealthy idea in little girls' minds that queens can only be evil and/or ugly!"
@sunfl0wer_9883 жыл бұрын
Isn't Asperger's not getting on how people feel on emotional levels? If so, can you tell me some parts that highlighted her having that cause I don't watch the show but I'm still curious.
@ElFreakinCid3 жыл бұрын
@@sunfl0wer_988 Aspergers, which I myself have, is the short name for Asperger's syndrome (named for the German scientist who first thoroughly studied it), the highest-functioning form of autism which typically results in very high intellect and creativity levels, but often at the cost of having difficulty understanding social cues, expressing emotions outwardly (or the total opposite, being VERY emotional) or empathizing with other humans (which is usually accompanied by connecting better with animals, sentimental objects or fictional characters). It can also come with highly obsessive tendencies, germophobia, desire for total order and strict adherence to routine in one's daily life, aversion to major changes, inability to understand sarcasm or figures of speech, difficulty with fine motor skills like tying shoelaces, difficulty looking new people in the eye, a constant subconscious need to keep one's hands busy, and other such things. If you look back at the behaviour of early Twilight Sparkle, you can definitely see that Lauren intended her to have this condition, particularly with, for example, how obsessed with her studies and organization she was, or how she had to be TAUGHT, as a college-age adult, about friendship and connecting with other ponies.

@@sunfl0wer_988 I mean literally the show being about learning about friendship mostly centers around twilight she starts out as someone who only values knowledge and work and doesn't understand what's so special about making friends and views it as a hindrance to work and as a result she herself has only a couple friends who she greatly undervalue and ignores until being forced to basically make friends whom she goes on a quest in the first episode of the show to stop a villain taking over and through it them doing shit that saves her or overcomes serious obstacles shows her how powerful your relationships with others cab be and she embraces them to overcome the villain the next like 3 seasons after that is her now catching up with years of missed out opportunities with others and learning how to be a good friend basically and how to overcome problems friends face after that its mostly moral stuff forgive your enemies and shit people move on don't hold grudges or let anger or hate control you but that's why alotta the shows morals are simple cause to twilight it wasn't such an obvious thing cause she never really had friends, sorry for the paragraph thanks if u still read it hope I explained it well

I never watched the documentary before, not even when I was in the fandom. I never was really interested in watching it Actually, I was a bit surprised by a lot of things bronies did back in the day, like obsessing over background characters by giving them weird names that were a pun on "pony" and other horse-related words (I prefer Time Turner and Vinyl Scratch over Dr Whooves and DJ P0n-3, tyvm), giving them tons of personality traits because of only one thing they did (such as giving Derpy an obsession with muffins because of one scene where EVERYONE was obsessed with muffins or making Lyra Heartstrings obsessed with humans when she only sat like a human for one scene), and shipping background characters with each others just because they stood next to each other. Or similarly, never living down small moments and turning them into dated memes, like Scootaloo being a chicken or the "20% cooler" thing. Or using horse pun terminology never used in the show like "Brohoof" or swapping any human-related thing with its horse equivalent in common sayings, even when the show has in fact used the word "hand" before. I guess there were a lot of things I found cringy back when I became a fan in 2012, and the days of 2010-2015 in general, so I never really called myself a "brony".

The point of propaganda is to make something look good. I'd argue that the brony documentary did the complete opposite. It made bronies look even worse and far more cringey than they really were. Going as far as suggesting they all have deep psychological issues and/or male insecurity. Sure, there was some of that, but most were just in it for the memes or they just liked the show. It did make bronycon look great though. So yea you could call it bronycon propaganda. I just wouldn't call it *brony* propaganda since it wasn't doing them favours

@jbiehlable heh, didn't expect to find someone else with the same philosophy, but I guess if you are here as someone who enjoys this kind of things either you accept the criticism, or you hate the criticism that you get and worship the show, nowadays MLP is almost like religion, there are fanatics who defend it like it is a dogma, and other who know what to take from the show, and what to ignore, it takes at least some level of maturity to do the second one, and that is why in my opinion, this fandom is good, if you ignore the bad shit, the rest are very mature people with open minds and good tastes, just like in the video you can enjoy the show without making it your existence.

If I'm being honest as a brony, I completely agree with you Dumbsville. They should have touched upon the more dark and serious things that happened within the brony community to show that not all bronies are ok, but instead all the documentary is now is an ad for bronycon, which is now outdated since bronycons are now no longer accessible. I also wish they would talk more about the people in the community and their experience with humiliation for being a brony. No one should be judged for being who they want to be (as long as they aren't hurting anybody or breaking the law of course). If they want to watch a show for little girls, go for it. It would definitely not only bring awareness to those being bullied for things they are passionate about, but again, touch upon how not all fandoms are sunshine and rainbows. I can think of many fandoms that are similar to the MLP community where at first it was pretty good, then spiraled out of control, then perished in obscurity (examples being the fandoms of Undertale, Eddsworld, FNaF, etc.). I also just want to say your awesome, Dumbsville. Keep up the good work!

I definitely understand being extremely hyperfixated on a show as someone who is likely neurodivergent and has hyperfixations themselves. When I was younger, MLP actually was my hyperfixation, and I was *extremely* invested in the show, but I grew out of it. (Note that I was actually a child, lol.) Some of my hyperfixations now can be considered childish, and a lot of them are cartoons, which kind of embarrasses me, so I don't think people should be teased for their harmless interests, whether they're neurodivergent or not. This, however, is ridiculous. There's a difference between being hyperfixated or just really loving a show, and making it your entire identity and ignoring the bad parts. I have a life and an identity outside of my hyperfixations, and I understand that fandoms can be very problematic and the shows themselves have problems. This documentary is honestly just confounds me.

If anyone wants a real documentary about the Brony Fandom, A Brony Tale - Exploring an Unusual Fandom is the way to go. It was made by Ashleigh Ball, one of the voice actresses of Friendship is Magic, and her experience with the show and the fanbase it garnered. It started with a trickle of people coming to a few gigs she had with her rock band because she was the voice of Rainbow Dash and Applejack, they wanted to show some appreciation, and then she finally decides that she'll go to a convention she's been invited to, but she wants to do more research about what she's about to get herself into. It's really quite fascinating, and it was Nominated for Best Documentary from the Leo Awards in 2014. Far better than what John De Lancie did. It still has its moments of awkward bronies, but like, bronies are weird man, I wouldn't say it was normal at all and I was/am one of them despite never having gone as far as to purchase merchandise, official or fan-made, and have barely met more than a handful of people in person that shared an interest in Friendship is Magic. I honestly can't even tell you why I liked the show, I just did, I'm not even going to try fishing for excuses. The closest I've come to overdoing it is downloading too much free music the fans have made, the stuff I've found is pretty great. I've already got LEGO and Star Wars that takes over my life, I didn't need a third thing to do that, too. Gotta find some measure of normalcy, if that's even possible.

Hey Dumbs, as a brony myself, also one with Aspergers, I can recognize there are a lot of problems with this doc that I didn't realize at the time. Personally, I still love the show, though not as much as Avatar or Transformers Animated. I'm wondering if you saw anything past like S3 of MLP, as imo the content got a bit more mature and they did some cool shit in the last three seasons. But yeah, I can see things that are wrong with this doc's quality. Also, I want you to rip God's Not Dead to SHREDS.

Bronies get such a bad rep for having this kind of obsessive ppl in the community I think this show actually opened the gate for tons of artists to find themselves really open universe that has tons of flexibility in it (rewriting whole show, making their own AUs and having fun like this. Ponies allow for all kinds of stories) And there we have ppl worshipping in show characters and having rooms full of toys for kids

The one that really caught me off guard, as somebody who couldn't care less about Pony shit, is the HOI4 mod. Yes, Hearts Of Iron 4, a grand strategy game about the second world war, got a fucking my little pony mod. Im serious. I downloaded it for a meme, expecting it to be little more than a joke mod. How do you reconcile full scale industrial warfare and manuever-based combined arms operations with... talking ponies. As it turns out, the answer is you make a genuinely engaging and well crafted experience arguably even better than the base game. One that absolutely floored me with just how much effort had actually been put into a god damned my little pony mod. When the fucking pony mod has better focus trees than most countries in the actual game it means Paradox need to up their fucking game. 99% of everything is pure fanfiction, there are like 3 countries in the mod that are actually from the show (equestria the changelings and I think the crystal empire), compared to the dozens and dozens and entire fucking extra continent (soon to be two) of essentially fanfiction. Honestly I usually just play the Griffons and never bother with the fucking ponies across the ocean most of the time. Also, there's a Griffon called Beakolini and it's literally just Mussolini, but he's Griffon. And I find that hilarious.

Metal Gear hits different when watching the MLP Documentary ngl
@shotaroseyespark8210 Жыл бұрын
As someone who still likes MLP, I can get the “deep” thing one of the guys said. Sure most of the show is basic human decency but there’s some episodes that do get deep. For example “Do Princesses Dream Of Magic Sheep” in one of the later seasons where we see princess Luna dealing with guilt and self harm: something a lot of other kids shows never show.

Used to be like these guys in the documentary. I don’t regret being that person but it’s painful to think back on that time.
