Complete with hokey, watered down, incorrect chord progressions!
Taped sometime in October '67, it wasn't shown on TV until many months later.
Filling in for Chris Hillman is road manager Jimmy Seiter; it's still unclear who the drummer was at this show, and why Michael Clarke was not there. Some sources say it was the percussionist from The Association???
Also here are Barbara McNair & Noel Harrison.
Like the Smothers Brothers appearance, this show fell into that brief window when Gene Clark re-joined the band.

That is Ted Bluechel on drums (from the Association) and Jimmi Seiter (road manager) with Gene and Roger.

THANKS! I thought that might be Jimmi as he appeared on another TV show filling in for Chris on "Mr Spaceman". Did those guys just not want to appear on TV?

@@THEScottCampbell Don't know if they were sick (which occasionally happened). But here they're just doing a very generic singalong with members of the cast and hosts. This was after the sacking of Crosby and Michael Clarke, so maybe Chris was sick. The Byrds got down to 2 members during the recording of THE NOTORIOUS BYRD BROTHERS. Gene Clark was brought back into the group to fill out the lineup, but had to leave after a few weeks due to alcoholism and nerves.

Mcguinn had a funny look here. Like here's trying to emulate the SGT. Pepper era Lennon but with a bad hair part. Nice to see Gene back in there. Too bad it was brief.

This is from Noel Harrison's "Where The Girls Are (aired in 1968) when Gene Clark briefly re-joined the Byrds after Crosby was fired in 1967. They also performed Mr. Spaceman on this show.

Would love to see this in color! I'll bet the effects were super groovy! LOL! There used to be a video on here of Noel Harrison introducing Barbara McNair singing. I'll bet it was from the same show.

This is even worse than when the Byrds had to sing Do You Believe In Magic on Hullabaloo (that clip's on KZbin as well). TV producers seemed to think rock shows should be just like Broadway musicals or music hall productions, where the whole cast would come out at the end and do some rousing "showstopper". Interesting to see Gene Clark in his brief 2nd Byrds period. He evidently did a number of TV shows during that time, because they seem to be turning up here.

This can't be 1967. Gene's got the kind of haircut he wore around 68/69. It's some time after Notorious Byrds was recorded, when Crosby and Mike Clark had gone

I'm thinking after Noel and Barbara the "Byrds" here are actually, from left to right, Gene Clark, Ted Bluechel?, Roger McGuinn, and road manager, Jimmi Seiter.
@bobquack1
@bobquack1 4 жыл бұрын
Correct. Only McGuinn and Hillman were left in the group. Gene Clark came back to fill in for a few weeks after the firings of Crosby and Michael Clarke.

Definitely Clark and McGuinn but definitely no Hillman or Clarke. Must have been around the end of '67 when Clark re-joined for a few weeks after Crosby got sacked.

So that must have been common to do sing-a-longs with a bunch of groups. I'm seeing more and more of that on these old shows.
@vampyros1
@vampyros1 13 жыл бұрын
Save for the lack of modulation at the end, the chord progression is correct, tho the horns do add a bit of 'flavor' on the word "sunshine". Everyone was covering the Beatles on variety-type shows back then.

No, actually it's Ted Bluechel from The Association. The Byrds were down to 2 members (McGuinn and Hillman) during THE NOTORIOUS BYRD BROTHERS album so Jimmi Seiter (road manager) is filling in, along with Gene Clark who came in for a few weeks for live appearances only after Crosby and Mike Clarke were fired.

Yes. Gene Clark came back for a few weeks to fill in since The Byrds were down to only 2 members (McGuinn and Hillman). This was after Crosby and Mike Clarke had been fired. That's road manager Jimmi Seiter in the white suit looking better than McGuinn.

The Byrds were down to only 2 members during the recording of THE NOTORIOUS BYRD BROTHERS. Crosby and Michael Clarke had been fired and Gene Clark returned for a few weeks or months. Jimmi Seiter (road manager) is filling in in the white suit at far right. Ted Bluechel fills in on drums from The Association. It is likely Chris Hillman was sick at this time.
