I think your method of construction is perfect. I build all my projects the same way. I do what makes sense to me. Sometimes I screw up but hey it's my project. Great job so far.

Hi Heather, thank you. Keep watching. I’m putting up walls and ceiling with same boards. Looks very rustic and simple. Thor spring going to get shelving and start on some furnishings.

@@LivingOurAmericanDream I like watching your projects. I built a 10x10 cabin with a loft sleeping area for a friend. Hinged ladder to access loft, lifted up out of the way when not in use. I used 2x4 bracing front and back to carry the load. Not near as big as your loft. I went overkill because it was for someone else.

Not just an 'American Dream' - I'm watching them all from the UK and really enjoying a seeing build by an 'average fella' like me. It makes it seem achievable for me as I plan to do something similar on some land I own in Ireland. Great vids. Thanks for posting them!

Those old school Coleman fuel lanterns rock. Used em 25 years ago when I'd take my kids camping. And don't let the critical critics get under your skin on your build. These KZbin commentators could find fault in a building that Frank Llyod Wright designed and Norm Abrams built ...

My floor joist are nailed to the studs on the old portion of my Home. Home is balloon construction and and those 4 nails per per joist have been holding fine for over 100 years. Disadvantage is that if you put plywood across the bottom of the loft, you will hear mice running since there is no blocking to slow them down. I always know to set the traps when I hear mice in the ceiling at night

I agree re: the window and door headers. A building this small.. it not necessary. As for the loft, I'd be slightly worried, but if you're ok with it, then its your business. If it were me, I'd put a ledger board under the joists with some of the structural lag screws.. or maybe put a jack stud under each one? But like I said.. if you're comfortable with it.. then its your biz!

Great job of insulating your exterior walls. I did not see any of those plastic ceiling pieces you install on the ceiling used to vent air over the ceiling insulation you will be installing next video.
@KLUJICS Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your windows. It’s not big enough and a cabin in the woods will not be subject to any codes. People are too opinionated. 😂
@003fulle2 жыл бұрын
Your loft isn’t going to fall. It’s just gonna be bouncy. You can eliminate that by laminating some 1/2” plywood to the joist.
@mwa1252 Жыл бұрын
Excellant videos... I picked up alot of good tips! I have a couple of questions though... 1) I noticed that you don't seem to have a ridge "beam" which would normally be the cast for a cathedral ceiling since there are no rafter ties. Do you think this could be an issue? 2) Also, I didn't see any kind of ventilation so I was wondering what you did to prevent condensation moisture inside the roof sheathing?
@LivingOurAmericanDream Жыл бұрын
There is a ridge beam, it’s a rough sawn 2x8 along the top. The rafter ties are actually my loft supports. It’s not traditional building method but it’s very solid. If I did it again I would out the rafters 16” apart instead of 24” but that’s not because I’ve had any issues.
@mwa1252 Жыл бұрын
@@LivingOurAmericanDream Yes, I see now. The "rafter" ties are not actually on the rafters at all but instead are spanning the walls tying them together. I think this is a great idea for a small cabin. The ridge "beam" though, doesn't appear to be a beam at all, since It has no column supporting it. But, as you pointed out, you do have the seven "non-traditional" rafter/wall ties which should eliminate the need for a ridge beam. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your project with us. I got some great ideas from this play list!
