I'm glad you guys are self-aware of the loss of that "sense of wonder" that normal enthusiasts have around cars. No one gets to drive all the best cars like you guys do, so there really is a mystique around a lot of fun cars, especially ones that aren't just seen driving around. I'm a college student who loves Audi, so I drive an A4. I am so attracted to things like the RS5 and R8 because I genuinely can't imagine the driving experience. I think that's something a lot of youtubers/journalists lose sight of. Seeing reviewers sit with a straight face and act bored in 300+ HP cars is so disheartening, because it shows how different their perspective really is from the average enthusiast.

Sure there are other nicer cars that I would love to have, but I think it’s very similar to what James said about diminishing returns, and working yourself to death to get the “next/newer/nicer” car. The F80 is already a very expensive car to me (especially in this current climate where everything has went up in price). I think I’m at the top of what I think is reasonable for myself- especially considering I’m not a good enough driver to even take full advantage of what the M3 can do. If anything, I need to spend money on some track lessons before considering a “faster” car. P.S. - you guys need to do a video on the F80. You’ve done every other M3. However, I have better things to do than watching two guys chat on a couch about awesome cars. Buuuutttt, I'd rather watch guys sit on a couch and talk about awesome cars.😁 Great job, guys. Owned an ND1 MX5 for 4 years then changed to a 2018 Elise. Absolutely loved the MX5 but the Elise really turns it up several notches. Now own a 250 cup, if it’s a second or third car an Elise is a definite joy and upgrade. I have the fortune of using it as a daily driver and it’s definitely made me question my sanity more than a couple of times. Once the weather clears up, and I’m driving on one of the two roads without potholes everything makes sense again

I was thoroughly entertained listening to the discussion for 45 minutes, and it feels like you guys discuss your real enthusiast feelings in a very honest, transparent way that doesn't feel intimidating. Your environment feels very inviting and warm for enthusiasts to sit down and talk about cars and makes me want to have something like that in my life. Also, James put down a deposit on the Lotus Emira, or so he told us in a later video, so feels like he was already contemplating this choice for a while... Organic content. Love you guys (as automotive journalists and vloggers, obviously).

For me my dream car is the car in my garage... My Rapid/lucid Red 2020 Ecoboost Mustang Premuim pony package with all the thing but the B&O system, Memory seats and a digital dispay so like a Dealer made heritege package... Oh and he was the last 2020 Mustang being built on 12/30... It's just so good as is it has an identy unique to it... I could mod it I could when I have money replace ity as my prefered car... But I like the 2020 S550 becuase of the plack and I love the look the only issue I have is the inteor is cheap and the panel don't match up... But overall I always wanted a mustang and now I have one... and coming from games and sims I knew how it would feel and It's great. Thank's for this video guys really made me reflect on what I have.

Guess what... it's a HASSLE, and you don't enjoy it properly - like what Thomas found with his E46. We have 1 car now, and it's amazing (Lyft/Uber are great)! 100% convinced we'll always have 1 or 2 vehicles at a time - no more. Alfaholics is one of my 2 dream vehicles! I 1000% agree with you, the 190E 2.3 Evolution is not only one of the best looking cars ever and is definitely in my top five. I can just imagine modern engine tech on the 2.3 cossworth, 9k rpm, ITB’s, cf body panels, doors, hood, trunk, modern ignition system, newer lighter wheels and especially modern high performance tires. Talk about a car worth restomod. You should restomod your 190E into a 2.3 E, swap in a Honda K24, cam and valve train to hit that sweet 10k rpm, or turbo it. Not sure how strong the factory trans is but there are plenty out there to drop in.

Thank you for the memory to start this off. I owned a 69 Alfa Spider with SPICA and loved it. Traded it in when I was in the Navy for something with more room to carry stuff when going from duty station to duty station. I have yet to live down that mistake. Excellent conversation! I’m currently in a 2020 WRX premium and heavily contemplating what my next jump up will be. M2 has been on the radar for a long time, but this new lotus makes me feel funny in the pants lol. Unfortunately driving them both and then deciding will likely not happen.
@k.w58042 жыл бұрын
Lotus would likely cost the same as a properly loaded cayman GTS 4.0 or a GT4. It’s just like buying a corvette in the UK but in reverse. I was shopping between the new g80 m3 xdrive, lotus evora, and cayman gts 4.0. In the end the Porsche made a lot more sense to me purely from a price perspective and went with it (still waiting for my allocation).

@@k.w5804 So I am here in Tennessee, Corvettes and Porsche‘s are literally everywhere. But Lotus are very rare. It just checks all of the boxes for me.
@k.w58042 жыл бұрын
@@ColtCapperrune Yeah in North America lotus is definitely rarer no matter where you are. You should be able to test drive one at least the evora. 11/10 fun car but imo not something you want to daily.

As a French guy, may I suggest an intermediate price alternative between the Miata and Elise, which would be the Alpine A110 or its GT version for a little more comfort ? It’s light and playful as well. Doesn’t come as a convertible though. And I guess those are quite difficult to find in Canada and the US too 😅 And there’s probably a cost to import them too… Oh well. It was just an idea :)
@samuelfanning65982 жыл бұрын
Suggestion for next video, try to make a video about the best performance car to own for under CAD 22k, the best daily for under 22k, and then the best do-everything car for less than 22k. Because that`s really the budget of the average Canadian.

On the note of base cars. The upper trim levels of the Corolla isn't much more and does give you a significantly better infotainment setup.
@Bacciagalupe2 жыл бұрын
James - I owned an NA Miata for six years with moderate mods (full suspension, and a few other things, three pedals of course). I agree - one of my absolute favorite things about the car was how PLAYFUL it was. That's possibly my most desired characteristic in a performance car. I see where you're going with a mid engine Lotus or Porsche being the only "upgrade" path. I think if there is an upgrade path, you're spot on. But, I'll make an argument that, if playfulness is most important, there is no upgrade path from a Miata - not that I enjoy saying that It all has to do with the layout of the platform itself. In my experience, mid engine cars are more IMPRESSIVE but absolutely less PLAYFUL. Everyone mentions the "perfect weight distribution" of a mid engine car - uhh, no. Almost all mid engine cars have 60% of their weight over the rear wheels - including the Ariel Atom, which is amazing, but also infamously tricky to drive. The Boxster/Cayman are some of the most balanced of all, with "only" 55% over the rear. A Miata wants to be steered with the throttle. I've found that the increase in mechanical grip from a mid (or rear) engine rear weight bias (PLUS the fat rear tires) decreases the car's willingness to move around and get lively... at least without doing anything stupid and endangering innocent people. Bottom line: Most playful sports car on sale for any amount of money = Miata. Only possible substitute = Caterham
