Catalina 27 was my first sailboat. Perfect for single handler and great handicap for racing. Second was a Catalina 30 also great for two people to sail. Did the Canal system from Lake Ontario and inter coastal to South Carolina. Now have a Catalina 42. Love it and now 21st year sailing it but only Lake Ontario and 1000 islands but visited every marina on both US and Canadian Sides. Home base Port Whitby Ontario.

I’m still alive. The school I was all set to go to sold all their boats so it never happened. A guy I met promised to take me out sort of like an Intro to Sailing but he was talking just to hear himself talk. How I want to do this. I’ll find a way.

I am getting ready for my second sailing season with c-27 ('85). i made one overnight trip last year with my wife. We sailed from Norfolk VA to Cape Charlestown on the eastern shore. stayed at the marina there. Had dinner and sailed home the next day. We had a very nice trip. I am looking forward to doing a few of those this summer maybe to yorktown and locations further up the bay from little creek which is at the bottom of the bay.

JUST A WONDERFUL BOAT! We raced it and had the most amazing moments in it. Wonderful memories that I will never forget. Her name is Corvus and though we sold her we still love her...

My father had a Catalina 27 and I fell in love with sailing on that boat. He sold it before he died. How I wish I could find that boat and buy her back now.

I like the single winch cabin roof arrangement. What is it for ? Do you use cockpit winches for the spinnaker sheets as well ?

I use that winch to raise the mainsail and to control the mainsheet. Alas, I don't have a spinnaker.

Would you say this sailboat is sufficient for a family of 4, two adults and two teenage boys? Looking to go back and forth to Catalina in the summer. Maybe the Channel Islands on vacation. Need something big enough but not too big.

Four people sailing aboard? Fine. Four people sleeping aboard? Crowded. That said, this is a great starter boat for coastal cruising. Easily handled. Forgiving. But lively.

Bruce Williams i think it comes down to how you will manage provisioning. My San Juan 21 easily sleeps 4 but more than 2 is crowded for overnight because of all the stuff. I think 24 is minimum for you and 27 should be fine. Look into a fancy deck mounted grill to ease up the salon crowd.
