You undoubtly are a fine doctor, but a lousy mechanic :) :) At least you got the ring off, but I couldn't even start a surgery :) :) About the GEM cutter : allow the machine to rev up at max rpm, only then start cutting without pushing down the blade, allow to rev all the time. Use a little water running down the place to cool easily.

I'm a jeweler and have removed more rings than I can count. One trick that I've found is, once you've cut through the ring and opened it up some, is to gently pull the skin back through the ring as you work the ring off the finger. This helps reduce the amount of swollen tissue that bunches up around the knuckle. I've also had the person soak his/her hand in ice water to help reduce the swelling before trying to work the ring off.

I love all your videos but I must say this video defines why I think what you are doing with these videos is awesome. You show ALL of what goes into emergency medicine. So much of what we do is tedious and likely viewed by some as "not important" in the grand scheme of things. These are the things that most in the field can learn from but will rarely see presented in this format. Thanks again!

Sorry doc, But I've got a side grinder with a diamond blade- that will easily cut through stone , granite, metal , etc... And I could cut through that ring in about 2 mins- taking my time the last little bit as not to cut his hand. Could have used cool water if needed to reduce heat transfer from the friction. Perhaps they should have called in one of the experts from the maintenance dept.

The ring is made of siladium. It's extremely difficult to cut and cannot be resized. I'm a Professional Bowler and have many rings. Some are Gold but most are Siladium. That is how I know.
@VaIhalIa Жыл бұрын
In 2014, I underwent the extraction of a siladium ring "college football." The removal process remained largely unchanged, albeit with the implementation of a powerful stretching instrument that used hydraulic power, however, I'm only guessing because of the two tubes filled with a liquid. After two small cuts on the ring, the aforementioned device effortlessly expanded the ring within seconds and it slid right off. During a transmission swap, my finger was crushed, leading to severe swelling, excruciating pain, and a nearly blackened appearance, eventually necessitating my hospitalization. An x-ray revealed that the crushing incident had resulted in the fracture of my finger at two discrete locations. To alleviate the distress associated with the ring’s extraction and severe pre-existing pain, the doctor administered a dosage of dilaudid. The imprudence of initially electing to “sleep off” the discomfort for six hours prior to seeking medical attention made it far worse. The potency of the dilaudid I was given for pain extended my stay at the hospital until its effects receded, given that its analgesic attributes induced a state of significant intoxication. I had no clue it can't be repaired, a shame because I was thinking of having it fixed someday for my grandchild. 😞 Thanks for the information and have a great day.

Larry Mellick : Another time if you get the same problem you can try my suggestion. You don't have to cut the ring, you just need to smear his finger with soap suds and then pull while twisting the ring out. If necessary, soak his finger into the water 10 minutes before you pull the ring out to make sure his finger skin softer.

I had the same accident. Went to sleep and boom the next day my finger had swollen and i couldn't get it off. I tried using soap and water with no luck so i went to the doctor in a hurry and he tried this method they did on this video in the beginning and that didn't work. The doctors told me to go to the hospital really quick as my finger started turning blue. I came to the hospital and was taken in to the emergency room right away. There were 4 doctors there who tried with no luck and my finger turned more and more blue. They told me to go wait in the waiting room and 10min later i saw 7 firemen walking in and pointing at me to follow them while they carried a tool box 😅 They had a saw machine and cut my ring in half. My finger was stone hard and dark blue but after a while it went back to a natural colour and softened up. Thank you for reading :)

I could not find my original comment to reply back to you, but dremel tools are rotary tools that can be purchased at any home depot. From my experience either a cut off wheel will zip right through metal, or for safety of your patients, maybe a diamond carbide burr would work very well. That finger guard would work perfect with a dremel tool, or maybe a popsicle stick or tongue depressor would suffice for a single use.

Lol you'd think they would have a stronger grinder that thing isn't powerful at all
@kevinchen8309 жыл бұрын
You're right, the grinder isn't really strong, but the thing is, to be able to use it in that kind of situation, it has to be compact in size and thus limiting its power tremendously. The bit itself is also a factor. If you had something such as a dremel, you might think it is more powerful, but you are failing to see that because they need to ensure that the bit does not break and further injure the patient, they are cutting a pretty thick grove into the ring while a dremel can use a diamond seeded thin bit that can cut through metal like this is just a couple of minutes.
@austinepp52376 жыл бұрын
you can get a micro die-grinder that is way more powerful then that and runs on a battery. as well as being about a third the size

Install the metal sliver between the ring and skin then produce the slot in the narrow part of the ring. Take a pair of diagonals or end cutters and place the tips of either tool and squeeze the handles together. This will expand the slot providing the extra diameter. If the ring is gold or silver the ring can be cut as it is softer material. After the ring is cut use both tools to pull the ring apart. This has worked very well for me in the Past. Joe Carter

I had my wedding ring stuck and did the string trick. I used dental floss, along with dish soap to help. Got to the knuckle, had to start wrapping the finger again and continue. Finally came off!
@nicoleimmerheiser64298 жыл бұрын
string trick would have probably worked with dental floss or a cotton twine, the kind that is used to wrap a box of pastry, ER needs to buy a supply on a spool for that purpose. I had this done with my wedding ring, pregnant went to bed and woke up with sausage fingers. Nurses were saying they should have done a finger stick when it was wrapped, would have shot out at least 15 feet. they took a hemostat and wrapped the loose end several times around it, pulled holding it tip and finger holes like a handle. I swore my skin was coming off like peeling a banana, but it worked. They offered to cut it but I didn't need to have it sized because after pregnancy my finger would go back to normal, so in the name of $$$ I bite down.

Just thought I'd let you know the easy way to get this hard ones off is to split it just like you did, but turn is 90 degrees and clamp the one side in a small vise, then using a large flat blade screw driver with a small spacer under it to act as a fulcrum will spread it open will work. (experience)
@pardeepduggal32136 жыл бұрын
last month i too went through the same situation but ten times worse then this one adding to the worse part was it was my wedding gold ring and in the middle finger, large swelling had grown around the ring and it clear cut seemed only cutting the ring will save me from the pain of swelling from the past three days and after about 30 to 40 minutes of trying level best to remove by using hair oils etc but the swelling on both ends of the ring resisted every effort then we again finally decided to get the wedding ring cut so i went into kitchen and applied hand wash soap to remove the oil from hand and then it felt a bit easy for me to try further on my own with the help of soap slipperiness it came out.

Might be a good idea to elevate the hand above the head as to drain the blood within the finger itself that is causing the swelling due to the Restriction of the appendage. Thus causing the swelling to go down a little bit and making it easier to slip the ring off.😬👍

Pitcher through a curve ball with that ring. Weight lifters are a medical device? I learn every day. Rats. Thanks to all for the efforts on this one. Page 2.

YOU give birth to ONE BAD CHAMPIONSHIP RING ...I KNOW THAT WAS SO SO PAINFUL !

The ring cutter needs a little more power- I know that the faster it goes, the more friction and heat it would produce- but those are controllable. A good powered rotary tool would chop right through that-

That happened to me once in 🇲🇽Mexico.It hurt 😢 when I put it on.In the malteadas I went to the bathroom and forced it on. Grandma‘s friend came and tried to pull it of and it felt numb.But I was still happy she got it of

Maybe the lubricant helps to reduce the friction between the sides of the blade and the sides of the cut groove, thus allowing a better rotation speed? I'm no engineer though.

I think using the flexible cable was the main issue because it didn't keep the finger pressed down enough to pull the ring over it, had they used a more rigid piece of string I think they would have been better off.
